Morning all.

Clutching at straws here, but I have a very poorly cat and wondered if any of you have dealt with the same issue.

She has been retching/gagging since Sunday evening and until yesterday was also flicking her tongue in and out.

Monday we went to the vet and she had exploratories done.

Her gut was inflamed so they operated on her abdomen, but found nothing.

She came home last night and drank some water, but not eaten.

She's on two meds - one anti-inflammatory and Ranittidene (sp?) as she is full of wind.

She spends her time hiding quietly in a corner and wants to be on her own (very out of character, but understandable at the moment).

She is still doing mini-retches, almost like an unproductive burp.

I slept downstairs with her last night and she had a few little wanders around and then settled down again.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this or what else to do? The vet's on standby to readmit her, but he doesn't have a clue as to the cause.

Help please!

So sorry to read this Squiffy. Very best wishes to you and your puss and please don't abandon hope. If she was previously a fit and healthy cat, she may yet recover. Love and purrs from here.

Squiffy Tue 07-Aug-18 11:17:07

Thank you Scribbles

Well, she made it through the night. Breathing on her own, but still in O2 tent. Non-responsive, apart from blinking, so that's not good as it indicates possible brain damage due to being oxygen deprived when she stopped breathing during surgery.

She's on iv fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and being tube fed! Her poor little body sad

Hopefully, the nutrients will increase her strength enough to pull through.

I'm visiting her this afternoon, but only for about 5 minutes as she can't be out of her tent for long. I'll take her 'skateboard' * with me, just to see if there's any response at all.

* Her skateboard is an empty paper carrier bag that she pounces on and skates over the kitchen tiles! She also likes the challenge of trying to open it (it won't co-operate and keep still!) and hide inside it! She also loves the crackling noises it makes.

Where there's life there's hope Squiffy! What a fighter she is.

HildaW Tue 07-Aug-18 11:19:58

Oh Squiffy, your description of the skateboard is enough to bring us all to tears. Keep strong, sending you and puss all best wishes.

All our hopes are behind Little Miss Fighter. Love and hugs xxx

grandtanteJE65 Tue 07-Aug-18 14:56:16

Any news, Squiffy? I do so hope your dear little cat is doing better.

Jane10 Tue 07-Aug-18 14:57:27

I was just wondering about her too.

Squiffy Tue 07-Aug-18 15:24:04

Thank you all smile

Just back from Visiting Time.

Not getting carried away, but there is hope!

She was with me, out of the O2 tent, for about 20 minutes - the longest that she has managed without O2. The Vet was with us just to be on the safe side!

She is beginning to respond to stimuli - mini purrs when I stroked her and she closed her paw around my finger (a mini hand-hold smile)

I've seen all the Xrays and had everything explained. There is still lots of 'gunk' (technical term!), which is being removed by the nurses every few minutes so that it doesn't go into her airways.

Long way to go, but she's fighting like mad.

Jane10 Tue 07-Aug-18 15:27:17

Awww. What a wee sweetie. So nice she held your hand (in a small way). I bet she was pleased to see you.

Waterloosunset Tue 07-Aug-18 15:54:48

Thank you Squiffy for the update. So good you were able to stroke her and I love her cute response! Keep on keeping on little pussycat x

1974cookie Tue 07-Aug-18 17:14:11

We are all here rooting for your beloved Pusscat, Squiffy.
Love and hugs to both of you. ??? xx.

Squiffy Tue 07-Aug-18 18:44:28

Thank you Jane, Waterloo and cookie

I feel better just having seen her, which is silly I know, but I found it oddly comforting. She probably didn't even know that I was the one stroking her and not the nurses, but she may have recognised my voice (ever the optimist!).

Squiffy Tue 07-Aug-18 18:49:06

Grandtante I hope your cat makes a speedy recovery, too. Hopefully, the antibiotics will work their magic quickly!

Jane10 Tue 07-Aug-18 19:02:14

I'm sure she'll have recognised your voice. We once had a cat who never miouwed as soon as I walked in to the vets to collect him after a minor op he started to miouw loudly when he heard my voice.

1974cookie Tue 07-Aug-18 19:04:27

No Squiffy, it is not silly at all.
Your beloved Pusscat means the world to You.
Something that we all understand on this forum. My Partner and I have 3 pusscats that we absolutely adore, and would do anything to keep them safe, happy, and well.
Keep visiting your beloved Cat. You don't know for sure if she did not recognise your voice, or your touch, but please just keep going to see her.
She will recognise you, believe me xx

HildaW Tue 07-Aug-18 19:58:32

You are not silly - love comes in all shapes and sizes and boy do we need it nowadays! I often find our daft dog a lot of hard work....she demands that she joins us in the bed at night and we let her. Yes I know its bad practise but she had a horrid accident and was traumatised and would no longer settle at night downstairs. She's a daft rescue with issues and we know she was heading down the early 'euthanasia' route because she had not had the proper early training and socialising and just would not have been suitable for most homes.
She still brings us joy when we watch her at full pelt across a field or going daft over 'woozles' in the garden and she's been great just getting us out of the house for a good walk...so good for the troubled soul.
Wishing you all strength to cope and all the best to you both.X

Scribbles Tue 07-Aug-18 22:05:21

Not silly at all, Squiffy. You love her and she loves you in the ways a cat does and she will have known your voice, your touch and, above all, your scent. So glad you've had the opportunity for a visit; it will have done you both the world of good. Just keep on keeping on and look forward to the days when she'll be home again and twining around your feet - a way to go yet but with continuing care and lots of love, she'll make it. xx

phoenix Tue 07-Aug-18 22:40:13

Oh Squiffy you may have read some of my previous ramblings about my mogs, past and present, and from your post I can feel the love you have for yours!

They definitely claim a place in our hearts.

Sending absolutely every good wish to you and your girl,

With much love,

Phoenix

Squiffy Wed 08-Aug-18 11:25:23

Thanks phoenix. Indeed, I remember your cats' adventures well!

Squiffy Wed 08-Aug-18 11:27:36

Update

She got through the night without needing any O2! Absolutely amazing!

Still a long way to go, but they are increasing her food (still through a tube) today.

I'm visiting again this afternoon.

Thanks all of you smile

Waterloosunset Wed 08-Aug-18 11:46:17

Wow come on, come on! I love her spirit - give her an extra cuddle from me. Lots of love to you both xxx

HildaW Wed 08-Aug-18 14:00:00

Wonderful...what a fighter!

Jane10 Wed 08-Aug-18 14:02:25

Hooray! Sounds like she's pulling through!

Squiffy Wed 08-Aug-18 16:24:38

Just back from visiting. Not looking so good today, no response.

I'm hoping that this is just due to the effort of breathing on her own, plus having to cope with extra digestive activity, not to mention dealing with all the drugs.

The Vet is going to ring me later, as she was in surgery when I was there.

Scribbles Wed 08-Aug-18 17:10:07

Poor little cat! She's having to cope with such a lot but, if get-well wishes can help at all, then she has a lot on her side.
