Breaking news, just now.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 22:12:16

If O/P's give references to sources we can check them.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 22:14:31

Surely she knew of the mud thrown from the right wing press,
she must have known,

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 22:16:14

The Times should check in further that due diligence has been done

Willow any newspaper that’s part of the Murdoch regime (which the Times is) does not know the meaning of due diligence.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 22:19:40

Anniebach

Surely she knew of the mud thrown from the right wing press,

I genuinely think not in this case. They knew maximum distress and confusion caused by not arranging an interview with both her and the LP before publishing.

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 22:33:35

For me, the absolute ‘certainty’ with which the article is written is vile. The claim that ‘Abbot is being barred’ is conveyed as fact, when it’s nothing of the sort. The authors of this dangerous cr** knew exactly what they were doing!

Casdon Wed 29-May-24 22:40:56

The problem is that while some of us are tuned in to spot fake news, many swallow hook line and sinker what the media says, and continue to argue the toss even when it’s proved to be a lie. That’s what the press in particular rely on, the tarnishing of reputations.

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 22:46:56

Casdon 👏👏👏

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 22:51:29

I cannot believe someone who has been MP for 37 years has been in the papers often didn’t know of the lies so often printed in the press ,

Sarnia Wed 29-May-24 22:53:38

She didn't look very well on BBC News. She was being supported either side and was very shaky holding the microphone.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 22:59:11

I too noticed her shaking, couldn’t be cause of the cameras, poor woman

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 23:12:56

In retrospect she needed to check out quite a lot before tweeting, but hindsight is a great thing.

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 23:28:36

Agreed Willow. However, I do think the fact that she obviously believed the Times article unquestioningly and took straight to Twitter (X) and other media outlets, rather than clarifying things with someone from the LP first, shows a certain lack of judgment on her part - perhaps rather like the letter she wrote that started this whole debacle!

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 23:46:59

There has also been an avoidance of making any decision on Abbot - which has come back to bite. I wonder why she hadn't asked before, when Corbyn made his decision to stand as an Independent.

nanna8 Thu 30-May-24 02:22:29

Maybe it is time for her to bow out gracefully. Many politicians stay past their use by date which is a shame when they have been wonderful in their day.

DiamondLily Thu 30-May-24 05:01:50

She’s decided to fight as an independent, after a deal, for her to retire, broke down.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 08:15:41

A MP of 37 years believed the right wing press, such innocence

tickingbird Thu 30-May-24 08:41:46

Well how very wrong you are. I live fairly close to community of Orthodox Jews and work in the area. I know ( first hand ) that at the medical centre there is a separate entrance, purpose built for women. I know the women marry very ,very young. I know they have an entirely separate and much diminished schooling system for all . Girls leave education at around 12 years old.
I know that the families are very large and ponder as to how they support themselves.

Oh you know all about it because you live near a community do you?

Sounds like Hasidic ULTRA Orthodox. They aren’t representative of the much wider Jewish community which, in its entirety is very small.

However, I have actually lived in an inner city area for several years, highly populated by Muslims, mostly Pakistani but also from Africa or the Middle East.

AR wasn’t in a mosque. She was meeting local men (Muslim) desperately trying to garner their votes. Those men met her due to her position as deputy leader but they don’t generally believe women should play any part in shaping the commmunity. They’ll make sure the women are registered to vote (usually postal) and they’ll decide who the vote goes to.

AR knows this as does KS but values and principles go out of the window when you’re chasing votes.

LizzieDrip Thu 30-May-24 09:02:24

DiamondLily where does the article say “She’s decided to fight as an independent”? It quotes DA saying she intends to remain an MP for as long as possible but it doesn’t say she’ll be standing as an Independent. A decision hasn’t yet been made on whether or not she can stand for Labour. So, she may stand as a Labour candidate - we don’t know yet.

zakouma66 Thu 30-May-24 09:11:50

Oh you know all about it because you live near a community do you?

Rather rude but I know a little from observations, reading and from colleagues who work with the community.

Those men met her due to her position as deputy leader but they don’t generally believe women should play any part in shaping the commmunity

I don't know " those men" so wouldn't care to comment. Many Muslim women are extemely active in shaping their communities.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 09:14:21

Angela Rayner?

maddyone Thu 30-May-24 09:36:30

Whether any of us know those men we probably all saw the picture or the coverage. Whatever AR was doing meeting people in those particular circumstances, I’m afraid I believe that particular meeting was unfortunately representative of the current situation in some areas of Britain today. Not a single woman present except AR! How does that sit with you? I think it’s disgraceful because it tells me that however much we bleat on on Gransnet about how women died to give us the vote, there are clearly groups of women in our society who are totally disenfranchised from the system due to dominance by men!

maddyone Thu 30-May-24 09:41:22

With regard to Diane Abbott, which this thread is about, I’m already bored by the ongoing dominance in the news about this. This is one MP! Every time I watch a news bulletin there it is, dominating the news as if there’s nothing else going on. Whether she is able to stand for parliament for Labour doesn’t affect most of us who are more concerned with who we might vote for in our own constituencies.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 09:45:42

Agree Maddy

MayBee70 Thu 30-May-24 09:56:25

I agree, too. Especially on a day when Keir wanted to talk about the NHS. Dianne Abbott has been a groundbreaking admirable politician but I do think she should now retire gracefully. She hasn’t been well for years and sometimes comes across as confused. One of the reasons people gave at the last election was that they didn’t think she would have been a good Home Secretary. I don’t seem to recall Corbyn tolerating politicians that didn’t adhere to his ruling and have a vivid memory of him glaring at Hilary Benn who was making a speech in Parliament that I totally agreed with.

LizzieDrip Thu 30-May-24 10:08:31

maddyone hear, hear👏👏👏

MSM is making a mountain out of a molehill on this. I suppose it’s all they’ve got to ‘beat’ Labour with at the moment but, like you, I’m sick of hearing about it. As you say, it’s one MP - the GE is much bigger and more important than one person.
