Charlotte Owen, Baroness Owen of Alderley Edge
(111 Posts)Youngest life peer sworn in yesterday.
This still amazes me.
And why don't we know anything about her?
Also, does this mean she lives in Alderly Edge or was born there, or her family is from there?
I love Alderly Edge!
Also, know Peers are often (always?) "of" somewhere but how is this decided?
I don’t care who her parents are, I just think she shouldn’t have been given a peerage. In my opinion she’s too young, and I have no idea what she’s done to deserve it. But then again, I’ve no idea what most of them have done to deserve it.
I think there is a lot of wisdom in the House of Lords which is why I’m not totally opposed to getting rid of it. And, in recent years, the HOL’s has been the grown up version of parliament and the voice of sanity. But what this young woman has done to deserve to be in it is beyond me. Doesn’t she get paid for life as well, regardless of whether or not she even turns up?
Miaow Miaow! I did not realise how catty some of you can be. I agree that someone so young does not have experience of life to offer wisdom on important legislation. I just object to you all using conjecture about her parentage. Then the comparison to Rachel Johnson. Rachel is a well respected presenter on LBC and is a journalist. Just leave her alone.
I was advised on my latest thread not to trust anything on Guido Fawkes but the lefty’s here are using Twitter comments to use in this diatribe. Nor were you questioning the young 25 year old who is now an MP. What does he know about real life? He can be defeated in an election but he will still be giving us all the benefit of his wisdom, Some of you are real hypocrites.
I know exactly who Rachel Johnson is, thanks
Rachel Johnson, like her brother, blows with the wind. I thought she was great when she supported the LibDems but I really don’t know where she stands on most things these days. She has her brothers charm but I don’t trust her any more.
I’m sure that poor old Rachel would be extremely upset that I’d posted a photo of her looking gorgeous and comparing her favourably to a woman decades her junior…
Growing up in her family. with her father and her brother and all the terrible things that befell her mother - I’m sure that she can take it (whatever ‘it’ is that I’m guilty of…)
Anniel Having contributed to GN for a while it is my view that posters on this thread come from across the political spectrum, not just the left. With regard to Keir Mather, he was voted into parliament by 16, 456 eligible voters. Charlotte Owen was nominated by one ex P.M. who had already elevated his brother to the HOLs and who had also tried to do the same for his father together with a further rag tag of people who had done nothing to deserve it apart from giving their support to a man who had been found to be a liar. Yes, I'd like to know what Charlotte Owen has done to qualify her for a seat in the Lords, actually I think the British public have a right to know why anyone is chosen to be there because of the authority they hold on our behalf.
Well said foxie

I agree, it is not just posters who are to the left who think this has a whiff of fish about it.
Quite honestly, if (and it is if) the reason is that she is the daughter of Boris Johnson, then would he do this, knowing the attention and curiosity it would attract from all sectors?
Had he not done this then no-one would be wondering about her parentage.
Because no-one outside a few in Government would have heard of her.
Does anyone approve?
My theory is that she kept copies of documents and recordings which are in a safe somewhere.
foxie48 you are absolutely right. It is an absolute mystery why this pretty young woman has received such an extraordinary privilege. (Isn't it?) The HoL is generously financed from public money and the public has a right to know why anyone is elevated to the peerage, thus receiving all sorts of benefits whether or not they do anything much at all. A lot of the life peers are clapped-out politicians, and I do admit that some are doing valuable work scrutinising measures which the government wishes to enact.
We are told why someone has been awarded a medal, very often well deserved. Why is it not made clear for peers? Once they're in, enjoying membership of a lovely club, nothing other than conviction of a crime requiring a custodial sentence can remove them (but they would still be called Lord or Lady).
There are about three times the number of peers we need. The sooner this bloated, unelected body is removed, the better.
Disgusting and proves the utter contempt we are currently held in. I have no objections on age grounds and mixed although admittedly mostly negative thoughts on the current second chamber system, but this peerage stinks! Can’t wait till next year when we voters get our say and this lot get their comeuppance.
I think it is an absolute disgrace that we have something we know nothing about contributing our laws just cos some washed out old lothario of a PM said so, we should be able to know why she justifies it. I'm no Tory or admirer of Narine Dorries, but I'd rather see her in the HoL cos at least she's done something and been elected... well, she used to do something but she hasn't been seen in Parliament for a year or so cos she has a programme on some 'news' channel but she's still drawing her MP's salary and so are her daughters as her assistants. And they call benefits users scroungers
Perhaps there should be a minimum age for Lords - what do you think? - 50, 60, 70?
If we're going to have Lords why should they not need to have demonstrated their wisdom, experience and worthiness, which no young person can have done by 30, certainly not this wee girl.
No more than a 25 year old person elected to Parliament can have shown their wisdom, experience, and worthiness by going to school, followed by university, followed by working for a political party. So no experience of normal life at all. He was at least elected by the people of his constituency, and therefore can be voted out of office, but still, it seems to me that there is little of real value in terms of life experience there at all.
The worst of it is though, that this young woman cannot be removed and can carry on attending the HofL and collect all its benefits both status and financial, for the rest of her life. Which could be a further 60/65 years!
We will never be rid of the Johnson legacy. Worst PM that I can remember. And he thought himself the reincarnation of Churchill 😡
The truth will out.
Yes, MayBee it does look like her.
This is the photo I posted yesterday of Charlotte in the centre
There are photos on twitter of her alongside a photo of Johnson’s mother at the same age - uncanny likeness. And they’re both called Charlotte……
..and his first wife’s surname was Owen……

I’m just seeing if I can post photos again, just ignore me
Well, those aren’t the photos I wanted
