The US Election.

With only 3 weeks to go, perhaps we can start to watch the shenanigans taking place in the USA.

Trump is warning America of his intention post election.

“Donald Trump has provoked an angry backlash from Democrats after calling for the US armed forces to be turned against his political adversaries when voters go to the polls at next month’s presidential election.
In comments that added further fuel to fears of an authoritarian crackdown if he recaptures the White House, the Republican nominee said the military or national guard should be deployed against opponents that he called “the enemy within” when the election takes place on 5 November.
He singled out the California congressman, Adam Schiff, who was the lead prosecutor in the ex-president’s first impeachment trial, as posing a bigger threat to a free and fair election than foreign terrorists or illegal immigrants, his usual prime target for abuse.
Trump’s comments, to Fox News in response to a question on possible election “chaos”, triggered an angry reaction from Kamala Harris’s campaign, which likened them to previous remarks that he would be a dictator “on day one” of a second presidency and his suggestions that the US constitution should be terminated to overturn the 2020 election result, which he falsely claims was stolen by Joe Biden”.

Nmama, no you are definitely not all crazy, or at least we have family in NYC and The Orange County who don’t seem to be crazy, and you don’t sound crazy either.
And am pretty sure people outside the UK thought we must all be crazy for voting for Boris Johnson and Brexit.
We did neither btw.

That is a word-salad to beat all word-salads.

What on earth is he trying to say?

And this man, if he wins, is going to be one of the most powerful men in the world?

I feel I'm living in some sort of parallel universe - aren't there any Republicans who will stand up and say that the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes?

halfpint1 Sun 03-Nov-24 19:11:37

Reading that speech is frightening.

LizzieDrip Sun 03-Nov-24 19:25:16

OMG😱 This man is not well.

Babs03 Sun 03-Nov-24 19:45:12

Somebody bring on the men in the white coats, this man is either on something or should be.
But joking aside....what the hell?

Nmama Sun 03-Nov-24 20:49:00

Well, Trump is obviously sensitive about the fact that people have been saying "Why does he keep on bringing up an old movie about a cannibalistic serial killer? Why does he call him 'the late, great Hannibal Lecter'? What is WRONG with him?" There definitely IS something wrong with him. And there's something wrong with the Republican party, in thrall to him.

There are English words in what he said. But what he said doesn't seem like English, or not English as you and I know it. It's the speech of a demented man. If your elderly uncle talked in ways that are so adrift from standard English syntax, would your family be deeply concerned about him? Take him in for testing by a reputable doctor? Would you think "Hey, perfect material for the highest office in our land"? Well, neither do I.

Wyllow3 Sun 03-Nov-24 20:59:48

I looked it up - he's ben alluding to Hannibal Lecter on and off all summer (there are videos with it in August). Not sure why.

Iam64 Sun 03-Nov-24 21:06:04

Oh My - thanks MaizieD, I’d missed this. He’s so off the wall, scarily so. What on earth is wrong with senior Republicans not to call Trump out.
They were all over Biden for confusing words, clearly being unfit to stand. But that was ageing - this is ageing plus personality problems

Wyllow3 Sun 03-Nov-24 21:06:38

Today of talk about how "immigrants" are taking jobs away from African Americans and Latinos. Clear aim at his last minute target group - young men)

Rolling Stone magazine chart the beginning of the obsession

"July 2023: “That’s like ‘Silence of the Lambs’ stuff.”
Speaking at a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania on July 29, 2023, Trump alluded to the film that had introduced Lecter to millions of moviegoers.

“People are pouring across the border now, disease-ridden people,” he warned the crowd. “And I said it, I said it over and over: people from mental institutions, from insane asylums,” he claimed, falsely. “That’s like Silence of the Lambs stuff. But they’re coming in to our country.”

..."At the earlier event in Waterloo, Trump launched into his usual anti-immigration rhetoric and spoke about a supposed “invasion” at the border. “Think of it, the people coming in, think of it,” he said. “They’re from prisons and jails.” He went on to claim that migrants are “from mental institutions and insane asylums, noting that “an insane asylum is like Silence of the Lamb [sic] stuff.

"That’s serious stuff. That’s Hannibal Lecter. How good an actor was he? How good an actor was he? Did he play a good role, right? But insane asylums, they’re emptying them out.”

