I have just listened to J D Vance’s speech in Munich today.

It was absolutely spot on, what a man!

I actually agree pascal30.

Trump wants to turn his back on Europe - good riddance to him and his weird cronies.

Hopefully, European leaders step up, stand together and get rid of Trump’s influence in our affairs. In the long run, Europe will be better for it … and America will lose out.

In time, Trump may regret his isolationist stance because it will lead to his power on the world stage diminishing; and if there’s one thing Trump loves, it’s power!

But I isn't simply Trump. The turn towards the Pacific/China is a longstanding USA policy. Trump is restating it more directly than his predecessors and Europe should have acted far sooner.

Yes, in many ways it is much worse than 1933. The financial crisis allowed Hitler to demonise all Jews, and show them to be the cause of hardships for Germans.

But now, it is global, not local- and AI and Social Media have allowed billionaires and oligarchs to dominate the 'marketing', and target the most vulnerable. Same happened with Brexit. It is all so predictable now, and all the more scary.

They spent billions undermining Europe, bit by bit, country by country, starting with Brexit- Hungary, Italy, Germany, France even- because they knew they had to divide and rule.

At least Euroean countries have each other, despite all the above. The UK is standing very much alone, financially, industrially, commercially, farming, fisheries, and on, and on, and politically too.

My partner just said that Vance met with the leader of the far right in Germany, but not the Chancellor.

Yes huge breach of protocol.
Though as somebody said, Vance has done the impossible and united Europe.

Casdon Sat 15-Feb-25 18:13:28

It looks like the Christian Democrats are quite a way ahead of the AfD far right party, Vance is backing the wrong horse if the polls are right.

Vance? Isn't he the idiot who claimed that immigrants were eating people's pet cats?
Did he believe that, or is he just a liar?

I believe he is and then Trump repeated it if I recall. Sounds about on par with what I heard in his speech today. Rubbish.

The people sent to Gitmo have essentially disappeared. There is no outside contact, no legal representation, nothing. Just gone. Humans rights groups have already started the legal process to get access to the migrants to check to be sure they are being treated as they should be.

Yes, because he is alt right. Makes sense. Musk also spoke to the same political group by vid.
Perhaps when Trump visits the UK he will spend more time with Farage and Tice rather than Starmer.
Far right fascists prefer like minded people.

Those of you praising Vance might be interested in this piece that came out in October last year about this piece of work.

Nice. Eh?

Babs03 Sat 15-Feb-25 19:34:59

Antisemitism goes hand in hand with the alt right.
Hence the story in Utah of schools permitted to fly the nazi flag.
We can't just keep ignoring this because Trump or Vance say something we like the sound of.
Ignoring it means we are complicit.

Trump is a meglomaniac. Viance is scary.

Appalling, and yet there are those who think he’s ’more genuine and smarter than the whole UK government’
Odd point of view, perhaps.

Neither Farage or Tice are "far right fascists ".
Perhaps you should look up the meaning of fascists.
Starmer and crew showing more of fascism than any Government I have ever known.

That gave us a laugh anyway Freya5, and they are in short supply today. The new socialist fascists are everywhere I’m sure…..

Rula Sat 15-Feb-25 20:32:37

Nobody in Germany expects AfD to win. They don't expect to win either.

Pretty sure they'll come 2nd. But support for them is growing especially amongst the younger generations.

The world is changing. Politics is not as we used to know it.

So why do Farage and Tice align themselves with far right fascists?
Actually I only really need to use the word fascists, seeing as you don't actually have fascists on the left of the political spectrum, on the far left you can have totalitarianism but not facism.

The number of undocumented immigrants in the USA is 22% of all immigrants.

In the UK it's 7%...much lower in other EU countries.

Vance needs to look in his own back yard for 'unfettered' immigration.

AfD haven’t massively increased their vote share though. They got 14.8% of the vote in 2017, dropped by 2.2% in 2021, and are predicted to get 21.4% this time. So they will have increased their vote share by 6.6% compared with 2017. Is that a seismic change or a sign that people are disillusioned at the moment with the ruling party? I think we need to stay grounded in the facts here.

LizzieDrip Sat 15-Feb-25 21:00:05

Freya5 I really think you need to look up the definition of fascism!

How do you count undocumented immigrants?

Churchview Sat 15-Feb-25 21:19:58

I don't.
These people know the answer to your question though.

and

Babs03 Sat 15-Feb-25 21:26:39

Undocumented immigrants are counted by the authorities as they enter a country then detained pending their case being heard. This happens as Mexicans enter the US through border control and in the UK as immigrants enter either by boat or plane etc. Very few enter without being processed in some way, very few try to enter in the back of a truck or under a truck to avoid being processed, the majority want to be processed so they get a chance to stay legally.
But because they haven't applied for the necessary documentation to enter the country they are called undocumented.
