Yesterday Millie our 11 year old cocker spaniel was diagnosed with a malignant growth in her bottom jaw! As you can imagine OH and I are extremely upset at this very unwelcomed news. The vet seems to think that Millie has about 6 months left before things get too much for her. I was wondering if any one else has had this problem and how they coped with it.

Sunfowers, that is SO lovely, it bought tears to my eyes (again!) and thank you for sending it. Sentimental? maybe a bit, but I love it and shall copy it and it on my Millie file. Thankyou again.

How are you doing, nellie? Such a hard thing to do, and to be part of, and such a deep loss. flowers

I have to be honest I'm not doing awfully well, but the kindness on this thread has been overwhelming. Thank you all SO much. We are waiting for the vet (about midday). Millie has had a better morning than she has for ages, so that is good, I feel that I am about to murder her, but I have to be strong as I KNOW that any improvement can't last, and I would much rather her last morning was a happy one than one filled with pain and suffering. SO, on we go!

Agus Tue 11-Mar-14 10:22:00

Nellie. (((Hugs)))

Years ago I remember our old cocker, Scot, blind as a bat, deaf and completely senile, who hadn't wandered more than a few paces for weeks, trotted off in front of us when we took him for a final walk on his last visit to the vet (vet refused to come to the house). It was only a few steps but heartbreaking.
You are doing the right and only thing. (((Hugs))) for you both and Nellie.

NfkDumpling Tue 11-Mar-14 10:38:37

Ooooh, so sorry, thinking of Scot and not concentrating, I meant hugs to you both and Millie.

annodomini Tue 11-Mar-14 10:50:06

No, Nellie, it's not murder. You are doing this because you love her too much to let her suffer. x x x flowers

The vet will understand what you are going through this morning, nellie and if he thought for a moment that Millie was going to rise above this awful illness, he'd discuss it with you again. Allow the day to unfold, knowing you are all doing the best you can for her. Much love flowers

nigglynellie Tue 11-Mar-14 13:49:52

Well, Millie has gone. the vet came and was brilliant, so kind and caring. We have buried her in the garden and OH has planted some daffodils. I certainly shall miss that sweet little dog, BUT, when we were able to have proper look, that b l####y tumour was growing along her gum, and for certain it was going to be quite vile for her. Again thanks you to every one on this thread for your support and if any one ever wants any support from me - well I'm more than happy to help in any way I can.

nellie (((hugs))) and flowers. I'll bet a lot if us know how you probably feel. X

annodomini Tue 11-Mar-14 13:58:26

nellie, I know that feeling of grief mixed with relief. You will find one day that the happy memories will predominate. flowers

MrsM Tue 11-Mar-14 14:21:22

nellie - be good to yourself today; you have looked after your baby just as you should. Good that you saw the awful tumour and now realise that you have saved her from discomfort and pain (and loss of dignity - I think our pets deserve that as well). An awful day but you have done A GOOD THING x

more flowers?

nigglynellie...you have loved Millie to the last. She was a lucky wee dog, and as I've no words to comfort you...may I send you a virtual hug. sunshine

Deedaa Tue 11-Mar-14 14:32:12

Lovely that she had a happy last day. You would have regretted leaving it too long and it would have been horrible for her.