Its so offensive as well as complete nonsense.

Babs03 Sun 03-Nov-24 22:09:02

The question is, is he the one who is completely off his trolley here or his countless supporters at his rallies who listen to his off the wall ramblings?
I mean what do they take away from what he has said?
😟

Dickens Sun 03-Nov-24 22:25:15

He's illiterate, egotistic, emotionally immature - with a God-complex.

And he's a destructive force for the USA.

There must be sane Republicans - why aren't they calling him out? Why are they prepared to overlook his incoherent ramblings?

... that's the really frightening part.

Babs03 Sun 03-Nov-24 22:33:35

@Dickens I imagine the Republican Party must be prepared to wave goodbye to even a nodding acquaintance with being a credible political party in order to back someone who might get in the White House. In a nutshell they are as bad as Trump.

I think that Trump is deliberately inarticulate- it's the way in which the majority of his followers speak and so they think he is just like them.

As regards the polls, apparently the Republican pollsters are claiming large numbers in support of Trump so that when Harris wins, they can claim it was a fix.

The Republicans are still demanding the correct figures to be revealed concerning the last election. They just won't accept the info concerning the results.

I assume you mean people like Elon Musk who’s probably one of the smartest men on this planet and who I’m sure understands American politics far better than anyone on here. And as for not accepting the results of the elections you seem to be overlooking all Hilary Clinton’s claims about the election she lost.

Over 40 of his former advisers have called him out and pointed out how dangerous he could be if re-elected.

Hilary accepted the election results and the inauguration in 2016. Remember she got more actual votes but lost under the electoral college system.

In 2017 there was quite a lot of speculation about Russian influence in 2016 which Clinton demanded be examined. Came to nothing in the end. This is is an account of it.
It really doesn't not compare in anyway to what Trump was up to in 2020 and planning now.

Musk is undoubtedly smart with a very high IQ - he was already coding at age 12. I don't think anyone would question that. He is a genius.

But that doesn't mean that everything he turns his hand to is successful - Einstein, who had an even higher IQ, had his failures.

He's a also a human being, and like all human beings, is not infallible. And politics is politics; Musk might well know the detail of American politics, but that does not make him politically savvy - just because he's smart at what he does it doesn't mean he's a political expert. He's governed like most people by his ideology.

If he was a philanthropist and leaned leftwards towards social equality - would you still admire him so much? I think you like him because his world view chimes with yours, and you're using his unquestionable talent to make it appear that he must be right - because he's clever.

Einstein was also very very clever - but, he also had a dark side.

Babs03 Mon 04-Nov-24 07:31:17

Elon Musk could be a genius, but who cares, the man is an out and out racist and sexist who is backing another out and out racist and sexist for president.
Enoch Powell was a very intelligent man.
The thing is a human being needs more than just intelligence to be a positive force for good in society.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 04-Nov-24 09:04:24

The group who lead and took part in the January Insurrection are known as (amongst other things) as The Proud Boys. The colours they wear are yellow and black. Trumps mantra throughout this campaign is “fight, fight, fight”

There is evidence that this group is preparing for the result if Trump looses.

It is no coincidence that Trump has been wearing black and yellow.

Babs03 spot on about Elon Musk. He could be a convincing Bond villain

Whitewave and Dickens keep posting please. Trump is indeed dangerous

MaizieD Mon 04-Nov-24 09:29:02

I would propose that Harris is unfit to be President if she and the current administration had no plans and had made no preparation to counter any insurgency which will might arise should Trump lose. Not only that, but twitter is well aware of the legal shenanigans planned by the Republicans should Trump lose, so the Democrats must surely be equally aware and prepared?

Failure to prepare would look grossly incompetent to me.

David49 Mon 04-Nov-24 09:42:38

Musk is the richest person on the planet, his rockets are sent to the moon, he is a genius far in excess of any fictional Bond villain ever was.

I don’t know how many jobs he creates, he certainly uses his wealth creatively, love him or loathe him the US would be poorer without him.

I hadn’t thought about it before, but your Bond villain comment is spot on - I think the plastic surgery has made his face look a bit other worldly too, so he would be perfect.
