A brilliant idea from Galen...

So as many of you will know, following on from the whole selfie phenomenon, Galen volunteered to do her own pose to raise money (and awareness) for research into cancer. (You can find the original thread HERE

That got us thinking, and in consultation with Galen we have come up with the idea of doing our very own Calendar Girls style calendar. To raise money (and we are happy for people to decide which charity). To raise awareness (ditto). And also to turn on its head the idea that older people (and one person we spoke to who is working to get "older" people online is targetting those above 45...) cannot be internet savvy and up to speed with the latest technology.

So - classic poses with any bits that need hiding (smile) hidden not with the obvious cakes and flowers but with smart phones, lap tops, tablets, e readers etc.

Galen has laid claim to the Rokeby Venus with a Mac Air instead of a mirror. Now all we need is 11 other gransnetters to volunteer too (groups welcome!)

There will be nothing on show that you don't want on show. Logistics are being logisticised (is that a word?!) so do pick a pose and join the fun...

I shall look forward to seeing you all in glorious colour [or are you aiming for arthouse black/white? Count me out though.

MaryXYX Thu 03-Apr-14 14:49:54

I'm daft enough to do it. There is an important question though - who takes the photos?

Galen Thu 03-Apr-14 15:12:32

Gonna are working on the logistics.
Wouldn't it be good if they could find a famous (elderly) photographer who'd do it for free in aid of the charity?

Galen Thu 03-Apr-14 15:13:13

Gonna? GNHQ. What is wrong with my typing today?

Galen Thu 03-Apr-14 15:14:12

nonnie there's always photoshop for the background!

Galen Thu 03-Apr-14 15:25:32

Try looking at Renoir and Cezanne for ideas. Or you are big, beautiful and proud of it a chap called Bolero

An amateur dramatic group here made a calendar last summer to raise extra money when they performed Calendar Girls. They had a very professional calendar made and asked for a minimum donation of 5 euros for it. They raised over 8000 euros for the Algarve Oncology Association.

You can google The Algaveans Calendar Girls if you want to see their calendar.

Ana Thu 03-Apr-14 15:52:32

I did do, but nothing came up for it, dustyangel.

Elegran Thu 03-Apr-14 16:02:58

Try algarve.angloinfo.com/classifieds/viewfeatured/255333/the-algarveans-calendar-girls-/ It looks promising (that is, the site does. I have not yet found the actual calendar)

Elegran Thu 03-Apr-14 16:08:48

A google image search for "Algarve calendar girls" gets quite a few pics.

Ana Thu 03-Apr-14 16:12:11

No 'r' in dustyangel's reference - no wonder it didn't come up with anything! grin

Lizziehop2 Thu 03-Apr-14 16:18:12

Well, I would volunteer but only if its a proper photographer - not the 'old man'!!!! And at 66 I am really happy with my 52kg body!!! A 'chair' pose with my IPhone sounds interesting!!!!!!!!!!!

Elegran Thu 03-Apr-14 16:27:19

There is an answer to Ana that is all about having our Rs on show. I'm not feeling witty enough to create it right now, so just make up your own.

Anne58 Thu 03-Apr-14 16:30:40

I think if the Christine Keeler one gets done it should be in black and white roses

rubylady Thu 03-Apr-14 17:23:07

I'd be up for it, anything if it helps a charity. My son (nearly 17) would be mortified but hey, even more of a reason to do it! I'll look through some ideas and get back. Only problem would be where it would be done and travelling? X

jcdoh Thu 03-Apr-14 17:31:29

PHOENIX love your ideas --very tempting ....might try some poses ---but whether or not I contribute
uuuummm not sure!

dustyangel Thu 03-Apr-14 18:11:54

Sorry Ana, I was trying to sort out the link when we had a visitor.

Thankyou Elegran I would never have managed to blue the link even if I'd made sure all the Rs were on show. grin

dustyangel Thu 03-Apr-14 18:16:17

Actually remembering how much fun that group had combined with the normalising effect of talking about it, it doesn't seem such a daunting idea after all.

Ana Thu 03-Apr-14 18:21:48

Have no fear of links in future, dustyangel, GNHQ have now made the 'blueing' automatic! smile

dustyangel Thu 03-Apr-14 18:31:58

smile

Anne58 Thu 03-Apr-14 18:48:26

I will be very interested to find out how this is going to work, if it will be done by professional photographers (not sure if I'm right about that?) will they come to us, or us go to them? I suppose if a group photo is to be included, it will be us going to them!

If that IS that case, what a bloody good jolly meet that would be! grin

Valbeasixties Thu 03-Apr-14 20:05:32

Yes, yes, yes! Why not indeed!

JessM Thu 03-Apr-14 20:17:47

Professional female photographers? Would we get a huge budget for hairandmakeup
Sounds like an absolutely brilliant way to embarrass ones adult children. grin

Galen Thu 03-Apr-14 20:36:26

I suspect GNHQ are watching this with interst.
I've had a pm from a male member asking if men will be included? I've referred him to GNHQ but how would you all feel about including a man?
We also ought to think about what charity? Here's a few ideas
Age uk
CLIC
save the children
Alzheimer's research?
