My JRs love being bathed, blow dried, brushed but then they have to be kept indoors for a couple of hours or they'll just roll in something disgusting which somewhat spoils the effect.

I saw the dog on breakfast telly as well. It looked bored stiff and what was with all that 'sculpting?'

Love has nothing to do with humanising dogs (or cats come to that) and yes I m not saying this dog is abused in the usual sense of the word but all this dressing them up, getting them married, dying or sculpting hair ( I saw a cat with pierced ears) IS darned abuse

Unfortunately, it is another one of modern day excesses, there are now grooming competitions and fusion styles which have come in from the Far East. I trained in dog grooming nearly 50 years ago. I have two poodles, I do their full groom clip, bath etc every 4-5 weeks, now due to my aches and pain, bad back, knee and hands I do them one dog one day and the other the following day. When I was younger I used to do at least 4 - 5 poodles plus a couple of other breeds, hot, itchy work. My two have just been done this weekend, so are nice and cool again.

They get the ears cleaned, teeth cleaned and checked, nails cut and filed, feet and pads checked and flea treatment done at the same time. They like to watch each other being groomed and bathed just to check they get 5he same amount of attention from me!

I tend to think that treating pets as accessories is abuse..

I had a toy poodle once. He was a bonkers dog. He hated grooming time. He would hold one paw up out of the bath water, I expect he thought that by doing so, he wasn't all wet ?. He had very ticklish paws, and detested having his nails clipped. I couldn't do the grooming myself, so a professional lady came to the house, she gave him a "lamb clip", as he was never going to be a show dog. He was too tall!

My three dogs would be horrified at the thought of being dressed up, my Yorkie x has a coat but managed to wriggle out of it under barbed wire. I really hate to see these stupid dog weddings and other non canine events. Dogs should be allowed to be just that and not be extensions of their owners vanity.

Years ago we had a golden retriever, just like Monty Don's Nigel. What a lovely, intelligent, well behaved dog but.....he was such a tart! You only had to show him a brush for him to assume all sorts of 'Aren't I gorgeous?' poses and watching him hold his paws out to have his nails clipped would have us in stitches. Sadly, no smartphones in those days or he'd have been a YouTube sensation!

We used to have school parties visit the farm. DH would carve his initials on a potato and get one of the pupils to hide it. Justin, yes, that really was his name, would always find it and ponce around enjoying the applause.

He was trained to the gun but thought the Labradors were common and way beneath his superior skills so DH ended up having to withdraw him because during training he'd run in if a lab was making a big deal about finding a bird.

His ego was a force to be reckoned with

I have long haired, non shedding dogs that need regular pamper sessions - bathing, trimming, combing, brushing, blow drying. I mainly do it myself. They are always keen to jump in the bath and when I get brushes out they way their tails and look keen??

annodomini, I have the house to myself at 7.30 this evening. I shall sit on the sofa with my two dogs and watch the programme. One dog may need a word about not 'talking'to the dogs on the tv.

My two are at the groomer right now. They're poodle crosses, so their coats need a daily brush / comb by me and 6 weekly visits to the groomer. They do not have silly grooms - it'd be a waste of time and money any way because like any other dog, as soon as I take them out later, they'll find something to roll in, the smellier the better.

Dogs are dogs aren't they. They chase things, roll in things, eat anything you give them/they can nick and return your love one hundred fold. I don't like seeing them demeaned by wearing frocks.

Iam one of mine is a real Goggle Box! His favourite is Alan Davies in Dog Rescuers and Paul O’Grady at Battersea.

I have to confess mine are both sporting rather fancy bandanas today, but they are wet to keep them cool ?

Our Oscar isn't overly keen on being bathed so we tend to leave it to the groomer unless he's really mucky.
He does come home from the grooming parlour smelling really fragrant - for a short time.

When I was a teenager we had a Boxer who loved to be hoovered by my Mum with a hand-held vacuum cleaner. I think it had a massaging effect. Otherwise there isn't much you can do to tart up a Boxer!

Our Dalmatian used to tip toe though puddles and cower when I ran the tub for her bath when she was really stinky (all those dead things to roll in!) and a wipe down wouldn’t suffice.
I think that she would have thought I was cruel.
My friend has flash cards. She’s teaching her dog to read.??. Only short words though, is she bonkers or am I just a super sceptic?

Our dear border collie (no longer here ) had very long hair, especially at her back end including tail. We called it her skirt.
Usually we just tried to brush her regularly, but occasionally she had diarrhoeia. The only solution then was to trim off the back area. She hated it.

I washed my dog this morning, 2nd time in a year and I think that's overdoing it. Just doggie shampoo and a bucket outside. I have bathed and showered her in the past but its too stressful ( for her that it). Personally I think this is ridiculous. Dogs as fashion accessories, and I really do think it is unfair on the poor pooch.
