Shocking news this morning. On the tv and in the papers.

Apparently there are over one million migrants living here in the UK who have no right to be here.

600,000 of them are living in London. Just think about that huge number for a moment.

It equates to TEN football stadiums full to capacity in our capital city.

No wonder we’re broke. It’s dispiriting. Our borders are so leaky it’s not worth pretending any more that we have them.

What do you think about this newly released information?

Ah, Claremont, "spaffing" is a new word on me. I love it.

Barleyfields Fri 24-Jan-25 14:34:58

I wouldn’t use it if I were you. Said by Boris. Perhaps google its meaning …

No, it's horrible.

Just because Boris used it is no reason for us to copy him.

Even if you are a linguist, and 100% sure of meanings, including slang in English, I wouldn't advise trying to look cool by using such an expression. Luckily it was used in quotation marks on this thread.
Boris used the phrase entirely inappropriately because but he used it in the context of a discussion about the historical sexual abuse of children.

Allira Fri 24-Jan-25 15:04:55

Yes, I think Claremont used it as a quote, not her own words.

Using these around a phrase ^^ helps to denote it's a quote.

Update on the ICE immigration round ups in California. Yesterday a few migrants were detained. Today 75 per cent of the field workers failed to show. Result...the oranges are rotting under the strong sunshine, and fruit prices will now go up for ordinary Americans.
But hey, who needs immigrants?

Mmmmm sounds familiar?

It really is unbelievably short sighted..

It would be more practical to allow 6 months to get work visas for those already in the US and sponsored by their employers, pretty much as the UK does with legal migrants.

imaround Fri 24-Jan-25 15:49:22

Just wanted to give an update on how its going in the US as of yesterday.

Crops are rotting in fields in California and Texas. Eggs are $9 a dozen. Beef is getting harder to find because cows have been affected by bird flu. Within a month we are going to have a food crisis that will affect non-migrants amd migrants alike.

Citizens are being rounded up and their 4th amendment rights are being violated.

Women and children with brown skin being harassed at church food pantries and on busses. Anyone with brown skin is a target, legal or not.

Citizens are being advised to carry their passports at all times.

Wyllow3 Fri 24-Jan-25 15:52:21

Agree David.

Trump will have known this would happen - I don't think he cares creating such civil unrest, which we are going to see.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 24-Jan-25 15:53:20

Oh imaround, that is scary.

Crossed posts - if food prices rocket, will people still slavishly follow Trump?

imaround Fri 24-Jan-25 16:10:08

Based on what I have seen previously, they will find a way to blame the Democrats, not Trump.

But I am seeing supporters are already regretting their vote because so many are now without jobs due to his hiring freeze.

We are headed for a humanitarian crisis in this country. Unemployment is rising and he is just laying people off willy nilly. Homelessness is rising, food is starting to get more scarce and expensive. It is the exact opposite of what he promised.

Imaround, Vance, vice president, has a wife with brown skin as you call it, as do a proportion of congress so it is not about colour. It’s about numbers. Go in any city here and see first hand the problem, you wont hang around long, then make your judgement
.Awful that you have bird flue and the cost of eggs is high as a result of that, it happens everywhere though. Happened here and Mad Cow disease.

By releasing vigilantes and rioters from jail, Trump has ‘given permission’ to far right groups and individuals to victimise people in the groups he has said he wants removed from the USA. They are indiscriminate in their attacks, and innocent people who are US citizens will inevitably be killed. Having released the genie from the bottle, he is going to find it impossible to reinstate law and order.

Native Americans are being harassed in New Mexico and Arizona.

Usha Vance has been receiving racist hate online since summer.

It's not about numbers. It's about money. Those that have too much of it creaming from those who have none.

It's morally bankrupt.

America is screwed.

I remembered having recommended this novel in a previous thread. For once the search-box found the post. It was in an interesting thread started in September 2020 which is very relevant to this one. There are some perceptive posts in it – and the tone throughout is one of discussion, not confrontation. That is an illustration of the way confrontation has recently become the norm in discussions of serious subjects.

There were only 63 responses on that post compared to 250+ on this one so really it didn't take off, whether that's a positive or not I've no idea. Also isn't it forbidden to bring other posts into an existing one (I'm not sure?)

No, I don't think so if it's as a reference point.

A thread about a thread is against the rules, I think.

I thnk the subject is generating more interest than it did four or five years ago. We have all had a few more years exposure than we had then. I am glad that it is getting a good airing, even if it does reveal some xenophobic attitudes.

I’m not sure who is US based or UK, having been to the US recently, there are plenty of junkies and dossiers on the streets and there are city areas where you would not want to go at night, just like cities in the UK.

Racism exists of course from what I’ve seen it is less than the UK, the gulf is between the high and low income groups wether you are white, black or brown, for them life is tough as it is here.
One plus for the US birth right gets you nowhere you get promotion on merit

foxie48 Fri 24-Jan-25 19:48:19

Racism exists in the US and it is much more ingrained than in the UK. Slavery, the civil war and segregation has left it's mark. Is the US a meritocracy? To some extent it is but there is still a large percentage of people who never get on the ladder, let alone manage to climb it. What poor blacks and poor whites have in common is a very poor chance of joining the race, that's why the executive order by Trump to stop diversity programmes is so destructive. I am not surprised that the KKK is raising it's head in the South, it's never gone away.

David49 Fri 24-Jan-25 21:58:18

Racisms well ingrained in the UK, there are plenty that don’t get on the ladder here. In the US anyone who excels in whatever field can get sponsored, my wife’s nieces both have Black /Hispanic boyfriends everyone seems to be much more relaxed about it.

I do like visiting the US but wouldn’t want to live there, politics is so divisive and finding decent food to eat is a challenge

Elegran Sat 25-Jan-25 09:02:24

We can't all excell and be outstanding - many of us are the bedrock on which the outstanding stand, with their sponsors supporting them. Those who don't excel but are just mediumish and hardworking need a chance to get on in the world too. A country where only those whose heads (and wealth) are near the ceiling are thought to be an asset to the economy is a country where those at the bottom of the pyramid getting nothing are disheartened at being crushed, so they are likely to rebel and cause the whole structure and hierarchy to collapse.
