I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

So Starmer announces he is going to get tough on rioters.

How come he didn’t get tough on the Romanian community in Leeds recently who were burning cars, turning over ambulances, throwing rocks etc?

At least he didn’t get tough like Boris Johnson did…
‘Three unusable water cannon bought by Boris Johnson when he was mayor of London have been sold for scrap, at a net loss of more than £300,000.

Johnson bought the crowd-control vehicles from the German police in 2014, in anticipation of social unrest, without checking whether they could be used on London’s streets. In one of his most humiliating episodes as mayor, the then home secretary, Theresa May, banned them from use anywhere in England and Wales. It left the capital’s taxpayers with three expensive white elephants.

The current mayor, Sadiq Khan, pledged to claw back as much money as possible on the redundant vehicles by selling them. But after almost two years the mayor’s office admitted defeat in its attempt to find a reputable buyer.

It announced on Monday that it had agreed to sell the vehicles for just £11,025 to Reclamations Ollerton, a scrap metal yard in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

The fee recoups 3.4% of the £322,834.71 spent on the vehicles since 2014.

The 25-year-old vehicles cost £85,022 in 2014, but they were found to be riddled with faults and required expensive modification to make them roadworthy. This included £32,000 to comply with the city’s low emission zone, and almost £1,000 on new stereos’.

Casdon is saying there is resurgence in the popularity of the EDL and similar organisations. The protest (can it even be called a protest) at the cenotaph, the anti Palestine stuff was all organised by the EDL and TR too

As with everything else it all depends on where you source your information. Approximately 30 minutes ago I listened to an expert on integration speaking about this and he said he understands the EDL doesn’t have a website and as far he knows it doesn’t really exist as an organisation. That’s not to say these rioters aren’t despicable and I will not tolerate being accused of supporting them.

People need to wake up to lazy, inaccurate reporting and then come on here repeating it.

They're the same scum, different label.

Are you suggesting Starmer is getting tough on the riots aimed at the Muslim community and immigrants. That he deliberately avoided getting tough on the rioters in Leeds? I may have misunderstood your post.

I’m relieved the PM met with police chiefs today and hope we see police officers more able to protect themselves (and the dogs ) from thugs fuelled on alcohol rage and who knows what else

Wyllow3 Thu 01-Aug-24 19:46:23

I think Starmer is announcing it now after a number of build up events that have reached a critical point... the rioting on Tuesday night in Southport was followed up by the riot in London (and some other cities) on Wednesday.

That critical point is a recognition of what the police face, and guidelines and agreements across different forces. Hopefully it will help situations like at Harehill for the police.

I think term "Racist' is still very much needed, although people shouldn't just use it without qualifying what they mean by it, just as terms like right or left wing need qualifying.

For example, the attack on the mosque in the riot on Tuesday night was racist.

Iam64 Thu 01-Aug-24 19:49:08

Many of the attacks chants and slogan t shirts have been racist.

MayBee70 Thu 01-Aug-24 19:54:11

It said on the news last night that some of the protesters in London had t shirts with pictures of the murdered children on them sad.

Iam64 Thu 01-Aug-24 20:00:43

They did MayBee, drunken thugs wearing images of the murdered children as they canted racist slurs and attacked our police

😡😡😡😡😡😡😡!!!

Iam64 Thu 01-Aug-24 20:26:03

One thing that’s been bothering me is mask or balaclava wearing by those involved in protest marches, but particularly those involved in the riots we’ve seen recently
Is it unreasonable to expect this to be banned

Surely not the little girls? Not that it matters, they are still children. I can’t believe I’m writing this.

Something is going terribly wrong.

Wyllow3 Thu 01-Aug-24 21:03:25

Yes, the murdered girls. I found this picture in the Daily Mail or some of the protestors (hope you don't mind me posting it on the other thread as well Maybee)

As well as chants "oh Tommy Robinson" etc

This brand of far right is organised very differently from traditional politics, but that doesnt mean they dont exist!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Aug-24 21:04:44

Keir Starmer, "Let me now turn to the actions of a tiny mindless minority in our society"

"The community of Southport had to suffer twice.. A gang of thugs got on trains and buses, went to a community that is not their own, grieving the most horrific tragedy and then proceeded to throw bricks at police officers"

"The same police officers who just 24 hours earlier had to deal with an attack on children in their community"

