Glorianny

Am I alone in remembering far left as those who wanted to nationalise everything? Blair got rid of Clause 4, so the party moved to the right. The far left produced some excellent MPs who believed in worker's rights, established and fought for a free NHS and decent education. They were dedicated and moral people. It's a pity there aren't more like them in the party today.
Let's remember
Aneurin Bevan
Barbara Castle
Tony Benn
Clare Short
John Smith
Robin Cook
All to the left of today's LP

But, but, but...

COMMUNISTS.... wink

I liked John Smith and Tony Benn in particular.

People of integrity and commitment

Yes, agreed! John Smith was probably the best PM we never had - sadlysad

I would not be remotely surprised to discover that if the polls don’t start shifting after the manifesto today that the Tories don’t start eyeing up the possibility of joining up with reform.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 11-Jun-24 06:32:24

Before the election I should have added.

DiamondLily Tue 11-Jun-24 07:42:29

Well, the latest rumours are that, if the polls don’t move, Sunak will be out.

How on earth the Tories think this will work, halfway through an election campaign, is unclear.

Is Sunak a post turtle?

MayBee70 Tue 11-Jun-24 08:13:37

I’m pretty sure the reason why Sunak called the election was because he knew they were plotting to remove him.

MaizieD Tue 11-Jun-24 08:21:15

There can't be a tory alive who believes that their party can actually win this election, the very most they can hope for is damage limitation.

According to the voice of X/twitter no party has ever changed its leader in the middle of an election campaign. What would be the point? It couldn't be done in the time available, the most they could achieve would be an interim leader chosen from ..... where? (Technically there are no tory MPs any more.)How would that attract any more than a handful of votes?

They'll do just as well to wait a few weeks and let him resign. Once they have their new MPs they'll have a better idea of the future.

I think that there is a level of panic in the Tory party that they have never experienced before, and panic does not make rational or good decisions.

Casdon Tue 11-Jun-24 09:13:10

I think MaizieD makes a good point about choosing a new leader from the cohort who are elected. Changing the leader now would not change what happens at the election, but it could result in the wrong choice of hastily appointed leader, who may even not be re-elected. Regroup after the election and then reform is surely the way forward.

MaizieD Tue 11-Jun-24 09:16:16

The interesting part will be seeing which way the new cohort leans. Will it be right wing or more centrist?

maddyone Tue 11-Jun-24 09:45:31

Sunak has to lead the party into the election, despite knowing the outcome before the event. It would be sheer cowardice to leave now. Mind you, after leaving the D Day commemorations early……..

Whitewavemark2 Tue 11-Jun-24 09:49:30

Who of the far right are likely to loose their seat is also factor.

One Portillo moment for me would be Braverman.

Grantanow Tue 11-Jun-24 10:57:41

Sunak should sack Braverman from the Party for disloyalty. As to where are the Tories heading: clearly in a mad panic towards the political exit.

I don’t think Sunak has any intention of quitting, at least not until after the election. But I do think his party, y’know the one that gave us the unelected Liz Truss as PM because they thought she was fit to lead the country, is quite capable of trying to replace him with some sort of populist leader if it might keep them in power.

No. Just no. He is a disgrace.

Wyllow3 Wed 12-Jun-24 11:30:53

The first item on the conservative Manifesto is the Conscription scheme, which may attract a few but has widely been rejected, and we now have the supposed saving of 17 billion on tax cuts. Which will really be a continuation of austerity. When will us Brits accept that you can't get health and care and education considerations - but not pay for them?

Babamaman Wed 12-Jun-24 11:41:40

I pray for neither - don’t want him in the house - he never attended the EU parliament - took the salary, still takes the pension ! Again will be laughing all the way to the bank!
Farage has absolutely no policies for the good of this country, his no.1 priority is himself and how much he can top up his bank account and we won’t see him for dust!

Sadly my guess is more right wing! I think Sunak is pretty centralist really
