Everyone knows about my JR Barney and how he came to us rescued from the dog pound 5+yrs ago we have just this morning found him in his basket and he had died in his sleep,we are so so upset but look back on his last years as a bonus to us and to him a most faithful friend one could ever wish to meet.

I am sorry to hear that - but it does sound as though it was a peaceful end.

I am so sorry to hear your news glammanana. We lost our dog over a year ago and we still get tearful from time to time. They are such a huge part of ones life it leaves a massive gap.
It must be some comfort that the end was peaceful and he ended his life in a good loving home.Love to you both.

Quite unusual for a dog to die so peacefully, which is good in some ways, but it must have been such a shockflowers. Break our hearts, don't they sad.

So sorry to hear about Barney glamma. My favourite vet would say that a dog who has had a healthy and happy life is often able to 'choose their time to go' and it seems as if Barney was able to do so in the comfort of his own bed. I'm sure this will be a comfort to you when the initial pain of losing him begins to subside.

So sorry to hear this glamma, I do believe there is something very special about the loving bond between a rescue dog and his or her family. I bet Barney knew he landed on his paws with you, and became one of the best companions you could ever have. It's so sad to lose him, but it must be a comfort to know he went to sleep, peacefully in his own bed. flowers

glammanana what sad news to wake up to and a shock for you, as others have said he will have passed away quietly in his sleep, but doesn't make it any easier.

Oh Glam I have just seen your post, so have come a bit late to this.
My heart goes out to you, I know well how you must be feeling having lost such a precious member of your family. You gave Barney a happy and loving home and if there is a dog heaven he will be there running free. Sharing your sadness today. flowers [[[[hugs]]]

I am sorry Glam, it's one of the hardest things one has to bear, and my heart goes out to you. As I've posted on another thread, my old Millie has been diagnosed with cancer in her lower jaw. Next week we will get the results of her biopsy, but it's not looking good. My main worry is to keep her out of pain, and to know when enough is enough. It's going to be a hard road and we shall need a lot of inner strength to get there and do it right.

Tegan Tue 04-Mar-14 17:18:11

Is it definately cancer? I'm only asking because my daughters cat had cancer of the jaw and we were all very down about it [I even bought a condolences card] then, when the biopsy results came back it was a abscess [the vet had been absolutely sure it was cancer].

nigglynellie Tue 04-Mar-14 17:41:52

Tegan, You have raised my hopes! Millie had a tooth removed about a year ago, and about two months ago a flat pink growth appeared in the 'hole'. One vet thought it was an infection caused by the top tooth fitting into the gap, if you see what I mean. Another is convinced that it is a cancer. Of course I fear the worse, but may be just maybe it's not as bad as I am fearing. We get the biopsy results any day now, + a more distinct view of the x ray, which was not very clear. Fingers crossed you are right!

Tegan Tue 04-Mar-14 18:06:52

Oh please don't raise your hopes. I had a dog diagnosed with liver cancer; I then took her to another vet for a second opinion and he said she just had hepatitis. Turned out that the first vet was right so I went through several weeks of, first of all thinking I would have had her put down and shouldn't have done, then anger with the second vet for raising my hopes only for them to be dashed again. I was in turmoil for weeks. Couldn't stop crying. Still can't believe my daughters cat is still alive though. He's really old. I think it was his age that made the vet so sure; the opposite happened with my dog with the second vet being convinced it wasn't cancer because she was so young [they'd both seen the blood test as well, but reached different conclusions]. Maybe Millie had a problem with the tooth because there was a tumour there?

nigglynellie Tue 04-Mar-14 18:07:47

I'm afraid my hopes have been dashed. Millie has osteosarcoma and the outlook is bleak. We have about 1 month with Millie. I can't write any more.

Oh no; virtual hug winging it's way to you. I hope it's a slight consolation that so many of us understand how you feel at this time flowers....

nigglynellie Tue 04-Mar-14 18:41:24

Thank you everyone your support is invaluable. Tegan, How awful for you, completely dreadful, I'm so sorry, but really glad about your daughter's cat.
