Casdon

Casdon I'm not disputing that he identifies as Welsh - just being a pedant after seeing (from wiki admittedly) that he's not Welsh-born. I'm more concerned that his politics seem pretty ghastly.

You don’t have to be born in Wales to be Welsh though, with Welsh parents who were in England when you were born but returned to Wales for your upbringing you qualify. If not, my SIL isn’t Welsh either!
His politics are horrible, I totally agree - very right wing. As I said, he won’t get on with our First Minister I’m sure.

But I was nitpicking the use of Welsh-*born*.

Incidentally, my ex MIL has lived most of her life in Cardiff and was born in Wales. Nevertheless, she identifies as English and was always going on about how ridiculous it was that she had a vote in whether Wales should be devolved.

Not so, there are changes.
In any case, the two who really matter have only just come into the jobs, the PM and the Chancellor. It is quite a relief.

A relief from what? hmm

Boris Johnson as PM and recently Liz Truss as PM.

A rotten apple, a rotten banana and a rotten pear are all different, but they're all rotten and horrible.

And the new’ish (upcycled?) Deputy leader Raab co wrote Britannia Unchained with Truss and Kwarteng so he obviously agreed with their mini budget.

Your fruit may be rotten growstuff but I don’t believe that either Rishi Sunak or Jeremy Hunt are.
I do not go in for labelling all politicians of the political party that I do not follow as bad, that would be childish.
They are only just in their new positions and need some time.
Whoever was in government just now would have a testing period, the situation is dire in many countries and hard for all governments. At least it was right to tell the truth to the British people about economic hardships to come.
Now we wait to see what will be announced later this month.

If you have a shit pack of cards, however much you shuffle them you’ll end up with a shit hand. I did have some fleeting hope that Sunak would be a new broom, but it’s the same old, same old. Suella Braverman appointment shows a complete disregard for integrity. Time for a new pack.

but I do think that everyone should be treated with respect and empathy
Have you met an Albanian drug dealer. Have you lived next door to one. Do you know anyone who was forced to close their business because they upset a gang member.

There are a a lot of good Albanians in our area, unfortunately there is a larger criminal community of Albanians.

Wasn’t there a spate of violence in and around the City High Street over the summer?

Not everybody lives in the Albanian gangsterland of South Essex!

I do not live in Albanian gangsterland (what a silly thing to post)

I do read the local newspaper of the seaside city..

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Oct-22 07:31:45

Oh well, a government of competence, compassion and integrity, disappeared with the cabinet.

I was actually a bit hopeful after Sunak’s speech. It lasted for about 3 hours.

We are already hearing about the deals he’s done with people like Braverman - sacked for breaching the ministerial code.

Still I suppose the pond is so small now, the same fish will have to do.

We soooo need an election.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Oct-22 07:36:21

Just reading that Braverman would have received 3 months severance pay for getting sacked.

She then picked up the same job less than a week later!

Tories good at spending our money aren’t they?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Oct-22 07:47:57

Raab the man with no brain,

Braverman the racist, fascist hardliner and security risk known to be a serial leaker of government documents.

Do you have some sort of memory that erases the past each night so that you wake up each morning with a 'clean slate, Prentice?

They are only just in their new positions and need some time.

Apart from Sunak himself all those in key positions have served before as Ministers and should be experienced enough to run from the start. Some of them are either unchanged or are reprising former posts. Do you not remember them? And few of them exactly shone the first time round.

Hunt is a particular worry. He managed to practically destroy the NHS when he was Health Minister, now he's about to destroy the UK with a completely unnecessary round of deep cuts to public services.

We can only hope that this new administration falls apart very fast and that we at last get the general election that most sane people are calling for.

Daisymae Wed 26-Oct-22 08:22:00

Make no mistake this is a right wing government. They would like nothing more than to parcel out the NHS to interested parties. Braverman wants to ban immigration yet many sectors are on their knees because of staff shortages. We're on our 5th education secretary this year. All this and more with international crises and home grown Tory financial straights. Not to mention cost of living and industrial unrest. I'd be surprised if Sunak can keep the wheels on the bus for any prolonged period. To quote Truss 'at least I was PM'.

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 08:40:50

I generally do not deal with contentious posters, but will just say simply that the new PM and the new Chancellor need time to settle into their new jobs. They have had ministerial posts before, but not these ones. Rishi Sunak dealt very well with the pandemic and furlough.

volver Wed 26-Oct-22 08:43:52

"Here you go Hunt, you were s*** at Health and cr** at the foreign office. Have a go at fixing the worst economic mess we've seen in decades."

