Peter Mandelson - Epstein . Should Starmer sack him?

In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting sec from girls as yiung as 14. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison
Mandelson continued his friendship/business dealings with Epstein. The Telegraph reports when business secretary, Mandelson brokered a deal with Epstein after the conviction for child sex offences.
I heard PM today apologising, wishing he’d never met Epstein. He went on to apologise to the victims, he hadn’t noticed abuse of girls possibly because he’s gay and was there with his partner.
My view? How was he appointed? I knew about his links with Epstein which were always going to return to haunt him

Now he can retire into the company of all his other dodgy friends and spend more time with his family!

But what a flagrant example of Keir Stamer's cloth-eared incompetence that he was even considered for the post let alone given it.. Or perhaps Mandelson had something on Starmer, so that he had to make the offer.

Who are all his other dodgy friends ?

Mandelson was a skilled fixer for the wealthy elite. (MaizieD)

If that's how Trump saw him that would seem seem to add to those qualities I described as the ones I saw him as having.

I imagine Starmer brought Mandelson back because he was sleazy enough to appeal to Trump on whom the connection with old pal Epstein would work like an old boys club tie.
It was a reckless gamble that has cost Starmer dear.

Yep. Highly likely. You have to wonder just how widespread among the elites of both the US and the UK was Epstein's toxicity.

BabsO3 I suspect you’re not far from the truth. With Trump, a Machiavellian person, skilled manipulator and one who had moved in the Epstein sewer like Trump and other powerful men might have been considered. Pity the perceived risks weren’t considered to outweigh any positives.

Luckygirl3 Thu 11-Sept-25 13:58:22

I do hope this is the last we hear of this awful man and he is finally allowed to sink without trace.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:01:16

Mandelson’s goose is well and truly cooked now.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Luckygirl3 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:01:46

I can see that Starmer might have thought he would appeal to Trump, but really anyone who might appeal to Trump is not someone I would want to represent me or my country.

Iam64 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:01:59

In your dreams !uckygirl.
One of the most shocking thing he said recently is that as a gay man he didn’t realise what was happening.
Investigative journalists will be digging. I can’t see how anyone with such useless radar for abuse hasn’t missed it elsewhere

I’m curious to know what he meant when he wrote it wouldn’t happen in Britain. Does he mean Epstein would have got away with it here. If so, what a damning indictment of this country.

Iam64 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:11:05

Who knows what he meant. One thing that occurred to me was how right he was if he meant rarely were adult men prosecuted for ‘consensual ‘ sex with 14 year olds

woodenspoon Thu 11-Sept-25 14:17:53

Yes perhaps he meant that. Who knows.

Anniebach Thu 11-Sept-25 14:24:36

We now know what he said to Epstein, we do not know what Epstein said to him , rather like listening at the keyhole and hearing one side of a conversation

SillyNanny321 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:25:54

Yes oh yes nasty slimey man!

Mandelson has twice had to resign from government because of scandals affecting him personally. Now he has to resign from this job - because of a diodgy friends. Throughout the years there have been stories of mandelson having ddgy friends and accepting income in a way that is - just -, dort of the right side of legality.

This article was written 16 years ago after the Deripaska incodent that also involved Georg Osborne. There have been more similar occasions since. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2008/oct/26/party-funding-peter-mandelson-conservatives

Lesley60 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:58:04

I feel he should now lose his title I don’t want him being paid to sit in judgment about anything after he’s shown his true colours

TakeThat7 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:59:11

It seems right he's been sacked he clearly had poor judgement being a friend of Epstein .I don't understand why he's still being called Lord Do lords stay a lord whatever Surely he won't be continuing to be in the house of lords will he ?

Do name others in the Lords who you think should lose their title

FranP Thu 11-Sept-25 15:07:39

Done!

Should never have been given any post in the first place

woodenspoon Thu 11-Sept-25 15:14:07

Would he only stop sitting in the House of Lords if he’d committed a crime? As yet, there’s no saying that he has. Just shown poor judgement.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 11-Sept-25 15:14:28

His replacement, James Roscoe, seems to have an unblemished diplomatic record including close ties to the Royal family. Perfect fit. Why was he not ambassador in the first case? Starmer...that's why.

Spinnaker Thu 11-Sept-25 15:15:15

It beggars belief that Starmer was not fully aware of Mandelson’s background. Make no mistake that both MI5/6 will have had the absolute fullest information possible on both Mandelson and Epstein and it would be incredible that they didn’t make the UK PM aware of it before he appointed Mandelson. To now hide behind the statement that, since only yesterday, "more information has become available" is laughable. Starmer thought he could cover it up but watching how it was all panning out he’s had to be seen to do something. He’s a disgrace of the highest order.

I think he is only the temporary Ambassador at the moment according to the BBC news.

He was already in Washington in some capacity at our Embassy.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 11-Sept-25 15:19:15

Ah GG13 I see. ✔️

For someone supposedly a top flight KC, Starmer is remarkably gullible.
