Surely there are better ways to spend council money.

Casdon Mon 27-Oct-25 14:20:51

Good grief NotSpaghetti. I would be very unhappy if I was an employee and my office window was blocked by a flag like it appears is the case on that building. It looks ridiculous.

MaizieD Mon 27-Oct-25 14:51:45

This was Reform’s own money according to a poster, should be easy enough to check.

The flags which are the subject of this thread are being funded by Notts CC money, not by Reform.

In the roads where there are few flying they have been positioned outside Asian owned shops Chinese and Indian restaurants

So no, they are not there just because there are lamp posts there. The few flags have been deliberately positioned.

Oreo Mon 27-Oct-25 16:40:41

Wow NotSpaghetti that’s a humdinger 😁

Maremia Mon 27-Oct-25 16:56:28

Did Reform make the original claim, that it was their own money spent on flags?

Maremia Mon 27-Oct-25 16:57:29

Deliberately positioned. That is intent. Do you really think the intent was 'welcome'?

^The divisive flags of hate are being bought out of Reforms coffers.^
I very much object to union flags being described as divisive flags of hate.
It is the National flag of the United Kingdom and should be treated with respect, whatever your political views.

I agree.

NotSpaghetti

Oreo

At least they were Union flags representing the UK.😃

Not this one on the council building

That has to be AI!!
I've never seen a flag that large.

Oh, wait a minute .....

Maremia Mon 27-Oct-25 17:08:50

Allira, are you agreeing that the flags have been bought out of Reform's coffers?
Just looking at your recent post.

Oh sorry, no.

It was this. It is sad if our Union flag is being used to promote divisiveness and we should reclaim it.

Allira Mon 27-Oct-25 17:14:06

Ps no idea what's in Reform coffers btw.

Casdon Mon 27-Oct-25 17:20:37

It definitely looks like the Council are paying for the flags, not Reform UK.

Thanks Allira. Yes, I agree, a national flag should not be used as a weapon.

Maremia Mon 27-Oct-25 17:22:23

What a waste of money!

Sigh.

As if Council money is not stretched enough as it is.
Stupid people.

Smileless2012 Mon 27-Oct-25 17:57:16

Who knew flags could be so expensive.

Lynnisa Mon 27-Oct-25 18:05:06

A great many more ways

The price arrived at is for flags, fixtures, fittings and installation (using a cherry picker in some cases).

The flags on lampposts round here have been taken down and replaced with massive poppies

HowVeryDareYou2 Mon 27-Oct-25 20:09:44

I live in Nottingham, and would rather see English or British flags than the Palestinian one.

NotSpaghetti That's the Council House in the city centre. It's Nottingham City Council that put that up. The Reform ones are Nottinghamshire County Council.

How many Palestinian flags are there in Nottingham?

Reform have just booted out Five Reform UK councillors in Kent. 'Bringing the party into disrepute"

Accusations of treachery, some booted out for criticising the leadership and others for appalling behaviour.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c867g72nzq4o

so much for "flagship" Kent.

Just keep on, Reform MP's and councillors - the more you trash your own party, the better, the truth about them will out.

A hastily thrown together party incapable of selecting people with integrity or experience, as per this thread's O/P, flags instead of social care.

😡 Pathetic.

Nice one. Much more appropriate. Pride and recognition of not only our wartime dead, but reminders of the need for peace in a troubled world - and living together peacefully whatever our original cultures or skin colour. I drove past an areas with giant poppies on lampposts reminding locals the road would be closed a little. That's community for you.

The flag shown is the England flag on the council building in Market Square. It is the largest England flag in the UK apparently and is only there for St George's Day and sporting fixtures.

I've no idea where Reform intend to put their flags.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 27-Oct-25 20:39:06

Thank you Millie22 for explaining about that huge flag of St George. And the reasoning (patriotism) behind it. And dialling down the rhetoric.

Thats missing the point. It's the cultural meanings of what the flags have come to represent, after far right quite violent marches where they march with them wrapped round themselves and their ideas claiming to be a true representation of Englishness.

Not my England, thank you very much. I believe in tolerance.
