If you hold a referendum and agree to be bound by the majority decision, “nearly half” won’t cut it.

How much of nearly half equals Leave in a Leave/Stay referendum?

44.7% is not 45% either, for anyone keen on Mathematics.
The turnout was high at 84.59%

Nearly half isn’t half of anything. It’s always under half or over half however small or large the amount is below or above 50%. The arguments always come from those with the lower amount.

Polls would suggest a drop of those in favour of independence in the intervening 8.5 years.

✂️✂️ It’s this year, just over a month ago. More up to date than some of the polls often used to prove/disprove things posters like or dislike.

More recent than some figures we are quoted, but of course, unacceptable for those wanting a different outcome.
Maybe the fall in popularity could be extrapolated from the discussions surrounding of NS’s resignation and the later publicity relating to the SNP.

I have read pretty much the same article in several papers, under several different bylines, over the past few weeks. The Guardian alone has commissioned it from at least three columnists.

No, it's just that some of us had been chatting about the importance of having an understanding of mathematics on another thread.

Now you have read more of the article and found him say something you do agree with, how about going back to the beginning of the article and reading the whole thing with an open mind - and approach anything else he writes in future with an open mind. He will, no doubt, continue to write things you do not agree, with good reason, but an open mind brings many pleasant surprises.

No, I actually think that Neil gets to the root of questions and knows how to make a point, but he is biased. He presents things in a way that he knows will lead other biased people to agree with him. So him reporting in a paper that is biased against the SNP? What can I say...?

So, for instance the ferries thing is a disaster - what were they thinking? The same as the people in charge of HS2 were thinking, I guess. I don't agree with him that we have a "high tax economy" that will discourage growth. I think we all pay more taxes and that is what sensible societies do. His comment about the NHS? No strikes here yet, I believe, and shorter waiting times that in England. He didn't mention that, did he?

So don't patronise me with suggestions I have should have an open mind. I can recognise his propaganda when I see it.
