I have just listened to J D Vance’s speech in Munich today.

It was absolutely spot on, what a man!

Claremont whether or not you agree with FriedGreenTomatoes2 is irrelevant however, insulting a fellow GN member like you have in your post of 14.50.47 is totally unacceptable.

This is not an insult. This is how those comments make me feel.

Precisely.

GG yet it’s acceptable to insult those of us who support the current government by referring to us as ‘fools’?

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 15-Feb-25 15:44:09

"Draining the swamp"? What a horrible phrase.

Well, I will therefore change my post, and say that her comments made me feel sick.

Not sure who will be able to open the link (or will wish to do so or not). But is here George Montbiot (some of you heard him on Question Time this week)- explain how Trump and Vance are a sickingly worrying expression of a new world order, fascism by the billionaires and oligarchs, and how they use the prejudice and racism of populists to achieve their goal.

Comments such as “draining the swamp” and some others on here make me feel very sick too 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Frankly, I’d rather be a fool than speak about fellow human beings as “the enemy within”

Enough said!

I haven’t called any Labour supporters fools

I think that once anyone starts calling posters names and/or insulting them they have lost any argument/point they are endeavouring to make.

LizzieDrip Sat 15-Feb-25 15:56:30

GG I wasn’t referring to you - although I accept the lack of clarity, as my post was addressed to you.

Here’s the post I was referring to:

love0c, 9.27 today

“I sincerely hope the tide is turning. We have fools running the country and encouraging the fools in the country to carrying on voting for them.”

LizzieDrip Sat 15-Feb-25 16:01:03

Claremont thanks for the George Monbiot video👏

Now there’s a man who says it like it really is! We need more like him, who are brave enough to call out Trump and his oligarchs for what they truly are.

He's always a voice of reason.. I watched Question time and am grateful we have people like him and Caroline Lucas in the UK

George Monbiot? Such a twerp.

George Monbiot? Such a twerp.

I bet you were hanging onto every word uttered by the GB News panellist.

LizzieDrip Sat 15-Feb-25 16:17:43

George Monbiot:

“In 1995, Nelson Mandela presented him with a United Nations Global 500 Award for outstanding environmental achievement.[81]

He won the Sir Peter Kent award 1991 prize for his book Amazon Watershed.

In November 2007, his book Heat was awarded the Premio Mazotti, an Italian book prize.

In 2017, he was a recipient of the SEAL Environmental Journalism Award for his work at The Guardian.[82]

In 2022, Monbiot was awarded The Orwell Prize for Journalism.[83]”

Regardless of whether one agrees with him or not, dismissing him as ‘a twerp’ says far more about the poster than it does about Mr Monbiot.

AGAA4 Sat 15-Feb-25 16:25:42

The real twerp is Trump but that is being quite kind. There are far more descriptive words for him.

Casdon Sat 15-Feb-25 16:37:09

I didn’t know people still used the word twerp, I haven’t heard it for donkeys years. I’ve always thought of it as an affectionate term for somebody you know who does something a bit daft.

Now THIS is an insulting post if ever I saw one. He is probably one of the most intelligent person I (don't) know. But yes, I thought YOU might say that.

He is very clear that for this new world order to be able to work, they need to hoodwink and take with them a certain number of easily led fools. They spend huge amounts to achieve this.

I am sure some of Trump's supporters on here have such amazing achievement list, but are just too modest and discreet to boast about it.

Babs03 Sat 15-Feb-25 16:50:14

George Monbiot is a kind, courageous, and compassionate journalist/writer. Have been reading his pieces for many years. Not only does he care deeply about the environment he believes that all human lives should have the same currency and so rails against the injustices committed against those whose lives are considered cheap/disposable.
Trump probably wouldn’t give him the time of day which only serves to elevate Monbiot in my opinion, indeed the people Trump admires are all far right fascists/crooks.

I saw George Monbiot speak at our local theatre on the subject of loneliness. He kept the packed house entertained, moved and educated for nearly two hours. I was so impressed by his insight into the workings of the human mind and heart and also his ability to recall so many quotes, reports and data on such a difficult and emotive subject.

People might not agree with him, but he's no twerp.

I was lucky enough to do a week's retreat with him many years ago.. he is very compassionate and has a wealth of knowledge.. it was an ecological Buddhist retreat

Well apparently President Trump on Wednesday announced an order to open a detention centre at Guantanamo Bay to house up to 30,000 immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally.

FriedGreedTomatoes2

Do you know what will happen to them there? Will they be kept there indefinitely and in what conditions? I do hope they'll not be as bad as the overcrowding and parlous conditions in US jails.

The megaprison in El Salvador only holds about 15,000 prisoners. The photos from there remind me of the holocaust.