"Make no mistake, whether it's in Southport, London or Hartlepool. These people are showing our country exactly who they are.. Mosques targeted.. Flares thrown at a statue of Winston Churchill.. A Nazi salute at the Cenotaph"

"I've just chaired a meeting with senior police leaders where we've resolved to show who we are.. A country that will not allow understandable fear to curdle into division and hate in our communities.. That will not permit the breakdown of law and disorder on our streets"

"It's not protest.. It's not legitimate.. It's crime.. Violent disorder.. An assault on the rule of law.. And execution of justice"

"So on behalf of the British people who expect their values and their security to be upheld, we will put a stop to it"

LizzieDrip Thu 01-Aug-24 21:09:08

I cannot see how you have answered what Primrose has asked. Nothing to do with Boris, but all to do with Starmer. Avoiding the issue. Why is he not clamping down on ALL thugs, but just white British ones it seems.

Wyllow3 Thu 01-Aug-24 21:38:11

"Why is he not clamping down on ALL thugs, but just white British ones it seems."

Where does he say or imply he's only doing that? Of course it's across the board. It's just that these are the most recent and as I said above the critical trigger point.

Urmstongran Thu 01-Aug-24 21:40:55

The rioting in Leeds comes to my mind.
I totally think some communities experience 2nd tier policing. That’s what pisses people off.

And yet, they’d have been brilliant at dispersing rioters. French police use them with impunity and no outrage. So, why us? Why do we always hold back?

MayBee70 Thu 01-Aug-24 21:51:50

But they didn’t work!

nanaK54 Thu 01-Aug-24 21:52:36

I can't believe that t-shirt, how awful sad

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Aug-24 22:08:22

French police are armed.

We police very differently in this country.

The two situations are very different and can’t possibly be compared.

The mob in London was demanding Farage as prime minister and Robinson for Home Secretary.

Farage is undoubtedly stirring over social media which has been utterly irresponsible and condemned universally, for undermining the police, who job is difficult enough as it is without a member of the House of Commons criticising them.

The groups we watched are beginning to see themselves as agents of violence snd have imo crossed the line between a protest group and one of violence. They rioted in 3 areas. I think they therefore need banning and should be prosecuted under riot.

The good thing is that these extreme right groups are tiny in number, and on the whole they are not tolerated by the public at large, so swift action by the courts without sensationalising by Farage or his cronies, is the way to go.

In Southport, it wasn't "community rioting". It was alleged and seems to be confirmed from the addresses of those arrested that the thugs were imported. It pisses off the people who travel quite long distances to have a scrap and then portray themselves as victims. It wasn't community rioting in London or Hartlepool either.

growstuff Thu 01-Aug-24 23:03:05

Hopefully, enough people can see through their tactics and they backfire on them.

maddyone Thu 01-Aug-24 23:03:07

I have no words to describe my disgust for those people wearing tee shirts with images of the murdered children.
What must their parents think? I hope they don’t see them.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 02-Aug-24 08:13:24

At least 19 more so called rallies by far right groups are planned for the coming days.

These are intended to take place outside mosques and asylum seekers hostels.

It must be incredibly difficult for the police trying to contain these groups, and I very much hope a plan is soon put into place that deals with these groups.

Guardian report

A “national capability” will be established to tackle violent disorder and rioters, Keir Starmer has announced, as he warned social media firms they had a responsibility to clamp down on misinformation.
Speaking after violent disorder followed the Southport stabbing attack, the prime minister said the initiative would “pull together” intelligence and action across the country’s police forces. This would range from “the immediate challenge, which is clearly driven by far-right hatred” and “all violent disorder” that flares, regardless of motivation.

The “national capability” will aim to improve intelligence gathering and sharing on “extremist troublemakers” after police were surprised by the scale of disorder on Tuesday in Southport, with further unrest in London, Manchester, Hartlepool and Aldershot on Wednesday night.
The new initiative should identify agitators from all parts of the ideological spectrum, while enhancing the sharing of community tension indicators and the coordination of mutual aid, where specially riot-trained officers are rushed from one area to another”

I do know that the intelligent agencies are also heavily involved in trying to stop this behaviour.

Don’t these young blokes have jobs to go to? I saw some footage of the riot up in Southport. Nearly all young men under 30 - what, exactly, are they crapping on about ? Do they even know, or is it some sort of weird social event? Those poor parents who have lost children, it must be very, very upsetting for them.
