Louvre closed after ‘masked thieves break into museum using chainsaw’ and steal ‘priceless’ jewellery.

Oooh dear, where was security?

And the French are worried about us looking after the precious Bayeux Tapestry!

Of course, it's more than just a robbery of some jewellery. It's a robbery of the history of France and all that that means.

It's very difficult for these places that house such precious items. The answer is probably more security staff, more alarm systems, etc. But all that comes at a cost, and France, like all other countries, is in huge financial difficulty. Where will the money come from?

I would have thought they would have been behind toughened glass which was impenetrable.

Whenever I read 'the French hate the English' I
do wonder how many French people you actually know.

I've lived here a long time and never met anyone who
openly is hostile to me or my nationality far from it
they are happy to know more of me and readily share
any holiday they have had in England

If knowledge of the French comes from the Daily Mail
then it should be taken with a pinch of salt, reality it
is not.

I have experienced anti-English prejudice in France and other people who wors welcoming.

Like all countries, some people are prejudiced, others not.

As I understand it they could have installed far more security cameras which would have show the thieves and made it easier to catch them later. Cameras cost money but surely not prohibitively expensive when needed to protect priceless items.

I wonder if the thieves have been watching Frauds!

Re cameras, what I don't understand is, surely there's cctv all over Paris, like London, so by now the police should have a picture where they took off to on their bikes? I'm not currently in France to keep up properly, but from where I stand, I can't see the French being very good at sharing every possible movement for information?

You’d think!

I blame Feathers McGraw.

Halfpint1...... I agree.
I've lived here for five plus years and never met anyone who
openly is hostile to me or my nationality ....

As far as the Heist is concerned I agree, Westendgirl, that this is the full Arsène Lupin for anyone who has seen the TV series.
All that we were missing was Feathers McGraw from the Wrong Trousers
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It is funny..... because of the ladder and the literal "daylight robbery". I couldn't believe that there were members of the public* actually in the exhibition room* while the robbery took place.
Also no-one was hurt thank god.
There is a serious point to be made about the harm to France's rich and fascinating heritage ( that overlaps a great deal with that of the UK.....only sayin'.....)
but that doesn't mean we can't laugh as well.

Their security was laughable that’s for sure.

Merci Labradora.
I always wonder whether these kind of threads will hit the right spot, because sometimes a certain sense of humour is needed!

I know about la patrimoine in France, having gone to school and university there, so I'm not making light of things! 🤣 Even my French friends think it's funny, and shocking! And yes, I pull their legs.

French people are OK, but they are a breed of their own. They're fine once they get to know you better, I find!

Update.

The whereabouts of the jewellery is still unknown.

Two men are in custody, they are sort of "known to the "police". Not charged yet.
The other men haven't been found.

Well, I guess that's a start!

The suspects, both in their 30s, were identified by traces of their DNA that were found at the museum, though the stolen jewellery has not yet been recovered, local media reported.

One of the suspects was arrested at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport Saturday night while attempting to board a flight following last week’s seven-minute heist.

The suspect was reportedly caught trying to board a flight to Algeria, Le Parisien reported, while the second was preparing to leave for Mali, according to Le Figaro.

Both of the suspects are originally from Seine-Saint-Denis, a suburb of Paris.

The pair are allegedly part of the masked gang of burglars who broke into the Louvre museum last Sunday before stealing £76m’s worth of jewellery.

The suspects were already known to police, who described them as “seasoned burglars”. They are now in the custody of the Banditry Repression Brigade in Paris’s 17th arrondissement, where they face questioning.

Oh dear, as seasoned burglars they weren't as clever as they thought, were they. Leaving DNA traces!

Already on the DNA Database then (presumably the French have one too).

Personally, I'd have been on a flight out last Sunday afternoon, giving the police a headache to catch up on my movements! (Seeing as their cctv was pretty ineffectual).

It's a shame the jewellery might be lost.

Beats the Sweeney hands down!

If you get a chance .........,
Cats Eyes is a good series on Tf1 French tv and centres around the efforts of the BRB to catch three sisters who burgle treasures in Paris. The detective in charge is dishy, and of course the love interest is that his ex is one of the cat burglars, but he doesn't know it yet! Good scenes around the Louvre and other sites.
