Charles & Camilla in Paris

They arrived in windy conditions in Paris today and Camilla looked great, although she had a "Marilyn Monroe moment" on the steps coming down from the plane. I thought the late Queen always had her hems weighted to prevent that.

But Charles - how baggy and scruffy his suit looked next to Macron. Charles is a slim man, like Macron, yet his suit did him no favours whereas Macron looked very smart.

They have got a full programme while they are in Paris. Sounded exhausting.

I’m not a royalist, I think they are increasingly irrelevant in this day and age, but I’m not here to argue about that. I just came for the frocks. I thought both ladies looked good in their different ways. The Queen’s pink outfit was eminently suited to a 76 year old lady and I thought the Dior gown she wore to the reception was lovely. I’m a sucker for the sweep of a cloak though I’d probably trip over it! Mme Macron is the picture of Parisian chic in my opinion, I’m short and plump but would love to be tall and slender.

I know a great many French people including my own DS, DiL and 2 GC and all the in laws , none of them would like a royal family in France. There may be some who are “obsessed with royals” on a Hello magazine level ( a bit like on here) but I don’t see any groundswell of demand for reinstating the House of Bourbon or who ever.

How funny.
I know a great many people in France who love to read or watch about our Royal family. I’ve never asked if they wanted one. Why would I?
They’re more often complaining about their own government, including M.Macron, than saying they don’t want something they haven’t been offered.

All pretty boring.

Ha ha!
But my French friends here (et moi) are equally obsessed about wine, cheese, Art, sailing etc. so it all makes for good conversation, with a bit of history thrown in!

What a laugh isn’t it King and Queen. 😝

Charles the environmentalist decided to fly privately from London to Paris and take his Bentley with him.

He is our Head of State. He could hardly go on a Ryanair flight with a Ford to take him into Paris.

How are Charles and Camilla getting to Bordeaux?

They could do the journey by TGV in 2 hours 14 minutes at a cost of £14.57 (trainline) or £27.50 (Rail Europe). However, for those prices they would have had to book 90 days in advance. Today's price is around US$370 each.

But thumbs up to Macron for gifting Charles this book about the protection of elephants.

I don't normally criticise peoples' writing but "gifting". Isn't that Americanese? What's wrong with gave?

the French just have it when it comes to style! We don’t in the same way.

I actually think Camilla has looked wonderful and very stylish on this trip. Her formal gown with the cape effect beat Mrs Macron’s(very nice) evening gown hands down.
As for Charles, well he’s a typical land owning English gentleman. Not too bothered about style, but buys good quality clothes that will last a lifetime, and if the fit isn’t quite right any longer, he’s not bothered because he knows it’s a quality item.

William on the other hand, always looks suave and well turned out.

I think people in Spain and Italy are much better dressed.

The Italians - even just ordinary people in the street - look as if they've stepped out of a fashion shoot. Fabulous.

Re Italian style, for some years a dd had an Italian boyfriend who told me that in the Italian workplace you are judged first and foremost on dress, rather than how well you do your job. He said they would size up the brand and cost of everything - ‘even your belt’ - they all had to be expensive ‘designer’.

I said he must surely be exaggerating, but he insisted that he wasn’t.
Some time later I met a young Italian chap - a highly qualified professional - who worked with dh in the U.K. I related this to him, and asked whether it was true.
He said yes, absolutely.
I don’t see anything very admirable in that.

It would almost certainly be Italian designer and so they would be supporting the Italian fashion industry. The one thing the Italians are good at is design. There are other things but no time to think about them now.

I thought when Charles was in Scotland that the tailored tweed jackets he wears with a kilt look beautiful. Beautifully cut.

I also thought that Camilla and Mme Macron also wore beautiful clothes.

Where I live it's quite unusual to see an elegantly dressed French woman. We saw one in the supermarket last week and both of us commented on her outfit although DH doesn't like black and white fabric.

Sparklefizz Fri 22-Sept-23 11:37:37

Charles doesn't need to send his suits to the charity shop. I'm sure his tailor could take in the width of his trouser legs to give a better fit.

Pinkhousegirl Fri 22-Sept-23 11:40:52

I think Brigitte Macron always wears Chanel, she certainly was yesterday. We have many excellent British designers, Camilla did not have to look like the mother of the bride at a wedding in the Cotswolds, and yes, there is an age difference between Macron and the King, but a good tailored suit suits any age, agree Charles did not look businesslike.

funwithgrandma Fri 22-Sept-23 12:03:24

I’m really pleased that both Charles and Camilla spoke in French as well as in English

Charles & Camilla are an embarrassment. What justifiable purpose do they serve in a mature democracy?

Not easy to match, I imagine.

They are definitely NOT an embarrassment.

Far from it.

vegansrock Fri 22-Sept-23 12:18:11

I’m sure the French president has bulletproof proof cars, their car industry is far healthier than ours

Er, well the Entente Cordiale seems more healthy now they have been abd Charles has used his diplomatic skills than when we left democratically elected 🤔 Prime Ministers in charge!

Mamie Fri 22-Sept-23 12:26:47

They have just taken the tram in Bordeaux.

Pippa22 Fri 22-Sept-23 12:27:50

Camillas look in Paris reminded me a bit of Barbara Cartland. A bit too much baby pink for an elderly woman.
Charles often looks scruffy I think despite having well made and good fitting clothes. I think his problem is that he often has his hands dug into his jacket pockets which must stretch to best of clothes.
They did both seem to be very popular and the visit appears to have been successful which is the most important thing.

Nana4 Fri 22-Sept-23 12:46:32

Barbie came to mind when I first saw Camilla outfit 🙀but the struggle with hair, hat and handbag was real, bless her🥵 She looked resplendent in her evening attire, better suited to her age. Poor things, I’d hate their job !!!!🤬

Amalegra Fri 22-Sept-23 12:47:52

I think Charles and and Camilla-should say their Majesties really, I suppose!- looked fine and just what one would expect of them. Not too stylish compared to the Macrons, sure. But I like to think that at least our King is a man of some integrity compared to President Macron and his double dealings, which includes historic attempts to cosy up to the nefarious Vladimir Putin.

grannybuy Fri 22-Sept-23 12:52:13

I thought Madame Macron looks haggard.

DamaskRose Fri 22-Sept-23 13:11:24

I’m afraid I think Mme Macron looks every day of her age, smart clothes don’t do it for me. Camilla doesn’t try to hide her age. As for their menfolk I didn’t even notice! Shallow? Moi? 😂

Buttonjugs Fri 22-Sept-23 13:11:59

Is it just me who can’t think of Charles as King Charles? And as for Camilla…. She doesn’t deserve to be called queen.
