Users are falling though, according to the link I posted.

‘Data from Similarweb shows active daily users in the UK have dropped from 8mn a year ago to only around 5.6mn now, with more than a third of that fall coming since the summer riots. The same thing is happening elsewhere, and not just in places where the platform has been banned, such as Brazil. Over the same 16-month period, X’s active users in the US have fallen by about a fifth.”

That also aligns with X’s own reporting on its EU user base.

As part of its EU reporting obligations, X needs to provide regular updates on its EU user base, and how many active users it’s serving in the region. In its most recent report, covering the first six months of 2024, X reported a 5% decline in EU users.’

We will see, but if the fall in use continues of users’ own volition because people move on to new platforms, it won’t need to be controlled anyway.

A special relationship with 20% tariffs- estimated loss to UK about 22 billion in short term. Added to the many billions lost to EU exports, something like 33 billion since 2016. Those sums are humongous. Anyone who can just wave them away as inconsequetial for the UK, really need to seriously rethink.

The combination of both would seriously affect any country, even those with an excellent performing economy.

For an economy that has been so weakened by a combination of Covid, a Tory Government that bled it dry, and huge effect from a disastrous decision as Brexit has proven to be - this new set back with 20% tariffs is nothing short of diabolically bad.

Britain has been in decline as a world power since Suez and it is now seriously at risk of economic decline given Brexit and a more protectionist environment threatened by the US with counter protection from the EU and China. I doubt any British government's (Tory or Labour) ability to grow the economy and productivity so the tax take to fund the NHS and welfare state, defence, schools, etc. will fail to keep up with the costs.
