Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

So now they are setting fire to the hotel which is housing untold numbers of men, women and children.

Attempted murder in my book.

It is. I could weep. What have we become.

I've just read The Prime Minuster's speech on a different thread.
A gang of thugs, got on trains and buses
Went to a community that is not their own..

AGAA4 Sun 04-Aug-24 15:41:06

It's gone too far. Trying to burn people is horrifying.

Wyllow3 Sun 04-Aug-24 15:42:35

Its worth probably reading that bit of the speech in context

*Because in the aftermath of this attack

The community of Southport had to suffer twice.

A gang of thugs, got on trains and busses…

Went to a community that is not their own…

A community grieving the most horrific tragedy…

And then proceeded to throw bricks at police officers.

Police officers who just 24 hours earlier…

Had been having to deal with an attack on children in their community.

Their community*

the full speech is on this thread

Apart from the full weight of the law, I hope the firemen turn their full hoses on them to cool them down, before they are taken away in handcuffs.

Let’s cut to the chase. These riots are not over some high ideals. The likes of Fürage (Tommy Robinson in a suit) are pulling the strings, sending these mindless idiots in to do their dirty work and sitting back rubbing their hands in glee.
Reform isn’t a political party it’s a Public Limited Company owned by Farage- check it out on the government web site. They are highly organised and putting out stuff on social media that is pure propaganda. Using images of a lion draped in a Union Jack when in fact a nest of vipers would be more appropriate,
Children died. Tragically and needlessly. They have used this to stir up hatred against Muslims when there is no proof that the boy-killer was even of that faith. We didn’t see this reaction when little children and their teachers were massacred by Thomas Hamilton in Dunblane.
So simply - this is orchestrated violence whipped up by the far-right whatever name you care to call them. Whatever you political leanings, however you feel about welcoming asylum seekers or repulsing them, these riots are a disgrace. They have no place in a civilised society and here is the message from us

I voted reform but no way on this earth would I support trouble makers like this, they want locking up.. I would say most people who lean towards the right are more fed up with all this illegal migration & worry for their own children/ grandchildren future- but they would not dream of attacking the police or anyone else

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 04-Aug-24 16:02:56

Well, Joseann I expect that these dancers, and others, will be on their way to my small seaside town next week for our annual festival.
Our area has high levels of deprivation, a significant immigrant population and has a good view of Calais on a clear day. Asylum seekers are housed here.
With a few exceptions, this community manages to work and play together harmoniously and is welcoming to thousands of visitors throughout the year.
And no we are not in any Disney films ( although our seafront does appear in advisements occasionally).

So what exactly is your Reform MP doing to diffuse this situation?

This saddens me. Did you not realise what they stood for?

Yes of course there are many homeless just as there are in other towns but as you walk past and pop a coin or two into their hand and wish them good day, they are always cheerful, grateful and polite

Are you living in the Mary Poppins film?

😂

I hope they had a cap to doff.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 04-Aug-24 16:16:36

The police have done remarkably I think.

They have calmed the situation without too much violence.

These rioters are the Terrorists on our streets, as defined by The Crown Prosecution service.
I hope the perpetrators are charged with Terrorism and are sentenced to the maximum punishment.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 04-Aug-24 16:27:55

Let’s not hear the accusation of two tier policing ever again!

What the police have had to put up with this weekend bears no relationship to the protest marches.

It is a lie and should not be repeated.

To label every single one of those people as thugs is just plain ignorant. Many are ,as I have said a couple of times now, but others have GENUINE feelings of fear and resentment because they are disadvantaged and can’t see a way out of their situation. This black and white view and calling people Nazis is appalling and needs calling out. People are not rioting because they are happy.

They may not all have done this, but every single individual who deliberately damaged people's brick walls so they could use the bricks as a missile to aim at the police; every individual who decided to set fire to someone's car (maybe a disadvantaged family who needed it for work?); every individual who helped to torch a building or aim beer cans at the police... is a thug.

Fear and anxiety is not a reason to create yet more fear and anxiety among those living in that street, or that location, among those who might be too afraid to open their front door and who had to have their walls repaired, or who came out to clear up the debris the rioters left behind. It's an excuse.

Rioters in Rotherham have now placed themselves outside a Holiday Inn hotel housing immigrants chanting get them out. They have thrown bricks at windows and set a large bin on fire outside the hotel entrance.

What next - lynching?

This is not protest, this is mob violence. By thugs - with banners chanting "English 'til I die".

They are protecting our "English" way of life - apparently.

Dickens Sun 04-Aug-24 16:46:25

The riots in Southport started because it was falsely put out on social media that the 17 year old perpetrator was a recent arrival on a dinghy. Presumed to be Muslim, hence the attack on a local mosque.

Turned out he was born in the UK to parents from Rwanda. No matter I suspect to the rioters.

Do they even know the majority religion in Rwanda? Muslims make up only around 2% of the population. Look it up. The majority religion is Catholic and Protestant.

Washerwoman Sun 04-Aug-24 16:57:38

A close relative of ours partner is yet again on duty today after a night in hospital after the riots on Tuesday. He could still be on leave but chose to go back and support his colleagues. Without riot gear he would be seriously injured or worse. As an animal lover I can't help worry about the dogs injured. One badly burned the other day.I feel so angry and worried.

MayBee70 Sun 04-Aug-24 17:05:33

Given the speed at which these riots happened they were just waiting for something like this to give them the excuse they needed. So had to spread false information to suit their agenda. Were never going to let the truth get in the way. Maybe, in the long term this will go against them in that simmering discontent will be addressed and the lies that they spread will be exposed. It is also a rallying cry for those of us that are horrified by the attempt by many to divide us? But how sad that the deaths of those poor children has resulted in all of this. I don’t know how people that have used that can live with themselves sad.
