Islamaphobia is getting out of control

We have Braverman and Anderson stirring up the most awful Islamaphobia.

I don’t think that we have ever had British MPs saying such racist and hateful rhetoric since Mosely. They are being backed by the worst sort of editorship. It is so redolent of the 20s and 30s.

Jewish and Christian leaders are calling for it to stop, as well as Tories who see this as a disaster for their party, as it will never ever end well.

Rory Stewart

This idea that “London is in the grip of Islamists” is deluded and it’s awful - an obsession that thrives among a bizarre and dangerous coalition. No conservative MP should ever be spouting this stuff.

Just for you Callistemon

There were two matches played in London on Saturday. Crystal Palace beat Burnley. Arsenal beat Newcastle. Do you want the actual scores?

Callistemon21 Mon 26-Feb-24 19:32:22

😲 Oh no!

I do find it extraordinary that football fans can push a policeman over but no one is arrested.

When, where, link please? If it happened I imagine it could be the policeman was trying to de-escalate the situation, rather like police don't tend to arrest many at the protests, even when offences are being committed. I notice you're avoiding telling us what happened at Waterloo today. Could that be because you have got it wrong and won't admit it?

It happened at the Waterloo clash and yes it was on Saturday. No idea why my internet gave me Saturday's paper but it did and so I said today, sorry. The police incident is there in the Evening Standard. And you can see it happen on the video they show www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/fight-waterloo-train-station-football-fans-b1141463.html
I do think what causes someone to be arrested is interesting.

Iam64 Mon 26-Feb-24 19:57:52

Lee Anderson is not accepting he said anything wrong. Sunak is refusing to describe his comments as islamophobic. Baroness Warsi is clear Anderson is Islamophobic and describes Braverman as dangerous.
We are living in dangerous times. Naming Islamophobia in no way detracts from anti semitism, as some have suggested.

Do you mean this bit from your link One officer falls over in the pushing and shoving but manages to clamber back to his feet. Now I'm not excusing the fighting but it wasn't a deliberate pushing over of an officer, and it clearly says they were de-escalating the situation. The whole episode was over very quickly. No doubt it was scary for other passengers, but they were able to give the fighters a wide berth. There was no disruption to their journeys, no trains were delayed. Not on the same scale as these Saturday marches and all the other protests London is subjected to.

For the record objecting to the disruption in London every Saturday does not mean that I don't think the situation isn't awful. The hostages need to be released, and peace talks need to happen. Disrupting London week after week is not going to influence either Hamas or Netanyahu.

The police 'couldn't locate' the projector casting the image on to the Elizabeth Tower and yet several people on twitter/X took images of the projector and the man operating it. I suppose those police were also not wanting to create a situation in a hot-headed crowd.

The PM described Mr Anderson’s words as wrong and unacceptable on BBC local radio this morning.

Yes so why can’t he accurately describe it as islamophobic -

Urmstongran Mon 26-Feb-24 20:14:03

Islam is a religion.
Ergo Islamophobia (a made up sound bite) is a bit of a nonsense. Do we have Christianophia? Or Buddismophibia?
No - we do not.

We can criticise or call out any religion, it’s not racist I think we are conflating Islamists and Muslims.

Islamism and extremism are what we should be addressing.
This religion (cult) would throw gays off a roof, stone women for various misdeeds, beheading people etc. Mediaeval practices.

Apparently, Conservatives no longer use the word "islamophobic".This is what Kemi Badenoch tweeted. Make of it what you will.

The label is irrelevant. "Discrimination against Muslims" is a bit of a mouthful, but that's what it is and it doesn't really matter what you call it.

growstuff Mon 26-Feb-24 20:17:15

PS. "Islam*ism*" is a made-up concept.

Urmstongran Mon 26-Feb-24 20:26:18

Sharia law in this country - religious intolerance , indoctrinating young people, lack of respect for women - what’s not to like - its not fear that gets to people - it’s their medieval thinking.

Where is my country going?
See that pan?
Down there.

Urmstongran Mon 26-Feb-24 20:31:32

I think (?) we are in agreement growstuff.
Separating out Muslim from Islam?

growstuff Mon 26-Feb-24 20:32:43

This is just some of the abuse Dawn Butler has received for calling out islamophobic (sorry, anti-muslim) hate.

Errr ... no! Muslims believe in Islam. Islamist seems to be a new word the right-wing media has recently invented.

What do you actually know about how Sharia law operates in the UK? It has no legal standing and most Muslims have no time for it. There is absolutely no chance it will be legitimised in the UK - unless something catastrophic happens.

Watch the link Rosie51 see how he goes down
In the shocking images those taking part can be seen running at police as travellers at the station witness the violence unfolding on the busy concours.
The travellers are reported as "terrified" which is a bit more than having your shopping disrupted.

So are we saying that the way we use the word Islamophobia these days is technically incorrect? That it was originally used to mean a "fear", but then it evolved into meaning an aversion or a "hatred"? So it now means something negative and sinister.
The valid reason I see for that, is that that fear is escalating at such an alarming rate in this country as to overwhelm us. We can hardly draw breath.

Urmstongran Mon 26-Feb-24 20:48:18

Well, Sometime soon, there's going to be another, unmistakable, undeniable, "trademark" atrocity, everyone here knows that. And when that happens, head scratching and navel gazing won't cut it.

Don't ask me Joseann. It was Kemi Badenoch who said the Conservatives don't use it. I'm sorry, but I'm not overwhelmed by fear. Maybe it's because I watch the wrong TV programmes or read the wrong newspapers. It does seem that certain people have an interest in stoking up fear.

Urmstongran Mon 26-Feb-24 20:50:33

There is no such thing as Islamophobia. It’s an artificial construct designed to shut down debate.

growstuff Mon 26-Feb-24 20:52:06

PS. I would be more fearful if I were Jewish or Muslim.

Joseann Mon 26-Feb-24 20:52:58

Re protesters at Waterloo, it looks like Liverpool Street had similar problems.
Note the masks too.

No, it's a word to describe discriminatory hatred of Muslims. Maybe you would rather not acknowledge that it exists.
