Dr. Laura Slessinger is a well-known conservative talk show host. She has expressed very negative beliefs about homosexuality.

She has firmly supported and advocated biblical morality on her TV and radio shows. The following is a tongue-in-cheek letter seeking Dr. Laura's advice on applying biblical morality and religious duties in today's world. Its author is unknown.

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When people try to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them:

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev.1:9).The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7.In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness (Lev.15:19-24).The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

d) Lev.25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev.11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev.11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread cotton/polyester blend. He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev.24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you.

That's the trouble with Methodism today, I fear, as we say in Scotland, "they're all out of step except puir wee Jock"

soontobe Mon 07-Sept-15 20:19:05

No Anniebach. I have been a Christian for about 22 years.

Alea Mon 07-Sept-15 20:23:08

You are joking right?

The President is only in the job for a year, so just about impossible to remember the two names each and every year

Two names, one year? Hardly rocket science!

As for knowing your (yes your ) Church's Conference Vice President, it took me all of 90 seconds. Do you really take so little interest in the Methodist Conference?

Anniebach Mon 07-Sept-15 20:31:42

Thank you soon,

soontobe Mon 07-Sept-15 20:34:33

Well yes, Alea.

We also have something come around called Buzzfeed I think, and I dont look at that much either.
It certainly is true of those in my chapel, and a lot of others, that we tend to work a lot more to do with people at local level. There are plenty of them outside our doors.

I perhaps should be more interested in higher up stuff, but even my fellow stewards etc are not where I am.

I am probably a disappointment to you in that respect. But I suspect I already am anyway grin so it wont matter in the slightest.

Anyone else feel we are going way off topic here?

Time for me to finish for now I think. moon

Luckygirl Mon 07-Sept-15 20:52:14

The sad thing about your brand of religion soon is that is is so unthinking and so very harsh.

Luckygirl Mon 07-Sept-15 20:52:39

Give me Annie's approach any day. smile

absent Mon 07-Sept-15 20:54:40

Anyone else feel we are going way off topic here?

hmm

Anniebach Mon 07-Sept-15 21:07:54

soon, as one Christian to another may I ask , do you believe the Jews are Gods chosen people and Christ was a prophet , not the son of God? and do you share my belief that many humanitarians are more Christlike in their life choices than many Christians ?

durhamjen Mon 07-Sept-15 21:28:43

What about self-styled humanitarians?

Luckygirl Mon 07-Sept-15 21:38:41

I am not sure it is off topic absent - fundamentalism is a barrier to tolerance.

durhamjen Mon 07-Sept-15 21:41:46

Absent was quoting soon, Lucky.

Anniebach Mon 07-Sept-15 21:45:37

Jen, anyone who tries to live their lives as Christ asked is Christlike in my opinion, I don't mean they are intentionally following his teachings , they do do because it's their choice , Gandhi was Christlike , Dr King was a Christian , both were good men , I believe God looks within our hearts and isn't concerned with what we choose to call ourselves . I should add my priest - a dear friend of forty years - at times asks me if I attend a church of one !

Luckygirl Mon 07-Sept-15 22:21:05

Sorry absent - missed that one.

Luckygirl Mon 07-Sept-15 22:23:23

Sounds like a good church Annie!

One of the reasons that I shun organisations, political or religious (in my case humanist) is because it is impossible to subscribe to all their tenets without disengaging my brain.

Anniebach Mon 07-Sept-15 22:41:34

Luckygirl, I am a member of the worldwide Anglican Church , I love sharing the fellowship with other members , I attend mass and occasionally confession, I also refuse to follow blindly and say so . I said ,I think at the start of this thread , I ask myself what would Jesus do, I don't know what he would do but I read his teachings and read of love, forgiveness , tolerance, and base my decisions and life on these , I fail but know I must keep trying even though I keep failing.

Lilygran Mon 07-Sept-15 22:48:01

Anniebach flowers

soontobe Mon 07-Sept-15 23:22:51

Gransnet have said they will look into it all further tomorrow.

Jews are God's chosen people.

Christ is the Son of God

I dont understand the end of your post of 21.07pm enough to answer the question. Presumably some of the humanitarians are Christians and some are not?

Joan Tue 08-Sept-15 00:39:49

I just watched an old interview where Michael Parkinson was interviewed by Gay Byrne. He was asked if he believed in Christ. Parkie said something like he was sure Jesus Christ existed, and he was a great Trade Union leader, galvanising to people to fight for a fairer world, and reject old outdated ideas. He rejected the idea there was something supernatural about him.

I'm with Parkie!!! Especially as I was a trade union leader once too.....

soontobe Tue 08-Sept-15 00:49:51

I think it is about time a thread was started about the Good News of Jesus Christ.
I think gransnetters may have had enough of the rules side of it.

Perhaps Anniebach would like to start it?

soontobe Tue 08-Sept-15 00:52:55

Now might not be the right time. Not sure.

Joan smile

Luckygirl Tue 08-Sept-15 01:37:50

Anniebach - love your last post. Love, forgiveness and tolerance - that should do the job! smile

soon - I think Annie has just rather neatly summed up the good news in 3 words, so do not feel obliged to start a thread.

soontobe Tue 08-Sept-15 08:39:01

ok smile

But I will add a few more.
He sets us free from our sins. He is our defender, shield, strength, guide, hope, light, salvation and helper and comforter too.

feetlebaum Tue 08-Sept-15 09:08:22

Since 'sins' are only offences against religious laws and rulings, many of us are already free of them! So where do you stand on that most pernicious of doctrines - Original Sin?

soontobe Tue 08-Sept-15 09:24:35

I had to look up what original sin meant.
Um. I still dont know how to answer, as I dont really know what you are asking me. Sorry.

I take it that your first sentence is tongue in cheek?!
