Liz Truss has told King Charles not to go to the COP27 meeting next month

This is what I have just heard said on the BBC 9am news. And yes, they used the word 'told'.

It isn't on their website. It's considerably toned down on the Guardian website. The mirror is even stronger - 'Liz Truss orders King Charles not to attend COP27 climate summit."

What the hell is going on here?

Charles is sound. Truss is disgusting... nuf said

They all put it differently: King Charles will not attend Cop27 as Liz Truss denies making order

As a constitutional monarch he has to accept the advice of the PM - but she could celebrate his known commitment to the environment and encourage him to go! Thank you to the earlier poster who gave a link to an article about Liz Truss' belief system and copied this sentence:
Our destiny, according to this belief system, is to turn nature into money.
If this is what our Prime Minister believes - we have to despair or speak up - email our MPs at the very least. Charles is now unable to speak up as he used to - but we can.

I'm going to shout again, apologies in advance.

THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD AND THE ENVIRONMENT IS NOT POLITICAL.

Absolutely Volver! How dare Truss dictate to him!

The King has already said that he will no longer be able to get as involved with matters close to his heart as he used to, as king he’s not allowed to express opinions. Personally I hope he does continue with his environmental work and I’d like him to go to COP27. I feel it’s important for us to be represented by somebody who genuinely cares.

Grantanow Mon 03-Oct-22 12:52:56

Charles will always act on the 'advice' of his Ministers because he is a constitutional monarch. He may have things to say to Truss in private audience but that is as far as it goes.

volver Mon 03-Oct-22 12:56:29

Shall I do my shouty bit again?

What if there is a national disaster and many people die? Does he have to ask Lizzie before he comments?

What if there is a fire at St Pauls, and it burns to the ground. Does he have to ask her if he can go to see the wreckage and speak to the firefighters??

So a person with 70+ years of experience has to ask an arriviste politician what she advises? We so need to get this sorted out...

mokryna Mon 03-Oct-22 13:09:14

Could the Prince of Wales take up the baton or he is under Truss’ orders also?

Alie2Oxon Mon 03-Oct-22 13:09:38

Applegran, thanks for reading the article.

The point here is that Truss has influenced the King - reports differ and media do hype things up.... but her influence has stopped him, as of now, from going to COP27.

This was not his intention, but is exactly what she wants - she is not thinking of the rest of the world, but only of increasing her own power here. She's dangerous.

He doesn’t look too thrilled

Can a King have a PM’s bottom smacked ?
That’s what she deserves, so disrespectful, and to be ‘advised’ not to go to something SO close to his heart for such a long time! Disgraceful!

Zoejory Mon 03-Oct-22 13:15:31

If Charles had wanted to go, he would have gone. He's already stated that he wonky be able to be as vocal about certain things now he's King.

Truss, who finds it tricky to speak a simple sentence, would not have told him not to go.

Why people believe that he's been having a natter with her and she's forbidden him to attend I'll never know.

Katie59 Mon 03-Oct-22 13:16:01

The monarch has his advisors that look at ALL his engagements and invitations and the risk of any controversy or embarrassment is taken into account.

I totally agree!

Charles may have asked her advice, doesn't mean he has to take it! He is our King FGS, if he can't go where he wants, hold personal opinions on things and voice them if he wishes, then who can. Even as King he is a citizen of this country which claims to uphold freedom of speech, and that should include him.

GO Charles!

We need to get Truss (and her party) out of office ASAP, she's dangerous.

I don't usually comment on political matters, too complicated for my ageing brain, but I was incensed at reading this and just had to put in my two-pennyworth. That's all I'm saying, not going to get into a long discussion about it.

Alie2Oxon Mon 03-Oct-22 13:19:49

The controversy is in Truss's head!

Last year, no controversy about the Queen...

katy1950 Mon 03-Oct-22 13:35:31

I'm sure that wasn't the case you can believe anything you read in the medua

Anothe COP international conference, in Egypt this time. Hardly had time to get over the last one. Wonder what updates on progress will be given and how many trees will need to be olanted to offset the pollution from all the travel. Have those involved not heard of using video conferencing etc.

volver Mon 03-Oct-22 14:07:51

They happen every year. That's why they have numbers.

I am going to guess you have never attended a large international conference with worldwide importance or you wouldn't be suggesting videoconferencing.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 03-Oct-22 14:12:13

The long and the short of it is that a constitutional monarch should not express political views, especially not if they can be considered to favour party politics.

I would have thought that King Charles or any other royal person could attend COP 27 as long as he did not speak at the meeting or comment upon speeches made there.

As it is apparently being held in Egypt, there are other matters of protocol to take into consideration than whether the King's attendence could be construed as expressing a political opinion. Usually, the visit of a head of state to another country comes about after lengthy diplomatic discussions and I am not clear as to whether a king, has like the rest of us, to wait until he is invited, or whether he can still express the desire to visit a country and then automatically receive an invitation.

I do know that private citizens do not as a matter of etiquette invite royalty. Royalty signify that they would like to visit one, whereupon if any of you should ever receive such a notification, (I certainly don't expect to) you reply that you are greatly honoured and the occasion suggested suits you fine (whether it does or not.)

If indeed Liz Truss was so lacking in manners as to TELL the king anything, I hope he, or a palace official told her nicely that the Prime Minister may ADVISE the sovereign, but not TELL him what he may or may not do.

volver Mon 03-Oct-22 14:18:13

It's obvious sometimes why we are not making the required progress on countering climate change.

While we think its relevant to ask who was invited, and whether it was protocol to invite them at all, and whether royals should open their mouths; the planet burns.

Somewhere along the way we've got our priorities very confused.

Gabrielle56 Mon 03-Oct-22 14:21:14

Did she though? I can't stand her but press do tell downright lies! He's probably been 'advised' to tone it down now that he's the actual King?

Katie59 Mon 03-Oct-22 14:23:44

The Queen sent an address to the Glasgow COP because she was the host head of state, it’s highly likely that speech was written for her as the the opening of parliament.

As head of state the monarch must convey the view of the government of the day, wether privately they agree or not.

volver Mon 03-Oct-22 14:28:02

And do you think the view of the government of the day is that there is no climate change, and we don't need to do anything about it?

Actually, anything's possible with this lot.....

philoheart Mon 03-Oct-22 14:37:48

Liz Truss does not have the authority within the constitution to order the King, she may only advise.

GreenGran78 Mon 03-Oct-22 15:00:27

O the picture Charles looks as if he'd like to give her a punch on the nose! ???

Exactamondo raymondo!! It just makes me think they're all having another " jolly" where they just happen to have a few speakers banging on about how the planet's changing and we need to get a grip , after which they all beggar off for a booze up before jetting off home again.........
