So fun

I'm hearing this everywhere every day now. Just heard it on Steve Wright in the Afternoon.

Such as.....'It'll be so fun' 'This is meant to be so fun' etc., etc.

What happened to the word much?

I was online paying for my holiday this morning and the website asked for the "expiration date" of my credit card.

Whatever happened to the term "expiry date?".

I have visions of my poor card wheezing and going blue.

Most of my pet hates have already been mentioned but I also really dislike the use of" train station" "cupcakes" and what in the world is "pulled pork"?
Just a general thought, why can't we be proud to use our lovely language without having to pretend that we are American!!

Not certain if I'm on the right site but I am driving my son to get cross with me, but is he right ?

I was brought up to say Thank you when people did things for me and I still do it...Apparently he doesn't think I should be doing it all the time ...what do you think..It is VERY hard to break the habit of a lifetime

Ana Fri 17-Jul-15 18:11:26

Doesn't he thank people? confused

bimbadeen Fri 17-Jul-15 20:27:10

Yes he does but apparently I say it for irrelevant things..If he dries up or puts the rubbish bags out...ugh.

Ana Fri 17-Jul-15 20:56:17

Well, I think you should carry on saying thank you for the things you're grateful to him for doing. Our children do sometimes seem to get irritated with us for the most odd things...smile

Ana Fri 17-Jul-15 20:58:34

(should have been 'irritated by us' I think!)

NfkDumpling Fri 17-Jul-15 22:39:54

Saying thank you for little things is just good manners isn't it? Showing appreciation. He should be grateful that you notice.

Yes, irritating, 'fun' seems to have become an adjective.
Phoenix's landlord has the right idea.
'I'm good' - you may be but I was asking after your health!
First heard 'He's fit' in '79 in Cumbrian village pub, teenage girl referring to teenage boy. I tried to grasp what she was telling me he was fit for and incredulously she explained that she had looked upon him and found him goodly, or something similar!

I'm fed up with people, usually politicians and celebs, beginning replies to questions with, 'Look' or 'Listen'

I've just heard a jockey being interviewed on Channel 4 and he even said it in the middle of his sentences.

I would feel like shouting, 'I AM LISTENING.....DON'T BE SO B***DY RUDE' angry

formaq Sat 18-Jul-15 15:48:43

Current pet hates :- ' Revert back' - the 'back' is entirely superfluous.

People beginning sentences, usually in reply to an inquiry with, 'So.....' a recent affectation which I find teeth-grindingly annoying !

To be continued...

My late father used to hate the phrase "at this moment in time". What was wrong with "now"? I don't like "bored of". I always thought it was "bored with" and I definitely hate train station, particularly when it is on official signs!

JoniBGoode Sat 18-Jul-15 16:37:12

Q. "Would you like a biscuit?".
A. "No thanks, I'm good".

What does that even mean? Other irritations include "so" at the start of every sentence, "you guys" and "okay, cool".

Of course "cool" has been around since the 1950's as in "cool cat, man" but nowadays, like, as an adjective, it is like, well over used.

"To die for" is one of many pet hates. Can anything be that good?

mrsmopp Sun 19-Jul-15 19:57:33

Oh, that is gross, said my son. I am still trying to work out if he liked it.

I am a numb skull. I thought gross meant 144...

JoniBGoode Cool pre-dates the 1950s by at least two decades. It was certainly used as a term of approbation by jazz players and fans in the the 1930s.

MamaCaz Sun 19-Jul-15 22:34:16

I am irritated by "a small little ..." if it's said by someone who's paid to speak! Small and little mean exactly the same thing, so why the need for both? Strangely, though, I don't have a problem with "a tiny little ..." confused

CarolK5847 - what in the world is pulled pork?

A joint of pork is marinated overnight in a barbecue sauce, then cooked very slowly for a very long time - several hours. The result is pork that is so tender you can pull it apart with two forks. Once it's all pulled, you stir in the marinade and juices and leave to cool overnight in the fridge, where the flavours blend to perfection. Then reheat and serve the following day. Delicious!

feetlebaum Sun 19-Jul-15 23:31:06

Sort of "shredded"?

merlotgran Sun 19-Jul-15 23:39:28

Sorry....Can't take pulled pork or jerk chicken seriously grin
