Charles & Camilla in Paris

They arrived in windy conditions in Paris today and Camilla looked great, although she had a "Marilyn Monroe moment" on the steps coming down from the plane. I thought the late Queen always had her hems weighted to prevent that.

But Charles - how baggy and scruffy his suit looked next to Macron. Charles is a slim man, like Macron, yet his suit did him no favours whereas Macron looked very smart.

They have got a full programme while they are in Paris. Sounded exhausting.

Sorry to nitpick Casdon I don’t mean to irritate you but surely everything we CAN do to mitigate carbon emissions helps. That means all of us, where we CAN. Charles really didn’t need his Bentley at his disposal for 3 days - an add on as it were to his travel arrangements. And I don’t think getting the limousine to pick him up at Orly will have cost cheap as chips either - but the cost isn’t the point - they can well afford whatever it is. But my point stands. It’s about the planet and he’s setting a very poor example. They like to bang on about ‘green credentials’ but it’s all about the optics!

We’ll have to agree to disagree on the car I think Urmstongran, because thousands of Brits every day take their cars to Europe by ferry, and I just don’t see the issue with the royals doing the same as everybody else does. I’d hazard a guess it would have cost less than £1000 to pay for the ferry and the petrol, it’s peanuts in the scheme of things. I do object to the private jet, I think that is unnecessary when there are plenty of scheduled flights to Paris, but the car, no.

I was surprised at the king’s suit too. He made me think of Boris though obviously not as bad. My DH £60 suit would have also shown up the king’s!

Agree

King faces criticism after he forces FOUR ministers to fly 400 miles to his private Scottish mansion for a taxpayer-funded meeting... about carbon emissions! trib.al/NFkeb6z

Charles is a grade-A hypocrite on the environment. The super-rich like him are the biggest polluters, and yet they tend to point the finger at the rest of us when it comes to reducing carbon footprints. Charles and William play at environmentalism while being part of the problem.

eazybee Thu 21-Sept-23 18:11:46

So it isn't just Narry and Meghan who have it bad.

Mamie Thu 21-Sept-23 18:14:41

At least the Bentley runs on biofuel.
Et avec un roi porté sur des questions environnementales, la limousine fonctionne forcément aux biocarburants.

IMO if Charles started trying to look like a fashion icon, many people would be taking the right Royal piss out of him. He’s one of Nature’s fogeys and IMO none the worse for that.

I can’t help remembering comments from sundry vacuous female journalists about Henman at the height of his tennis fame - why didn’t he e.g. grow one of those scruffy little beards, try to look more ‘edgy’?
Because it just wasn’t him, that’s why.

mokryna Thu 21-Sept-23 18:29:09

Charles & Camilla could of sat in the car while is came through on the shuttle, like many others do.
I am sure there are bullet proof cars in France that could be found for them. However. when Charles and Emmanuel were traveling down the Champs Élysée they were standing waving to the people, head and shoulders above the roof.

PS We have been told 8000 police were used for security.

I wouldn’t call Camilla’s style ‘delightful’. I’m not sure she even has a style. Mme Macron looked chic, as always, in simple tailoring, and her posture is infinitely better than Camilla’s.

Perhaps Madame Macron has not got osteoporosis. Isn't she lucky she can stand up straight.

I've had osteoporosis, so did my mum. It doesn't prevent you from standing up straight until the very last. My mother had at least 4 crumbling vertebrae. Her spine was bumpy. But she always stood straight well nto her 90s. I'm trying to do the same. You need to exercise and consciously stand up tall.

Madame Macron was very elegantly dressed, but her face and hair look rather ‘ageing Barbie doll’ to me. It really is a mistake to try to look young when you aren’t.

Agree.

And re Camilla or Madame Macron.

I suppose a Queen trumps a President’s wife, whatever they wear or how they carry themselves.

Why go with trends if you're happy to be as you are!

Henman with a scruffy little beard? Heaven forbid 😲

A queen doesn’t trump a presidents wife if you are in the land of Marie Antoinette.

Allsorts Fri 22-Sept-23 07:43:29

Madame Macron has had work done, Camilla hasn’t. I do not agree they looked scruffy, They both came over as very friendly and open, surely that’s what matters. The French people thought so.I never wanted Camilla as Queen, as think Diana was used. However, Charles and Camilla just compliment each other and have a very relaxed, friendly style which people warm to.

But given half a chance they'd swap for one any day. My French friends are obsessed with our royals!

luluaugust Fri 22-Sept-23 08:00:37

I would love to wear M Macron’s outfits but I just know at 76 I would look better in the Queens forgiving coat and dresses. Having osteoporosis myself I can understand why she isn’t always standing up straight

ronib Fri 22-Sept-23 08:07:48

I would love to have some of M. Macron’s hair!

Lollin Fri 22-Sept-23 08:11:15

Does Camilla have osteoporosis?

Joseann Fri 22-Sept-23 08:15:53

Apparently Charles and Camilla were due to arrive in Bordeaux by train today, but that arrangement has been switched to flying in. I can't find anything about the car yet. Atound 13.00 French time.

Lovetopaint037 Fri 22-Sept-23 08:15:56

I couldn’t help wondering if Mme Macron was wearing a wig.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 22-Sept-23 08:32:27

It’s never been said that Camilla has osteoporosis. She has spoken of how her mother suffered from it and as she is the patron of an osteoporosis society I would have thought that she would have spoken out if she too suffered from it.

^I think people in Spain and Italy are much better dressed.^

The Italians - even just ordinary people in the street - look as if they've stepped out of a fashion shoot. Fabulous.

Re Italian style, for some years a dd had an Italian boyfriend who told me that in the Italian workplace you are judged first and foremost on dress, rather than how well you do your job. He said they would size up the brand and cost of everything - ‘even your belt’ - they all had to be expensive ‘designer’.

I said he must surely be exaggerating, but he insisted that he wasn’t.
Some time later I met a young Italian chap - a highly qualified professional - who worked with dh in the U.K. I related this to him, and asked whether it was true.
He said yes, absolutely.
I don’t see anything very admirable in that.

She coud have had it and been treated and cured. I had it in my 50s. Thanks to drugs, supplements and exercise my bone density is now normal to good for my age.
I did wonder if she stoops trying not to tower over Charles

I know a great many French people including my own DS, DiL and 2 GC and all the in laws , none of them would like a royal family in France. There may be some who are “obsessed with royals” on a Hello magazine level ( a bit like on here) but I don’t see any groundswell of demand for reinstating the House of Bourbon or who ever.

That's a pity vegansrock we could have shared the House of Windsor with them (In fact they could keep them if they wanted!)
