We're VERY excited to announce that we are finally testing out a new site design! We've been working really hard to make sure it's easier to user and looks neater than the current format.

It is a test though and it may take a day or two to get used to. Apologies in advance for any teething problems - hopefully they'll be minimal. If you have any major problems logging in or you can't access certain things please post on this thread or email us at contactus. We'd love to have your thoughts. smile

will there be a whistle on the lanyard?
we can all be thread referees then
or Brown Owl

Alima Sat 05-Aug-17 10:13:29

Oh goody, a brown and yellow outfit! Things can't get much better!

It isn't just the font that's different. There is no Last Hour button, which I use a lot. The format, too, is different. Own posts are highlighted in blue, which is useful. HQ posts are now pink, and not green. Fewer posts to a page. Time of post over on the R/H side. Three dots for a drop down that includes PM and report also on R/H side. Maybe others had this layout anyway. I'm talking about desktop site on my iPad. It will take some getting used to and I did prefer the comfort of the old, familiar Gransnet layout. Feel I'm venturing into uncharted waters here. OK, an exaggeration, but I like familiarity!

Jalima1108 Sat 05-Aug-17 10:17:28

I've still got Last Hour
The colours and layout are different on a pc to an iPad then confused

Indinana Sat 05-Aug-17 10:18:42

"Own posts are highlighted in blue, which is useful. HQ posts are now pink, and not green."

Really? Not on my iMac. Everything is monochrome. The only sign of colour is the odd username here and there that is blue (presumably to indicate their profile is public?)

Oh, and the preview of this post showed that the ^^ aren't working, i.e. they don't italicise.

Jalima1108 Sat 05-Aug-17 10:20:32

they don't italicise.

I will try again

Jalima1108 Sat 05-Aug-17 10:20:39

Nope

Ana Sat 05-Aug-17 10:24:10

Jalima, I sent you a PM yesterday - now I'm worried it's gone astray! confused

ninathenana Sat 05-Aug-17 10:31:40

Jalima your 10.20 post is in italics on the mobile site using my android phone.
HQ posts are pink on mobile and green on desk top for me.

FarNorth Sat 05-Aug-17 10:37:01

Oh, I get it. You're making it more like Mumsnet. Hmm. Will see what I think when I get used to it.

Jalima1108 Sat 05-Aug-17 10:38:46

I've got it now Ana - thank you!

This new layout is confusing me (it doesn't take a lot these days)

FarNorth Sat 05-Aug-17 10:42:44

I like having my own posts highlighted. Would like OP posts to be highlighted too.
It's much easier to see the date and time. smile Wow! Smileys without having to type it all out! sunshine

Blinko Sat 05-Aug-17 10:44:12

Gillybob, Friday 16:35 post. Hilarious!

Luckygirl Sat 05-Aug-17 10:44:27

Mumsnet has a sans serif font - and is all the better for it!

Ana Sat 05-Aug-17 10:47:23

I'm finding the numbers difficut to read - they seem squashed in, somehow.

Indinana Sat 05-Aug-17 10:48:24

Oh I see - the blue and pink highlights are just on the mobile site.
And no, FarNorth, I don't think they are making it more like Mumsnet, because they have always had the OP's subsequent posts highlighted over there (in green), and not just on the mobile site, but on the desktop site too. We still don't appear to have that feature on the desktop site hmm

Indinana Sat 05-Aug-17 10:50:49

"Wow! Smileys without having to type it all out!"

Again, not on the desktop site. You've always been able to do this on the mobile site FarNorth

Blinko Sat 05-Aug-17 10:55:06

The only comment I'd like to make is please, please, please can we have a sans serif typeface? This one looks too TNR for me.

goldengirl Sat 05-Aug-17 10:59:44

It's OK but I still think the logo is rather old fashioned and am disappointed with it. The font is also old fashioned but if posts areeasier to read for most posters then that's fine by me.

varian Sat 05-Aug-17 11:06:26

Please use a more modern sans serif font - this one is so dated it reinforces the old codger image.

varian Sat 05-Aug-17 11:07:34

Why can't we have a search facility which presents the results in chronological order?

JackyB Sat 05-Aug-17 11:13:45

What's still missing is a list of posts at the side. So often someone mentions a post by someone else, and it's impossible to find that particular post, a search of the page is only a help, if the post itself is on the same page, otherwise you are hopping to and fro and in the end have forgotten why you were looking for that post after all.

Another site I am on has existed since 1999 and has always had such a summary list at the side of a thread so that you can click on a name and have a quick look at the previous post referred to. I suppose because it's a feature that is now nearly 20 years old, it is considered old-fashioned.

I'm not getting all this grey many have mentioned - neither on tablet nor on laptop. The big advance is that my own posts are now blue on the laptop as well as on the mobile devices.

Indinana Sat 05-Aug-17 11:37:51

"The big advance is that my own posts are now blue on the laptop as well as on the mobile devices."

Mine aren't sad. They're not highlighted on my iMac and I thought that might just be a quirk of the Apple system, so now I'm on my Windows laptop and it's just the same, no highlighting of my posts.

Chewbacca Sat 05-Aug-17 11:41:30

Only the posts from GNHQ are in pink on my tablet, and my own posts are highlighted in blue. Everything else is grey. I still find the font easier to read though.

ninathenana Sat 05-Aug-17 12:29:01

I find it totally baffling that even when on the same site some can see what others can't and to dosen't appear to be down to the type of device your using.
