How can anyone defend this in any way?

“Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer engulfed in the Olympic gender row, cried “I am a woman” after easily-winning another bout to guarantee a medal.

In raucous, emotionally-charged scenes at Paris Nord Arena, 600 French-Algerians ferociously cheered another victory for the controversy-stricken fighter. Khelif was overcome with emotion, crying uncontrollably after the unanimous decision victory over Hungarian Luca Anna Hamori.

She sank to her knees, pretending to write her name on the canvas, but then refused to stop for most questions from a pack of 300 assembled journalists. “I feel good,” she initially told the BBC. “It’s the first medal for a woman from Algeria. I’m very happy. I want to thank all the world, the Arabic world. Thank you so much.”

She then added to Algerian TV: “I dominated. I dedicate this victory to the people of Algeria.”

She later swept through the media mixed zone, fighting back tears with an Algerian flag wrapped around her back. After she stopped very briefly, Algerian reporters claimed she declared: “I want to tell the entire world that I am a woman, and I will remain a woman.”

Yet still a man, absent mindedly rearranging his 'tackle' before fighting the female boxer!

I feel very angry for the (real) women who have trained and worked so hard for this Olympics , only to have victory snatched from them so unfairly. In many sports there is only likely to be one games when players are at the top of their game and in with a chance. Next time will be too late, so a lifetime’s ambition is crushed by a cheat, and worse, it happens in plain sight with the support of the authorities.

Imagine you’d been asleep for 30 years and were kissed by a prince and awoke to the coverage of these olympics. Men who look like men boxing as women. Hard to believe isn’t it

Like waking up in some dark fantasy world where nothing is as it seems.

There is a legitimate question about the so-called "sport" of boxing, the object of which is to win by badly hurting your opponent.

This is not a sport compared to running, cycling, tennis, swimming, football, high jump, sailing, hockey, gymnastics, etc where you win if you perform better that you opponent.

Callistemon213 Mon 05-Aug-24 19:04:20

Well, it's not a sport I enjoy watching or would want any of my family to participate in but we do know a female gold medallist boxer and the aim is to win by strategic methods, not brute force.

Unfortunately, the two most likely to win at these Olympics will win by brute force.
The IOC seems to be lagging behind other organisations and should be insisting on genetic testing, simple to carry out, not at all intrusive.

Yes, your right Callistemon. I would never watch boxing, think it awful, even more so female boxers. But to see females being beaten by a man that claims to be a woman is the worst thing ever. Testing has to be carried out and must be done on these two male boxers before they get their criminally got medals!

I find it difficult not to see it as a form of domestic abuse - the male beating the female I mean. Though I share varian’s comment on boxing as sport

I agree Iam64 it's no different to domestic abuse when it's a boxer with male advantage boxing a female. I'm not keen on boxing as a sport for men or women, but at least the participants should be giving informed consent to be a participant.