What could possibly go wrong?

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 08:45:24

If anyone is of the opinion, that because any Minister is a Conservative one, then ipso fact they must be no good at all, then that is that, just their opinion.
I can see that in a future Labour government, which I hope will come next time, there will also be some useless Ministers.

CatsCatsCats Wed 26-Oct-22 08:46:44

I think everybody should stop moaning and see what the next few weeks brings.

Look on the bright side - lots of you detested Jacob Rees-Mogg and now he's gone.

Even the Guardian is relieved about Rishi Sunak
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/oct/25/rishi-sunak-prime-minister-system

volver Wed 26-Oct-22 08:51:32

Have you actually read that Guardian article Catscatscats?

I'm going to guess the answer is "no".

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Oct-22 08:59:22

DS says that Truss was considered one of the worst Environment Ministers ever.

I reckon her bestie Coffey will give her a run for her money.

Franbern Wed 26-Oct-22 09:09:16

I read that Guardian article - far from being impressed with new PM and his cabinet - it is saying exactly the opposite.

We now have a new(ish) cabinet of the extreme right of a right wing party. Telling us (the electorate - who they are totally unwilling to trust in a GE), how they are intending to clear up the mess that they, themselves, made!!!

Time to panic - we are doomed.....doomed!!!!!

volver Wed 26-Oct-22 09:09:23

If anyone is of the opinion, that because any Minister is a Conservative one, then ipso fact they must be no good at all, then that is that, just their opinion.

That's not the case Prentice and thinking that just shows some of the underdeveloped political analysis that some people are burdened with. Most of us think that these ministers are bad because they have had years in the job already and have shown themselves completely useless at it. Those who haven't been at the job for years (looking at you Suella) have manged to get themselves sacked after a few weeks for being a security risk.

Yet they are back.

Sunak had an opportunity to appoint a cabinet that would be good for Britain. But he's blown it, along with any good hopes any of us had for him.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Oct-22 09:23:07

Sunak is 42 and green behind the gills - and showing it. His choice of cabinet members shows his inexperience and political incompetence.

For all the grandiose statements by the Tory party of fresh start, bright future, etc, it will begin to show pretty soon the paucity of competence, integrity and compassion.

The British public are on to them, and will no longer be so easily fooled.

PMs should only been appointed once they have served at least 10 years in office and a level of maturity, fit for high office.

Sunak has neither.

RichmondPark1 Wed 26-Oct-22 09:26:06

I can never understand this 'let them settle in' or 'I'll wait to see what they do' stance.

None of these politicians are fresh from the egg. We know what they stand for. We can research their stance and their history and the friends they have kept. We can all watch the video of Sunak talking about taking funding from poorer areas to give it to more comfortable areas and also him referring to 'lefty lawyers'. As for Suella Braverman, the last month is measure of her.

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

Fleurpepper Wed 26-Oct-22 09:30:59

Re-appointing Bravermann was a huge mistake.

Maya1 Wed 26-Oct-22 09:43:43

No l don't know any Albanians but there is a drug dealer in our street, who is British. The police know of him and have raider his house numerous times.
We Polish neighbours who are lovely and who about three years ago were treated appallingly. Dog poo and racist abuse put through their letter box.
I also know are Latvian/Russian couple through walking our dogs, who again have been the subject of racist abuse.
Surely we should treat people how we want to be treated ourselves and at least give them a chance.

LizzieDrip Wed 26-Oct-22 09:48:52

I think the Braverman situation was set up to start the ball rolling to oust Truss, thereby opening the door for Sunak. Maybe Sunak promised her the home office job back if she went through with it. Here’s the timeline (IMO):

1. She ‘makes the mistake’ for which she (being a person of such high integrity) feels she has to resign.

2. In her resignation letter she is scathing towards Truss. This is the catalyst for the end of Truss.

3. Truss resigns.

4. Sunak becomes PM.

5. Braverman’s ‘mistake’ which, only a few days earlier had been a serious resignation matter, is no longer of any relevance… Braverman back at Home Office as promised.

The End (of us all)!

It’s got the basis of a fab Netflix seriesshock.

Totally agree, I give all folks the benefit of the doubt.

There are good and bad in all sections of society.
