this continues an ongoing thread on Gaza

The O/P read (in part)

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the population of Gaza will be displaced to the south after his security cabinet approved an expanded military operation in the enclave that a minister described as a plan to “conquer” the territory.

The vote on Sunday came hours after the military said it would mobilize tens of thousands of reservists, strengthening its capacity to operate in the besieged Palestinian territory.

“One thing will be clear: there will be no in-and-out,” Netanyahu said in a Monday video message posted on X. “We’ll call up reserves to come, hold territory — we’re not going to enter and then exit the area, only to carry out raids afterward. That’s not the plan. The intention is the opposite.”

We now have the aid crisis at the focus of world wide attention.

11 other activists, including actor Liam Cunningham Who is he?
I'm perfectly aware of the war in Gaza and yes I've heard of Greta Thunberg but not this actor. Is he trying to help or raise awareness of himself? Are they going to request a meeting with the Israeli Government? What is their point?

Hamas and armed individuals will be at the heart of the shootings of people at food aid centres.

Hamas shot Palestinians rushing for food?

Wyllow3 Mon 02-Jun-25 15:18:50

Thunberg is a marmite figure, but its all about publicity specifically for letting aid in in a proper manner, and whether people condemn her or applaud her she is getting that publicity re aid needs.

Thats exactly what is happening on news outlets - (a quick google shows the hostile or praise) its all raising awareness of the humanitarian side.

Allira Mon 02-Jun-25 15:23:06

Surely officials in the UN, politicians etc are all working feverishly to find out ways of getting aid into Gaza safely?
This kind of stunt detracts from their efforts and could undermine them.

I'm not in favour of pop stars, film stars etc, jumping on bandwagons. It feels more like self-publicity.

Maremia Mon 02-Jun-25 15:29:27

No doubt thy are working as hard as they can, but sadly with very little success.
Gosh, in some of these posts, it's almost as if you hope her effort fails.
Hope she and the Crew stay safe.

Oreo Mon 02-Jun-25 15:29:28

That’s exactly what it is Allira
They want a battle with Israeli authorities to draw attention to themselves, it’s hardly a little known cause.
So it isn’t about getting aid in at all, they are a distraction and a nuisance.

Why wouldn’t they? More wonderful propaganda for them, but as well as hamas there are lots of armed men in Gaza who want to grab and sell on any aid they get.

Wyllow3 Mon 02-Jun-25 15:39:29

Even the IDF hasn't accused them of shooting civilians.

Oreo Mon 02-Jun-25 15:55:16

Why would it?
It likely doesn’t know who the culprits are.

Oreo Mon 02-Jun-25 15:56:07

Hamas have killed many Palestinians for varying reasons.

Wyllow3 Mon 02-Jun-25 16:07:53

The IDF has never been backward in identifying Hamas shooters if they believe them to be present. Their reports say "contributing to the chaos".

Anyway - overall what matters most is that it was clearly completely hamfisted attempt to deliver aid (and inadequate aid not just in numbers but what was handed out) by the joint Israeli/US GHF and has to be improved to work. There are still UN lorries waiting with much needed aid right now and enough need to be let through to prevent the total panic and chaos.

Anniebach Mon 02-Jun-25 16:19:15

Wonder how many UN aid workers are supporting Hamas now,
and perhaps not supporting but working

silverlining48 Mon 02-Jun-25 17:34:47

I think that the ver y limited ‘humanitarian’ aid provided by Israel ’ should be stopped because they should not be in control of what aid does or does not go into Gaza, because that allows them to give or not give and their record to now is not to give. Leopards and spots come to mind.

The UN has been there fir the civilian population for 75 years and has hundreds of trucks outside waiting to be delivered throughout Gaza, not just the one small area in the south which is where the Israelis want to push the Gazans into.

This is beyond outraeous and just disgusting Israeli propaganda of the very worst order.

What is the difference? Kill their babies, kill every child, he says. This is is the current mindset for many, not just him. As they know, that every survivor is a potential terrorist, because of the diabolical suffering they have been put through. So, where do we go from here?

Oreo Wed 04-Jun-25 09:43:38

Oh hiya Claremont you’re back again are you, was wondering where you’ve been.🤔

"*Gaza worse than hell on Earth*

Reports Mirjana Spoljaric, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

"She spoke about her grave concerns over the treatment of the Palestinians in Gaza, and appealed to world leaders to intervene - warning the consequences of the conflict could be felt around the globe if action is not taken"

Starmer has commented just now replying to a question on Gaza in the H of C, he said

"He says: "We have strongly opposed the expansion of military operations and settler violence, and the blocking of humanitarian aid."

He added that further actions against Israel will be considered, including sanctions.

Starmer continues: "We need to get back to a ceasefire.

We need the hostages who've been held for a very long time to be released and we desperately need more aid at speed and at volume into Gaza, because it's an appalling and intolerable situation."

Anniebach Wed 04-Jun-25 13:32:29

Was he replying to a question from Corbyn ?

Cronesrule Wed 04-Jun-25 13:42:44

So utterly upset, disgusted and angry with Israel over what is happening in Gaza. I suppose it is the current Israeli govt, not all of Israel. I asked myself, would we put up with this if it was our government? Then, of course, apart from a few pointless words, our govt is in effect supporting this genocide. No words and feel so helpless and ashamed.

Smileless2012 Wed 04-Jun-25 13:45:42

FGS it's time to stop considering what action should be taken and do something. Sanctions need to be implemented, as a country we already have blood on our hands for standing by and doing nothing.

Our government needs to 'grow a pair'.

Cronesrule Wed 04-Jun-25 14:22:29

Smileless2012 totally agree. The time for words is over. At the very least, require major sanctions now to express international condemnation and to leverage change.

Anniebach Wed 04-Jun-25 15:33:52

Free the hostages Hamas government
