Thoughts with all those affected. Quietly attending their place of worship for prayer and reflection on this, the holiest day in the calendar for the Jewish community.

Despicable and disgusting.

What are you saying now Oreo? Not understanding your question to PA and Wyllow.

What are you saying now Oreo? Not understanding your question to PA and Wyllow.

That’s fine, it wasn’t a question for you.

Maremia Sat 04-Oct-25 17:25:02

It's a public thread Oreo, so I don't accept your dismissal of my relevant question as 'it's not a question for you.'
In fact, reading it back, it appears quite rude. But that probably wasn't your intention.

Allira Sat 04-Oct-25 17:38:11

Goodness, no wonder Jewish posters leave threads and Gransnet.

Oreo Sat 04-Oct-25 17:46:37

If things don’t change they may even be leaving their own country.

Those leaving are not Jewish, well as far as I know. And one at least has been forced out.
And I only came on here to set this record straight because there has been too much nastiness and bullying going on. Not towards anyone Jewish. Which is why I have decided to leave and others have PMd me to say they have had enough.
So a small minority will be left with their own echo chamber.
You see the thing is Allira this cuts both ways, not that I expect you to believe that.
Anyway enough.
I’m done.

Off now to share Shabbat with some friends.

Of course you are.

😂
I get you.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Oct-25 18:23:07

StripeyGran one of our members, a Jewish lady living in Israel, has definitely stopped posting.

StripeyGran Sat 04-Oct-25 18:28:48

These things happen I guess?

I'd love to hear from a diverse range of people.

This sniping has been pretty grim on here today.

Babs, your posts are well-respected, by some of us at least, so it's a shame that you are considering leaving GN.

I was shocked at the accusations, and unpleasantness of the posts, accusing WW2 of not telling the truth that she is spending today with her Jewish friend. She also seemed upset to be accused of being anti-Semitic, when there has never been anything in her posts that suggests that she is.

If there are any anti-Semitic posts on GN then they should be reported, but these frequent insinuations that posters are anti-Semitic is insulting.

In the meantime, my thoughts are with the Jewish community after the attack two days ago.

Casdon Sat 04-Oct-25 18:33:40

People don’t post, whatever their own beliefs, when they see others have black and white views, and won’t entertain anybody who sees things differently. There is no topic at all on which there would be 100% consensus.

StripeyGran Sat 04-Oct-25 18:41:43

It's certainly not a " safe space" in which to try out ideas or thoughts or to express bewilderment and sadness.

Unfortunately.

silverlining48 Sat 04-Oct-25 18:48:04

Babs your posts are always informative and measured so I hope you will reconsider your decision to leave, or at least have a break and return refreshed. I will be sorry to see you go.

Whitewave I hope you have had a nice day with your friends.

ferry23 Sat 04-Oct-25 18:54:28

Unfortunately, we certainly have seen Jewish posters leaving Gransnet.

And even more unfortunately, it's no surprise they have done so.

Babs I have only come on here today to echo your comments.

I too have stopped posting for the very reasons you describe.

Like you Babs, I have enough self respect to remove myself from the nasty comments, snide remarks and veiled bullying.

The echo chamber members can enjoy patting themselves on the back and agreeing with each other. Good luck to them!

Wyllow3 Sat 04-Oct-25 18:59:29

I did of course report the possible spam last night out of concern for everyone here, since when I went into it by the second click my email had appeared, and of course it was for technical reasons.

It is troubling when your email appears inviting you to join such and such, isn't it, which is what happened. And has just happened again, although my mail was not open

The moderators said they were testing it out and decided it was benign.

But I think using this example to say, don't open any web references is a real shame, and possibly an excuse, as we often need to give back up and additional information for what we say, on all kinds of matters to read for further information, or back up to answer a statement that seems questionable.

I am dependent on the dieting and knee replacement threads for advice so can’t leave gransnet. But I agree about the news and politics threads given that two people that I know to be some of the nicest people anyone could ever wish to know have been banned from here recently which makes no sense to me.

Goodness, no wonder Jewish posters leave threads and Gransnet.

Telling a Jewish poster, being Jewish doesn't confer sainthood at birth shock What does that even mean?? whether said by Jew or Gentile there's a massive backhander in there somewhere, particularly given the nature of this thread which some may have forgotten is specifically about a Jewish community being targeted. No anti-semitism on GN. Good to know the prefects are in the room directing the narrative.

This is so sad that members are leaving.
I cannot believe all this hatred.

I can only think of the poor Jewish families scared to worship, to send their children to school, scared to walk around their neighbourhoods.

The OP clearly felt very moved on Thursday and felt she would have some solidarity on this forum.

A lot of these posts show a complete lack of emotional intelligence.

To be Jewish now must be so frightening, my husband has relations who left Nazi Germany in 1937 after hearing Hitler speak at a rally in Neurenberg.
Here we are 90 years later history repeating itself.

Will we never learn?

I've been wary since my FB account appeared when I opened a link but GNHQ assured me it was not visible to anyone else.

Galaxy Sat 04-Oct-25 19:20:58

Because of course others aren't in an echo chamber of their own.

foxie48 Sat 04-Oct-25 19:22:57

Such a shame as I try to always back up something I say, if it's factual, with a link. However, what I have learned is that many posters only want to attack posters "personally" rather than engage in the argument that they are making. tbh I'm not interested in reading petty attacks whether it's on me or another poster.
I listened to a Rabbi talking about this dreadful attack in Manchester on radio 4 5.00 o clock news about 17/18 minutes in. IMO it is well worth listening to. Like all the religious and community leaders that I have heard in the last couple of days, they are calling for unity and recognise that this attack is an attack on all of us. I am truly sick of the vile division in this country. We all share so much more than that which might divide us regardless of class, colour, creed or ability, that is what makes us British and it's a shame that so many don't seem to recognise that.

Galaxy Sat 04-Oct-25 19:28:27

I am not sure what I feel about this is an attack on all of us. I understand the thinking behind that, but I think describing what actually happened is very important. It was a targeted attack on Jews.
