Gransnet or Nannynet?

(112 Posts)

I recently had a post deleted because it contravened the guidelines, it wasn't obscene, racist or a personal attack. It was a very bad taste joke the subject of which doesn't really matter. There is in British politics a long history of using satire and bad taste to highlight problems and I wonder why Gransnet feel this is unsuitable for the forums? I certainly would make the joke I made on here to my friends. It was posted on a thread with a warning about bad language so not for the fainthearted. Presumably Jonthan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" where he proposes that the Irish should eat their children as a solution to famine would be regarded as unacceptable and deleted. Come on Gransnet, either set up a warning system and make some posts more appropriate to thinking adults, or just accept the satire part of political debate, but please stop acting like Nanny, we are grown ups!

I missed all this by being on holiday. I have a Gransnet meet up this week so am looking forward to be relayed all this first hand. wink

kittylester Sat 16-May-15 14:44:10

Don't rely on me*Teetime*, I didn't see it either! pompa and I were obviously together doing something else - shame I can't remember what! grin.

pompa Sat 16-May-15 15:00:25

Careful Kitty or we might have to impose an "X" cert.

rosequartz Sat 16-May-15 15:08:46

I either didn't see it or can't remember (confused] - I don't read all the threads!
Perhaps I was with pompa and kitty blush but I can't remember that either! (sorry pompa)

pompa Sat 16-May-15 15:13:48

OMG, a threesome now, it get's worse grin

Charleygirl Sat 16-May-15 16:02:19

Sorry pompa it is now a foursome

janeainsworth Sat 16-May-15 16:20:35

jingl why do you assume everyone reads your threads?
I didn't read it either.
confused

rosequartz Sat 16-May-15 18:24:41

Sorry pompa it is now a foursome

I am now singing!

There were four in the bed and the little one said
Roll over, roll over
So they all rolled over
and one fell out

Oh - perhaps five if janea joins us

grin

Completely and utterly confused

But slinging vitriol at other members is hardly in the spirit of liberalism either. Is it?

Iam64 Sat 16-May-15 18:49:09

All of this totally passed me by. What didn't pass me by way the unpleasant comments directed at Soutra who surely didn't deserve any of it.

soontobe Sat 16-May-15 19:13:27

jingl
I learnt from the pompa episode, that no matter how often a poster is on grnanset, not all posters, will know another poster by a long way.
I also realised, that by the same token, not everyone will read all threads, by a long way. No matter if they are witty or have capital letters or whatever. And no matter, what time of day, or which day they are posted.

For what it is worth, from a religious point of view, it sounds like the thread wasnt really suitable was it? Soutra does have a point.

It is probably quite likely, that we will all get at least one post or thread deleted while we are on gransnet, even possibly unfairly. That is the nature of gransnet and internet forums.

Ana Sat 16-May-15 19:15:45

I don't think that's at all likely in the case of a great many Gransnetters, soontobe! hmm

annodomini Sat 16-May-15 19:27:18

Four years and counting, I don't think I've ever had a post deleted, soon. However, I am open to correction! hmm

absent Sat 16-May-15 19:54:41

trisher I think you need to re-read A Modest Proposal. Swift's suggested "solution" to the problem of famine in Ireland was much harsher than that.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 16-May-15 21:43:36

"from a religious point of view" ???

There was nothing religious about it! What are you talking about?! And I am sick of your bloody self satisfied preaching. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 16-May-15 21:44:44

That was to soontobe.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 16-May-15 21:49:11

And I repeat. The posts to me from Soutra came across as plain nasty. And if you bother to read the thread it is there in black and white.

I do not know the personal details of posters' lives, and I think it is unreasonable that we cannot defend ourselves without other posters coming on and calling us "snide", which I take as an insult. angry this is a forum. If you are feeling that fragile don't have a pop at others, because, in my case, it will come right back at you.

soontobe Sat 16-May-15 22:41:41

jingl. Someday in the future you may like me again. It is how you are smile

janeainsworth Sat 16-May-15 22:52:33

Tell me jingl, why is ok for you to describe Soutra as having 'precious sensibilities' ( which sounds sarcastic whether you intended it or not) and to tell Farnorth not to 'worry her pretty little head' ( also comes across as sarcastic), and then further down the thread, complain that you yourself are the recipient of snide remarks?
I have never actually seen any snide remarks levelled at you, but I've seen you fire off plenty yourself.
confused

I missed it too - I think. Either that, or didn't notice anything offensive and missed it being deleted. I hate it, really hate it when GN delete something, and I didn't see it.

And if something is deemed to need deleting, please can we have a reason other than it breaching the guidelines? I want to know which ones. Obscenity? Liability? Bad language? Bad taste? Not something a grandparent should say?

absent Sun 17-May-15 07:03:01

Soono be Are you sure that jingl liked you in the first place, never mind again? She can be quite capricious in her likes and dislikes. (jingl That is not any kind of criticism of you.)

absent Sun 17-May-15 07:04:31

Soono be*…and that is just one glass of pre-dinner wine. Whoops! *soontobe is of course the poster I was addressing.

absent Sun 17-May-15 07:05:38

Oh bugger. I think I should just log off and hit the whole bottle!

kittylester Sun 17-May-15 07:13:42

Language absent winegrin

I don't think I've ever had a thread deleted and would be blush if I did!
