The Army has sent in its bomb squad after several men were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences near an RAF base.

A major incident has been declared and residents have been evacuated from “a number” of homes in the Whelford area, near RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire.

Several men have been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act.

RAF Fairford hosts United States air force personnel and has been used to launch operations against Iran during the war in the Middle East.

Gloucestershire Police said the Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team were at the scene examining vehicles.

A police cordon is in place at the scene. Officers said the incident was “contained”.

Sounds dodgy to me. Why would you drive about a 200mile round trip to pinch diesel and park up just a few yards from an air base? Well dodgy.

Someone who wanted to impair the effective operation of the base? And make a few bob at the same time?

This just gets weirder, the Times is now reporting that one of the suspects phoned 999 to report himself.

25Avalon Tue 29-Sept-26 22:03:43

It now seems one of them dialed 999 and the extra figures the farmer saw were actually armed police rounding them up!!

How peculiar

The updated intel does nothing more than prove Trump was lying and Farage was scaremongering.

Iranians, like Russians, wanting to infiltrate our country, will and probably have, come here via legal means under some diplomatic guise.

Birth countries have plenty of contacts and plenty of money.

I have no doubt we have cells in this country that our intelligence services will be well aware of and watching.

What is it that you think extremely senior figures in our Home Office, Foreign Office, MOD, M15 etc etc actually do?

There are undoubtably criminal elements arriving in our country via irregular means too, but it’s extremely unlikely they are organised terrorists, however, of course, there could be lone criminals who could attempt to carry out terrorist acts, arriving via the boats.

Can you repeat that please?
I'm completely lost now!

Anyone?

These men sound very inept at whatever they were trying to do, if Iran or Russia masterminded it they picked a bunch without a brain cell rather than a cell of well trained terrorists, so it sounds highly unlikely.

Maybe it was some sort of test to see if the security was adequate which it proved not to be because they didn’t respond to the initial phone call. Very elaborate, though and why were they wearing masks ?

There are idiots that would do that as a prank, high on booze or weed, not caring if they get arrested or not, it's all a big laugh to them. Baiting the police has become a national sport.

There is no penalty that would deter them they already gave a police record, probably been in prison or youth custody, being arrested as terrorists carries a lot of kudos for them

Galaxy Wed 30-Sept-26 07:40:55

Sometimes at work we get emails sent as a test to check if we are alert to scams. Perhaps this is the same on a national scale. I suspect we have all failed grin

Oh and bythe way..I have no party to vote for. I have always been left wing but I am not going to vote for any party that swallows the progressive gender woo woo. My Labour MP Alex Sobel says he does not want bigots voting for him. He publicly defies and denies the Casey repot and condones transgender therapy for children as well as male self identified women be allowed in womens prisons, sports etc. He calls anyone disagreeing a bigot. I have for the first time in my life been disenfrancheised, as women always used used to be. And the deputy leader of the Green Party Mothin Ali is a local councillor whose wife appears in full niqab. I f you do not support this you are right wing...apparently. That goes much further than the old left used to. Even Mark Steel who was a Wolfie..in the SWP... is against this false belief.

You seem to be continually derailing this thread . Dragging your views on transgender and niqabs. This is just wrong and has nothing to do with the subject!

Sir Ken McCallum, the director-general of MI5, warned last year that more than 20 potentially lethal Iran-backed plots had been foiled over the past 12 months.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 30-Sept-26 07:59:02

The 999 call came from one of the perpetrators!

AGAA4 Wed 30-Sept-26 08:16:40

One of the men arrested phoned the police almost an hour before the farmer rang them.

It was the police wearing masks and as I said previously, account for the extra people that the farmer saw.

Retroladytyping Wed 30-Sept-26 08:49:47

The report that one of the masked men apparently dialled 999 makes me even surer that the whole thing was an exercise

MartavTaurus Wed 30-Sept-26 08:56:01

I guess a balaclava could be considered a type of mask?
Maybe it was a bit chilly at that time of the night?

Fallingstar Wed 30-Sept-26 09:05:04

If there was the least suspicion that these men were terrorists they would not be allowed out on bail. Whatever they were up to it was not any kind of terrorist plot.

I'm beginning to wonder! But why all the diesel?
And yes, why would you spend money going to a place much further away to steal diesel when there must be some nearer London?
Had anyone reported that their diesel had been stolen?

Were they wearing masks because they were concerned they might inhale diesel fumes?

They like to keep people guessing but the trouble is, more often than not, it backfires. They are too thick to have worked this out, sadly. They just love being ‘in the know ‘. Always was the case, always will be.
