I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

Have to say I have never heard of the EDL. Don’t think I want to know about whatever it is,either, by the sounds of it. Is it peculiar to the UK ?

EDL is the English Defence League. Thugs led by rabble rousers like Tommy Robinson. Very similar in attitude to the football supporters gangs which got so much publicity for their violence and mindless destructive tendencies in the 1980s.

They think they are great patriots defending the English way of life.

They sound particularly nasty, thanks for replying MaisieD

Have just read reports that they were "professional rioters", driven there to cause mayhem, what has happened to this country!!

I say again who has a monopoly on the truth, you Iam?

I don’t know the truth about the background to these dreadful murders
I don’t pretend to.

People are frustrated at not knowing the truth, the police have to be bland in statements because of law restrictions, I think from europe

This left a vacuum and the brainless yobs filled it with hateful mob behavior

What has it to do with Europe?

As regards "the truth"

imo The police are rightly cautious issuing information until it's absolutely clear to them and done responsibly not bit by bit revelations on factors that come to light slowly and need checking.

The problems have/had been the initial gross SM post on X that identified the attacker by false name and origin.

This led to a thread on the topic now deleted in GN because GN posters were reporting it as fact and claiming they had "the truth" - only to be proved dreadfully wrong,

Those were the very same SM X rumours that fed the riots last night where (to update) 50 - yes 50 police were injured by the EDL. Despite the X rumour had been proved wrong before the riots took place.

It was far too early for the police to make full statements before this speculation begun

but as you rightfully said re the riots "hateful mob behavior"

Urmstongran, please no more what ifs or stirring. You know very little about the young man, please wait with your comments until you do.It's not the time.

The riots were dreadful caused by the far right mob who can't wait to have a go at the police. There was an appeal last night by the family of one of the victims to stop the violence. These grieving people should not have to go through this as well .
I know our thoughts and prayers are with them and their community.

You're very quick to condem the rioters as "far right". Could be far left as well, for all you know. Rioters in Paris comes to mind. Very quick to judge all those who are angry about this. No I do not condone any rioting, and certainly attacks on the police and emergency services are beyond reprehensible.

growstuff Wed 31-Jul-24 12:48:11

So who were these rioters? Tommy Robinson was inciting his followers all day to go to Southport. Unless another group got in on the act, the likelihood is that these were EDL thugs. The EDL is a far right group, using the normal definition.

The EDL is a very far right organisation. Its roots go back to the BNP. No point in denying this.

Its key values are Islamophobia and opposition to our political establishment (including Conservatives) as being soft an ineffective. Tommy Robinson's views are well known and documented.

In his escape from the country
"On Sunday, the founder of the English Defence League went to the Channel Tunnel terminal at Folkestone, where police officers stopped him under counter-terrorism powers

How dare the BNP use a community like this in distress?

This- just the very last thing the family and communtiy needed at this terrible time.

It is sickening that some MPs approve of this, and we know that some her on GN support them too. Yaxley aka Robinson is a massive traitor, has left the UK on an Irish Passport and lives in Spain. He should never be allowed to return to UK, and Spain should kick him out too.

Iam64 Wed 31-Jul-24 14:04:04

Freya, the EDL like the BNP is a far right organisation. I’m surprised you weren’t aware of that
The behaviour of their thugs last night is typical of the organisation. They claim to be patriotic yet attack our police and emergency services. Fifty officers and some police dogs injured last night. Some of the officers would have been involved in responding to the murderous attacks on those little girls and teachers

Amazing comment- as we all know that so called Tommy Robinson was behind the whole thing, uring EDL members to go to Southport. The situation in Paris comes from a totally different angle- and comparing the two is, sorry, massively ignorant.

They wanted the killer to be a migrant. They wanted the killer to be muslin. But, if he wasn’t they were going to riot anyway
sad

Fleurpepper Wed 31-Jul-24 14:20:57

Merseyside Police confirm the 17-year-old suspect was born in Cardiff, contrary to online claims that he was an immigrant who arrived by small boat ‘A 17-year-old male from Banks in Lancashire, who was born in Cardiff, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives’.

Fleurpepper Wed 31-Jul-24 14:24:58

Bravo the people of Southport.

This is how Southport responded.

A group of around 100 members of the community are repairing damage to the local mosque, seen here rebuilding a wall.

St Luke’s Road, last night strewn with rubble and debris, has already been cleared.

Wonderful.

I was amazed to see a reporter on the news last night standing outside the boys parent's house.. How insensitive can that be... and surprising that his parents haven't been attacked as a result of that.. let's hope it all calms down now.. and the poor police, having been so crucial at the crime scene, can all recover..

Posters need to stop spouting fake news. It works both ways. The EDL hasn’t existed for over a decade and the BNP probably longer. Rioters yes but labels don’t help and talk of a certain mp making much of this tragedy is also rubbish. No complaints when Labour mp’s rush to cosy up to certain communities and burnish their virtue signalling credentials.

Iam64 Wed 31-Jul-24 15:19:20

pascal30, I wouldn’t be surprised if his parents haven’t been moved to a police safe house. Banks a small place, easy to identify his home .

The EDL has existed since 2009.

Did people from these communities desecrate a vigil for murdered girls and pre-plan a bust up with police?

I didn’t see either our mayor or the mp for Rochdale ‘rush to cosy up to certain communities and burnish their virtue signalling credentials’.

Me too. That would be sensible with tensions so high.

Your mayor? Who’s talking about your mayor? I’ve lost count of the times Labour MP’s rush to appease their core voters and please don’t feign ignorance of whom I refer. I’m not looking to argue.

Growstuff the EDL has been in decline for years and is no longer anything to do with Tommy Robinson (i have no idea if he fronts another group)I don’t even know if the BNP exist anymore.Thugs are thugs regardless of their ethnicity and as for far right don’t make me laugh. Do you seriously believe those hooligans causing trouble last night have a clue about politics? No different to labelling the Leeds rioters as far left.

Interesting that the police, quite rightly in my opinion, used batons and riot shields last night, but took the softly softly approach in Leeds. Some would say that’s two tier policing.

Iam64 Wed 31-Jul-24 16:26:41

I’m talking about Andy Burnham who did all he could to inform people not to rush to judgement based on the first video released from Manchester airport.
I agree the thugs aren’t interested or knowledgable about politics. The lot in Southport were anti Muslim

Oreo Wed 31-Jul-24 16:35:49

Hard to make any sense of the awful tragedy in Southport, or of any such killing and attacks on young children.
