A brilliant idea from Galen...

So as many of you will know, following on from the whole selfie phenomenon, Galen volunteered to do her own pose to raise money (and awareness) for research into cancer. (You can find the original thread HERE

That got us thinking, and in consultation with Galen we have come up with the idea of doing our very own Calendar Girls style calendar. To raise money (and we are happy for people to decide which charity). To raise awareness (ditto). And also to turn on its head the idea that older people (and one person we spoke to who is working to get "older" people online is targetting those above 45...) cannot be internet savvy and up to speed with the latest technology.

So - classic poses with any bits that need hiding (smile) hidden not with the obvious cakes and flowers but with smart phones, lap tops, tablets, e readers etc.

Galen has laid claim to the Rokeby Venus with a Mac Air instead of a mirror. Now all we need is 11 other gransnetters to volunteer too (groups welcome!)

There will be nothing on show that you don't want on show. Logistics are being logisticised (is that a word?!) so do pick a pose and join the fun...

Otherwise the message might come across as, "Oh please look after us. We're old --as well as daft--"

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Apr-14 10:39:19

Any idea why we should care whether or not people think we are technology savvy?

merlotgran Fri 04-Apr-14 10:41:01

A lot of people don't give a stuff what happens to the elderly. This country is turning into somewhere that's not very nice to grow old in. We're called GRANSnet which suggests we might care about our future.

I can't say I get excited about UNICEF or WaterAid when there are so many care issues to be addressed.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Apr-14 11:06:32

Right o. grin

gillybob Fri 04-Apr-14 11:46:19

I admit to being a little confused by this thread. Is it just me? confused

Nonnie Fri 04-Apr-14 12:37:14

I suggest cancer research or Macmillan nurses. They both affect more older people than young so would suit us all but don't give the impression of so doing and everyone supports them.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Apr-14 12:46:06

GilMaybe100 has raised some valid points.

gillybob Fri 04-Apr-14 12:50:27

I have just read through the entire thread. At first I thought it was some kind of crazy wind-up and then realised that it might be serious?????????

Can't believe that only a few weeks ago some people were banging on about banning page 3 and now here we have a thread suggesting some of us should take our clothes off and hide behind bits of technology.

I's sorry but I just don't get it.

NfkDumpling Fri 04-Apr-14 13:16:06

Only just found this thread - I can be really, really slow sometimes.

I think raising money for Alzheimer's would be good. It can affect us all, and is the poor relation while cancer research seems to rake in a lot more dosh.

I can see Gillybob's point. Perhaps oldies doing mad stuff like white water rafting? But not naked. I don't do naked these days except when a bath is needed. 1) there's too much of me to be aesthetically pleasing and 2) I get cold easily.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Apr-14 13:30:49

Are these calenders supposed to be funny, or titillating. confused

Perhaps so long as they make money for charity it doesn't matter.

Not sure I would want to open a new month with another pic of a nekkid GNr

Galen Fri 04-Apr-14 14:11:14

Phoenix I had the same thought as I typed it! but thought some of you might 'rise' to the comment grin

ffinnochio Fri 04-Apr-14 14:17:29

Yes Jingle, I'm inclined to agree about the mixed message. Also, why the nudity if anonymity is preferred, with delicate areas covered by technological bits and bobs. May as well be fully dressed or just go full frontal naked.

GilMaybe100 As has been said before, I think you've raised some valid points, particularly re. the objectification of women and that one may as well just donate. As for stupid pictures - no, they don't cure cancer. I suppose I feel the same about this idea as I did about the fb 'selfies' phenomenon - in that it raises awareness. Not something that appeals to me particularly.

Elegran Fri 04-Apr-14 14:29:53

You could get anonymity by pixellating faces. After all, most of us are recognised more readily by our faces than by our nudy bits.

rosesarered Fri 04-Apr-14 14:56:41

Is anyone really going to go ahead with this?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Apr-14 15:10:19

Can I just reply to a private message I have received?

No thank you. smile

grin

annsixty Fri 04-Apr-14 15:11:30

Does no-one else feel GN runs the risk of ridicule by this? Just a thought.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Apr-14 15:11:31

Wrong thread! Should have been on the GILF thread.

Why are they merging on my brain? confused

Ana Fri 04-Apr-14 15:26:30

I had the same thought, annsixty...hmm

merlotgran Fri 04-Apr-14 17:53:57

I agree with Annsixty and Ana. It sounds like fun but it's not exactly breaking new ground as it's been done by so many groups and clubs that I don't think it will draw attention to Gransnet in a positive way.

Nonu Fri 04-Apr-14 18:09:17

"IF" it was organised properly , I would be game. However I did not realise that we had to seek sponsers, sorry, I could not do that !
Hmmmm

kittylester Fri 04-Apr-14 18:10:42

I think something is a good idea but I wouldn't do it naked! blush

There must be something that shows us in an innovative way?

Either way, i will buy some, I think we should all have a say on where the money goes but maybe we could split it between a children's charity and one for older people! After all, it will be a best seller!

Ariadne Fri 04-Apr-14 18:18:29

I really, really can't go for this, and I am sorry I can't - I have given it a lot of thought. As many of you know, I am a cancer survivor, (fingers firmly crossed,) and have been an Ambassador for CRUK for quite a while. I would go a long way to help the cause. So there are my credentials.

But:

a) I think that, as a fundraising concept, it has been very over done.

b) We may think we should be proud of our bodies; others won't. While there might be some medai on our side, the ridicule and the comments that would ensue would be detrimental to the cause. Think what we might have said about such photos earlier in our lives. And

c) We do not want to be a laughing stock. Well, I don't. We do want to be seen as lively, intelligent, technologically adept women who have accepted the ages at which they are.

So, I can't agree with this if it involves exposing our bodies. And, as I have said, I am not sure about the calendar idea anyway. Good photos of us, looking as we would want to be seen (and that will vary from person to person) doing things that show us to be all the things I have said in c) and
more.

Ana Fri 04-Apr-14 18:25:35

Well said, Ariadne. I agree with you on all points.

ffinnochio Fri 04-Apr-14 19:06:34

Well said Ariadne. sunshine

annsixty Fri 04-Apr-14 19:29:27

Like Ariadne I am a BC survivor, my body is now far from attractive== well at my age it wouldn't be anyway, which is why I made my original point. We would look like foolish attention seekers and the charitable aspect is not relevant. We can give to charity if we choose to.
