Fed up hearing about the Pope dying.

Reporting on the slow demise of Pope Francis is irritating, especially as it has been going on for a while now. I don't want to hear every morning over breakfast about his night's sleep and his condition. Whether he has kidney failure, organ shutdown, asthma, pneumonia, nor what medical treatment he is being given.
Maybe it's just me?

He specifically asked that the details of his condition be told openly.
He seems to want transparency here.

I'd rather know about the Pope than some footballer to be honest.

I don't find the info too bothersome.

We're Catholic, concerned to his health, praying a peaceful death.

I am not at all religious but, like friedgreentomatoes, I find these constant bulletins quite voyeuristic and disrespectful.

But if he has asked that people are updated, then surely that makes it not disrespectful, doesn't it?

I don't think pneumonia is a nice way to die. I'm just recovering from it and clearly wasn't as ill as the Pope. It certainly isn't something I'd choose. I never understood why it was referred to that way, there are easier ways to die.

Everyone's experiences are different, I suppose. Having sat with people at the end of their lives, pneumonia was definitely a gentler way to go.

I imagine that his faith would lead him to think that we might be accepting of, and comfortable with, his passing from this world, a journey we must all make in our time.
Having just seen the film Conclave, I am more aware of the traditions around this time.

Chardy Mon 24-Feb-25 16:22:27

Not a Catholic, but as he seems to be one of the few criticising the aggressors in Palestine and Ukraine, I'm hoping he makes a full recovery soonest - he sounds like a good guy

I am a Catholic and I am interested in what is happening in Rome

So am I. I was raised a Catholic but I’m not a practicing one. Once a Catholic always a Catholic, isn’t that what they say.

I would be interested in hearing what kind of night the Pope has had and if he’s in a stable condition. I don’t think it’s necessary to hear how he is 9/10 or more times a day.

I agree that it’s all a bit too intrusive and that we don’t need to know every little detail. 🙏🏻.🙏🏻

MayBee70 Mon 24-Feb-25 17:05:51

I was reading any updates last week as my daughter took her family to Rome last week to visit the Sistine Chapel etc and I kept wondering what would happen if he died while they were there.

eazybee Mon 24-Feb-25 17:11:30

You will be pleased to know he has recovered from the complications yesterday and is eating a normal meal.

Wait ‘till the conclave starts 😱

Bellasnana Mon 24-Feb-25 18:18:41

I rarely watch the news but I am interested to hear bulletins on the health of the Holy Father.

If you are ‘fed up’ of hearing about it don’t watch it.

Rula Mon 24-Feb-25 18:22:13

He's working now.

RosieandherMaw Mon 24-Feb-25 18:24:54

Somewhat taken aback by OP- we have always had bulletins about the health of other national and international figures and nobody would deny the Pope's sgnificance as spiritual leader of I don't know how many millions, whatever their own religious persuasion.

rafichagran Mon 24-Feb-25 18:35:15

I think the title is a bit blasé but I don't think the OP meant it to be.
I agree the Pope us a spiritual leader to millions and alot of people will want updates as it means alot to them.

Some people don`t like to hear about the end of life but the reality is that dying is part of living and is all too often not spoken about today.

Thank you karmalady I think you have explained my thoughts.
I am neither unpleasant nor harsh, and I don’t mean to upset anyone on here. I only listen to the news once an hour on ClassicFM. Yesterday was a long drive in the car, and reporting the minute details of Pope Francis' illness was first up every time. I don't like the macabre feelings it gives me drip by drip.
As the title of this forum is also spirituality, I guess my preference is to feel a sense of peace, especially when things are tough. For me, in this instance I feel troubled aggravated?. That's not to say I am not interested or don't care.

You have mis-interpreted my post. I was trying to say that the Pope is allowing people to share his death experience. Not many people talk about death but to many of us, me included, it is a deeply religious experience.

You have upset people and I too think that your post was harsh and unnecessary

The pope is our father on earth, our link to God. Dying is not easy and the pope is allowing us to join with him on his journey and in doing so, he gives us something of himself and the hope of eternal life

Shame on you escaped! I am a Catholic and am feeling very sad that Pope Francis is deteriorating in health, most Catholics like myself are just praying for him at this time. The updates on his health keep me up to date on what is happening.

Maremia Mon 24-Feb-25 19:20:09

And now you have almost 3 GN pages to read.

Sago Mon 24-Feb-25 19:20:22

I have been a big fan of Pope Francis, I have not agreed with everything he has preached but he has been a good and popular Pope.

He is the first ever Jesuit Pope.

I am sad and welcome updates.

theworriedwell Mon 24-Feb-25 19:47:04

Allira I did some research. The saying comes from a doctor who acknowledged it was a painful and often agonising death but it was quick and as people often got it when they were suffering from something that was a slow death it meant they died quicker. This was obviously back when pain relief and sedation for the dying wasn't a thing.

I can confirm that it is, well it was for me, very painful and unpleasant as you are fighting for every breath.

Allira Mon 24-Feb-25 19:50:51

Not all it is portrayed as, then. ☹

I’d like to know all the easier ways to die?

Oreo Mon 24-Feb-25 22:01:49

I’m not really interested in hearing bulletins about the Pope either but accept that many, Catholics in particular are.
It’s the way things are now with anyone of importance in the world that tv and radio constantly repeat news about them on the hour every hour.
We don’t all have to like it tho.

Oreo Mon 24-Feb-25 22:04:34

I don’t think the OP deserves all the name calling for not liking it either.

theworriedwell Mon 24-Feb-25 23:05:11

I think dying in your sleep sounds peaceful. Of course with modern painkillers and sedatives it is probably easier in lots of cases. Imagine infections when there were no antibiotics, can't have been easy.

escaped Mon 24-Feb-25 23:49:59

Just to set the record straight, I have said nothing disrespectful or unpleasant about Pope Francis himself. For what it's worth I think he has actually been a good Pope.

Neither did the thread today set out to criticise anyone on here, Catholic or otherwise, for wanting to hear the intricate details of his final journey.

My problem was with the broadcasting of every medical piece of information around the clock over the past few days. I don't like it, I find it disturbing for want of a better word, that modern journalism wants to know painful details about a dying person's condition. Lengthy bulletins dissecting everything seem unnecessary. That's how I feel, though I do understand it is a delicate balance. I apologise if I worded the OP clumsily, but several posters obviously understood what I meant. Maybe it would have been better to discuss under a heading other than religion.

And to be fair, I would feel exactly the same way whichever important figure were being discussed in this manner at this particular time.

NotSpaghetti Tue 25-Feb-25 00:03:29

I haven't heard a single Lengthy bulletin dissecting everything - I've only heard fairly "ordinary" reports. I'm obviously not listening to whatever you are listening to, escaped
