Fed up hearing about the Pope dying.

Reporting on the slow demise of Pope Francis is irritating, especially as it has been going on for a while now. I don't want to hear every morning over breakfast about his night's sleep and his condition. Whether he has kidney failure, organ shutdown, asthma, pneumonia, nor what medical treatment he is being given.
Maybe it's just me?

NotSpaghetti Mon 24-Feb-25 10:06:32

He specifically asked that the details of his condition be told openly.
He seems to want transparency here.

I'd rather know about the Pope than some footballer to be honest.

I don't find the info too bothersome.

What an unpleasant post, Escaped.
The Pope's possible demise is of great concern to millions of Catholics; even me, as a non-Catholic. I am interested to know how his health is as his death will have world-wide implications. The report takes only a few minutes, and to some he is a world leader, whatever you think of his religion.

I’m not religious but I like this Pope, I think he’s a good man and an improvement on various of his predecessors. I shall be sorry when he goes. I welcome the updates, I don’t think the BBC is overdoing it, unlike a lot of other things they over-hype.

I'm not Catholic, but am interested to know how the Pope is doing. He is a significant leader to millions of people, I think therefore his health is of great importance.

Some people don`t like to hear about the end of life but the reality is that dying is part of living and is all too often not spoken about today.

pascal30 Mon 24-Feb-25 10:39:20

I'm not a catholic but respect believer's wishes to follow his progress whilst in hospital.. I listen and wish him well..

I find all the ceremonies quite fascinating and especially the one where they show smoke to announce a new pope.. which hopefully won't be soon..

rafichagran Mon 24-Feb-25 10:47:40

He is very important to the Catholics, so no I am not irritated.

LaCrepescule Mon 24-Feb-25 10:52:11

Yes, most likely it is just you. Don’t you have anything more important to wind you up? Just don’t read the news about the Pope if it irritates you so much. He’s an important figure to the huge number of Catholics worldwide and there are plenty in the UK who give a damn.

We are all entitled to our opinions and interests. If you really dislike listening to it, then the off button is there I presume.? Personally hearing the words Donald Trump immediately annoys me, whatever it is about it will be totally the world according to DT and what he can get away with. Nor am I interested in the goings on of supposed celebrities, so they are the words that send me off to wash up or do whatever job is waiting for me or to just ignore it for a few minutes. The pope is of major importance to many people in the world and a great deal more relevant than what some footballer did in a nightclub. Just ignore what you dont want to hear and put your mind to something else. No preblem.

I find the daily bulletins distressing. I’m not a Catholic but the monitoring of a dying man seems a tad macabre to me. However maybe Catholics feel they are keeping vigil?

I agree.

Me too.

Allira Mon 24-Feb-25 10:58:56

I do hope they are trying to let him go gently into the next world if his time is near and not fighting to keep him alive at all costs.

Pneumonia is not known as the friend of old people for nothing.

Smileless2012 Mon 24-Feb-25 11:05:07

I keep worrying about that too Allira.

theworriedwell Mon 24-Feb-25 11:19:54

I don't think pneumonia is a nice way to die. I'm just recovering from it and clearly wasn't as ill as the Pope. It certainly isn't something I'd choose. I never understood why it was referred to that way, there are easier ways to die.

BigBertha1 Mon 24-Feb-25 11:22:39

escaped well its not me. If the Pope dies its a world event, important to millions. Of course I want to hear about it and wish him well. I'm not at all religious.

BlueBelle Mon 24-Feb-25 11:43:00

I m not really very interested in the Pope he s just another ill elderly man but he is famous worldwide so yes there will be plenty of bulletins I m sure he’s getting the very best of treatments and will be kept peaceful and pain free He has a large following so it’s to be expected but you don’t have to listen escaped

Yes I too blank out when certain things that don’t interest me come on news programmes (including the obvious trumpetey trump)

Thank you karmalady I think you have explained my thoughts.
I am neither unpleasant nor harsh, and I don’t mean to upset anyone on here. I only listen to the news once an hour on ClassicFM. Yesterday was a long drive in the car, and reporting the minute details of Pope Francis' illness was first up every time. I don't like the macabre feelings it gives me drip by drip.
As the title of this forum is also spirituality, I guess my preference is to feel a sense of peace, especially when things are tough. For me, in this instance I feel troubled aggravated?. That's not to say I am not interested or don't care.

Aveline Mon 24-Feb-25 11:50:06

I'm not a Catholic or interested in the Pope, but as a human being. The poor old thing. I wish they'd just let him slip away/ let nature take it's course.

It is a strange fact that those who are very close to God can actually take longer to die because they are in a more peaceful state going to meet their maker. I don't think they are fighting to keep him alive.

Aveline Mon 24-Feb-25 11:51:15

It looks like they're throwing everything at him!

escaped Mon 24-Feb-25 11:54:53

He has asked for openness about his condition.
Now that would be interesting to hear about, what were his requests, and why?
Anyone?

Babs03 Mon 24-Feb-25 11:55:28

I just tend to pay attention to news that I am interested in, am aware that the Pope is ill but have obvs missed all the other updates.
I think most of us can dip in and out of the news like this. These days it seems to be a necessity.

Mollygo Mon 24-Feb-25 12:52:53

I would prefer to hear about the Pope than about many things that are on the news. If he’s dying, as it seems likely those interested would like to be kept in the loop.

This. I'm not a Catholic and I don't agree with many things about the Catholic Church, but I do have respect for this Pope.

knspol Mon 24-Feb-25 13:15:26

Not a catholic but it's surely of interest when someone in his position is so ill. Haven't heard that many updates I think the news has been all about Ukraine/Trump and Putin and rightly so or else Israel/Palestine.

Eloethan Mon 24-Feb-25 13:29:01

I am not at all religious but, like friedgreentomatoes, I find these constant bulletins quite voyeuristic and disrespectful.
