If that is a true response from the organisers that 'babies would not understand what was being performed' it is one if the most inappropriate responses I have ever seen. The fact that babies dont understand what is happening should never be used as a defense.
āļø This.
I've just seen a video of a baby sitting in its high chair watching Pavarotti sing Nessun Dorma on a TV. It gradually ceased all its fidgeting, stared fixedly at the screen, occasionally looking at its parents and smiling, and then going back to the screen, staring open-mouthed.
I'm sure the baby didn't pick up the finer points of the aria, nor have any understanding of tragedy, but it sensed or felt something pleasurable, or interesting.
I don't believe that babies or toddlers are totally immune to what is going on in front of them. They may not understand in the way we do as adults, but this is a crucial period in their development and they soak up their surroundings like sponges.
There may not be anything damaging in watching men dangling upside down in bondage gear, it could even make them laugh, but that's not the point. It's the cynical, dismissive attitude... the comment about f***ing Wheels-on-the-Bus, the self-indulgence... blow the kids, I want my fun. And drinking whilst in charge of children? Maybe in the home environment when there's others around who aren't...
I know I'll be thought of as a prude, but I don't mind. I'm obeying a gut instinct. We have a duty of care towards children.
