Islamaphobia is getting out of control

We have Braverman and Anderson stirring up the most awful Islamaphobia.

I don’t think that we have ever had British MPs saying such racist and hateful rhetoric since Mosely. They are being backed by the worst sort of editorship. It is so redolent of the 20s and 30s.

Jewish and Christian leaders are calling for it to stop, as well as Tories who see this as a disaster for their party, as it will never ever end well.

Rory Stewart

This idea that “London is in the grip of Islamists” is deluded and it’s awful - an obsession that thrives among a bizarre and dangerous coalition. No conservative MP should ever be spouting this stuff.

I'm at liberty to shop wherever I choose! Without disruption.

In my zone we have nearly 200 primary schools. So no one lives there then?

You don’t seem very clued up about London zoning Glorianny.

Don’t you realise the reference to shopping at Liberty (singular btw) was tongue in cheek?

Correct!

Glorianny Mon 26-Feb-24 14:45:12

I thought in the interests of the history of marches we should have this women marching through London to demand the vote (I bet there were women then complaining they couldn't get to Liberty's!) player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-demonstration-of-suffragettes-1910-online

I didn't say "no-one lives there" I said the majority of people live in Outer London. Check it out.

ronib Mon 26-Feb-24 14:48:41

Joseann. What is the ‘must have’ buy from Liberty these days?
Since when have people marching around ever stopped war crimes? Glorianny It didn’t stop the Biafran war ? In fact I remember the late Queen welcoming the new president of Nigeria in very regal style. In fact I was unable to wave or smile at the entourage in London - I was frozen in horror.

Glorianny Mon 26-Feb-24 14:49:01

Sorry if I didn't get the humour I'm afraid I find it very difficult to understand how anyone can joke about the awful situation in Gaza and the dreadful Islamophobia which is gripping this country.

I expect the protestors will all descend on Liberty after their protesting!
That should boost the economy.

Oh no! It's owned by a private equity firm!

Absolutely no-one is doing that so do not try to suggest they are.

What is all this "It didn't work then" or "look at another conflict"? does it somehow make people feel better about what is happening. Is it really a way of simply washing your hands of responsibility?

Indirectly they are. They joke about the march. The march is protesting about Gaza. They evidently find humour in that, I don't.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 26-Feb-24 14:59:26

Nobody is finding humour in the march - do stop twisting things.

Anniebach Mon 26-Feb-24 15:01:38

Many on the march wear masks or cover their faces, they were elated when ‘To The River From The Sea ‘ was projected onto
Elizabeth Tower , I didn’t have friends there but saw the videos

Joseann Mon 26-Feb-24 15:01:59

Wrong Glorianny. Its no joke trying to battle one's way through any marchers, and if I had my DGC with me in Oxford Street I would be very scared.
I chose to use Liberty as an example to make the point that that is exactly why I go into Central London to shop at the weekend. Because Westfield Stratford doesn't have one. Nowhere else does, does it? The pun on the word, then seemed appropriate.
This thread isn't all about the war itself, it is for analysing people's fears, particularly in the capital, as they go about their daily lives.

ronib Mon 26-Feb-24 15:02:19

Glorianny I have zero responsibility for the actions of wars in far flung countries. The inhabitants and politicians there need to take responsibility for their actions and work out solutions. I find it remarkable that I am implicated by you in wars over which I have zero control.

Unfortunately, I have realised that some people are unable to separate a jokey side comment from the main thrust of a difficult discussion.
It's black humour and often used in times of war, tense situations when something is often painful to think.
Some people take things very literally and cannot understand it.

Rosie51 Mon 26-Feb-24 15:07:07

Glorianny In fact the majority of the population of London do not live in the zones you have mentioned but are in outer London. The actual number depends on how you're classifying inner and outer London. Newham for example doesn't count inner London for statuary purposes but does for statistical purposes. There is a substantial population in zones 1-4, we are not irrelevant.

You were the one claiming where the protestors were marching which is patently wrong. Because your sons didn't go into central London when they lived there must mean no Londoners do is a rather huge assumption. Unable to admit you're wrong you resort to posts like Sorry if I didn't get the humour I'm afraid I find it very difficult to understand how anyone can joke about the awful situation in Gaza and the dreadful Islamophobia which is gripping this country. Nobody is joking about the awful situation in Gaza, it's dishonest and distasteful to say they are.
I think the humour being found is at the inaccurate statements you are making about boosts to the economy, location of marches and that Londoners are not disrupted on a frequent basis. The thread has widened out to include all protestor disruption across London.

The UK supplies arms to Israel. The UK has frequently and consistently refused to condemn Israel in spite of reports that it is an apartheid state. You may think it is nothing to do with us. Others would disagree and land responsibility entirely with the UK. One of the things the marchers want to demonstrate is that they disagree with these actions and support the people of Gaza who have no voice in the international world.

And one thing I can’t recollect ever seeing you do Glorianny, is to find anything positive to say about the UK(especially England) or any posters who don’t share your world view. They don’t just have a different take or point of view, they’re just plain wrong

Anniebach Mon 26-Feb-24 15:19:23

Thread about MP’s making Islamophobia comments does take discussion away from the hideous antisemitism in this country,

For those who don't know the geography, this is Oxford Circus on the Central Line, you can see the underground symbol. How am I supposed to get my train home from shopping in Liberty's with this rabble blocking my passage in broad daylight on a Saturday?

OMG how dare they protest about war crimes and stop you shopping in Liberties!!!!

You’re taking liberties aren’t you? It’s Liberty’s 😁
As an ex Londoner I can tell you that I often worked on a Saturday so had to get into the West End, and when I wasn’t working would go and meet friends, shop or go to the cinema, have a meal or a drink. These weekly marches which have gone on since mid October are a blight on London.

Yeah, spot on, I did wonder why this thread had been started.

Joseann Mon 26-Feb-24 15:22:43

There's no point making this another bad tempered thread. The OP specifically wanted to discuss the London aspect, et voilà.

Perhaps the marchers shop at Liberty's as well.
Although no they couldn't possibly could they? They're all rampant Muslims or disruptive elements aren't they?

Honestly I really think GN has no idea about how most people think and behave. The marchers are just as likely to eat in a restaurant, go shopping or visit a museum as any other person in London. Some may even stay overnight and fill up hotels.

Widen all you want I don't have to go with it.
I'm sticking to the Islamophobia present in the comments. Including the inaccurate assertion the marchers wear masks most don't. And any that do can be asked to remove them.

And the disruption is no worse than any football crowd.
