Fed up hearing about the Pope dying.

Reporting on the slow demise of Pope Francis is irritating, especially as it has been going on for a while now. I don't want to hear every morning over breakfast about his night's sleep and his condition. Whether he has kidney failure, organ shutdown, asthma, pneumonia, nor what medical treatment he is being given.
Maybe it's just me?

Lengthy because they repeatedly go back over the past 10 days, NotSpahetti wanting fill out air time on the matter and discuss it, Sky certainly.

eazybee Tue 25-Feb-25 07:20:15

Pope Francis remained in a critical condition yesterday but was showing signs of a 'slight improvement', the Vatican said.

As a RC I am finding them irritating but the media have been encouraged to do this by the HF himself. He knows how rumour and speculation spreads so I understand the coverage.

There is so much going on at the moment I find it quite encouraging that it is being brought into prominence.

Also, I and others are reminded to pray for him and the church and to keep him in our thoughts, which is a good thing. There was a thread asking people to do that very thing for someone else on GN last night, and what a positive response that had, too.

As for the film Conclave I haven't seen it but would remind people it is a work of fiction.

Maybe Sky is the outlier then?
I've listened to mainly radio 3, 4 and LBC over the last few days I'd say - and the TV isn't on until evening so I'm not aware of reports there.

The Pope has been mentioned in the radio briefings- but hardly excessive.

I'm sure you are hearing "too much information" though escaped or you wouldn't have posted here.

I haven't heard a single Lengthy bulletin dissecting everything - I've only heard fairly "ordinary" reports. I'm obviously not listening to whatever you are listening to, escaped

Yes, it has been. DH mentioned it because there are lengthy very explanatory reports on the Breakfast News and other rolling news programmes, which I don't watch.

ReadyMeals Tue 25-Feb-25 13:15:59

But you wanted to spend time making a thread about it? There are probably more people in the world for whom the Pope is one of the most important people in their lives than there are who were interested in following the news of the late Queen whose funeral arrangements filled our media for weeks, and the new King's accession. Not Roman Catholic myself but will be empathising with those who are if things take a turn for the worse.

I agree with this. There has been relatively little on the BBC News app. I am Catholic but have never been Pope Francis’ biggest fan. However he is our father and he has asked for the details of his illness to be made known to us and to the world in general. I’m grateful for all the positive comments on this thread.

If millions of people are praying for the Pope and there is power in prayer then he should be O.K. shouldn’t he ?

Yes.

As Catholics our prayers are for the Pope to pass peacefully.

Passing on to Heaven is more than ok, it's wonderful.

As a Christian Anglican I pray for him

AGAA4 Tue 25-Feb-25 14:10:24

It seems he is sitting up and doing some of his paperwork so hopefully a bit better.
I am not Catholic but I don't mind updates on the Pope's condition. It's only a few minutes of my day.

missdeke Tue 25-Feb-25 14:18:18

He's just a man, and an old one at that. Sad that it is, it's no different from any other sick person. I think he should be left alone by the media.

Galton Tue 25-Feb-25 14:21:10

I too am not a Roman Catholic but I still pray for his recovery and I have very faith that he will be just fine. He is good hands.

StoneofDestiny Tue 25-Feb-25 14:38:49

I’m fed up hearing about the royal family every day, but I guess some people are interested.

meddijess Tue 25-Feb-25 15:00:49

Me too! Lots of us Catholics around!

Mojack26 Tue 25-Feb-25 15:04:15

I'm not Catholic but lot are and regardless he is a significant world leader. I'd rather hear about The Pope than Trump the egotistical narcissist....

I wish that this website offered a 'thumbs up/thumbs down' option after comments. Just about every other similar site does.

Then I could have clicked the 'thumbs down' option after reading your comment!!

I pray not for his recovery but that he should be at peace whatever form that is to take. Sometimes death can be seen as healing. I like to hear that he is comfortable and appreciate the updates. By the way I didn’t hear him mentioned at all on the BBC 10 pm news last night.

mum2three Tue 25-Feb-25 15:24:18

The Pope is a very significant personage to many, many people in this world. He is seriously ill and they want updates on his condition, which is perfectly natural.

theworriedwell It’s usually because the patient will be unconscious and not be aware of any pain etc. They seem to ‘go to sleep and don’t wake up’😟
In previous centuries, the vigil was an important part of family life and Catholicism is very family-orientated (brought up RC and am a “born-again Christian”).

Globally speaking, there’s no division in true spirituality- it’s not just Catholics praying for the Pope, there will be other Christian denominations as well as other religious groups who will keep vigil at this time.
I have Muslim friends who are just about to start Ramadan, (fasting sunrise to sunset for a month) and they are praying for God’s Will for the Pope.

Hope this helps people understand the reason why the media is covering Pope Francis’ illness.
(And the cynical bit of me guesses they’re getting fed up of reporting on the US situation!)

GrauntyHelen Tue 25-Feb-25 15:41:30

It's a you problem Are you one of those people who is afraid of death and dying and think it shouldn't be spoken of ?

wibblywobblywobblebottom Tue 25-Feb-25 15:51:29

I don't listen to the radio.

Susieq62 Tue 25-Feb-25 15:54:38

Having read and watched “ Conclave” I find it all fascinating.
