Hi all,

As of this afternoon many of you will have noticed a new consent form pop up. Apologies for the late notice - we'd hoped to get a post up earlier to give you advance warning but our resources were focused on getting it up and running as quickly and efficiently as possible.

As a responsible publisher we follow the recommendations of the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB UK) - here's a bit more information about them.

The IAB asks that we allow users to say if you consent to your data being used or not. We've been doing this for quite a while now and this is the pop-up you would have previously seen when you came to Gransnet.

What's happened is that as of tomorrow the IAB is brining in a new standard that publishers have to comply with. The new standard gives the user even more choice over the data that can be collected and used - which is why you are now seeing a new pop-up with far more privacy options.
Whilst it may look a bit OTT it's actually been designed by the IAB to make it better for users and give you more control.

So please don't be worried about this new pop-up - it will in fact give you more information and choice over your privacy.

Hope this helps smile
GNHQ

Marydoll the ‘Legitimate’ ones are all of the advertisers who GN are saying have the rights to your data, not only on your device, but other devices at your home.
Not my idea of Legitimate.

And if you go to Privacy settings at the bottom of the page , you will see that they revert back to ‘Consent’ as soon as you press Submit.

Rainwashed Sat 15-Aug-20 12:22:21

I have put everything on grey but adverts still come up on the side is this normal?

Oopsadaisy3 Sat 15-Aug-20 12:26:15

rainwashed some of the things you have slid to Grey, slide back to blue when you click ‘submit’ hence the ads.

There is no way to stop it!

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 12:44:36

Same here Marydoll. It has been suggested to me, on another thread about this subject, that GNHQ are having to raise revenue via advertising and that if we want to retain a free service, we should be prepared to accept the unwanted advertisements too. I can see the argument for this however, if that is the case, surely there should have been more clarity and honesty from GNHQ in the first place. Instead, we've been led to believe that we can opt out of all; when in fact, we cannot. I'm undecided as to whether this is deliberately disingenuous or a genuine tech blip that can be resolved. Please can you confirm GNHQ?

Thank you Oopsadaisy 3.

I take back what I said above about changing your internet settings to preserve Gransnet cookies so as to make sure they were not deleted when the browser closes. I did that, choosing not to have unwanted adverts pop up every two minutes, but I STILL have had to fill in the blasted form every time I used my laptop again to access Gransnet (The same device on which I selected my choices and submitted them)

I have tried leaving the "legitimate interest" button blue but it STILL asks me to repeat the performance every time. Does it only register and keep your selections if you make the "right" choices and get all the ads that can possibly be sent you?

This is getting tedious and wastes vast amounts of my time. After nine years of Gransnet, I too am having serious thoughts of abandoning ship.

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 13:05:28

It's a pain in the ar*e isn't it Elegran? Interestingly, Mumsnet doesn't seem to be similarly afflicted.

moggie57 Sat 15-Aug-20 13:19:00

youe data gets passed on anyway . if you got cookies then you got 3rd party people .whether we agree or not ,is a lot of hogwash .no disrespect to gransnetters or admin...but the above message was confusing ,just a simple i agree /i dont agree ..

Kamiso Sat 15-Aug-20 13:50:00

I was shocked when I found I could suddenly access various accounts (not just GN) on my laptop, iPad and iPhone but worse still when OHs emails came up as well. I have zero interest in motor racing, cricket or football but what happens to someone trying to escape domestic violence or just family letting off steam about another member privately- or so they thought. GN is a business and they need revenue but safety should still be a priority surely?

B9exchange Sat 15-Aug-20 16:59:21

I don't understand why there is an option to switch off 'legitimate interest' on all these organisations (don't understand why they should have a 'legitimate interest' in my data anyway) but it makes no difference, your selection is not recorded, which I suspect is contrary to GDPR?

Puzzler61 Sat 15-Aug-20 17:04:21

It could be a technical hitch with the program that has been written for these numerous new data usage options.

If it is, GNHQ need to report it as a fault and have the IT company responsible to test it.

Puzzler61 Sat 15-Aug-20 17:04:49

Glitch. not hitch

NotSpaghetti Sat 15-Aug-20 18:59:13

LaraGransnet PLEASE can we have a “No to ALL” button?

Elegran Sat 15-Aug-20 19:49:52

I have tried to answer my own question and find out what "legitimate interests" are (as it is now the weekend and we don't seem to be gtting any answers from Gransnet HQ)

So far I am only getting even more confused, but for anyone else who would like it clarified, I am posting some links to explanations.

econsultancy.com/gdpr-for-marketers-five-examples-of-legitimate-interests/
blogs.kcl.ac.uk/kslreuropeanlawblog/?p=1471
gdpr.report/news/2018/04/30/consent-versus-legitimate-interests/

I hope that makes it all clearer for us.

Bathsheba Sat 15-Aug-20 20:04:54

I accept that we cannot stop the adverts - of course the site has to get its revenue from somewhere, that's perfectly normal. What is unacceptable is that we are seemingly given a choice about whether or not our data is used, and then as soon as we submit our 'choices', all of the grey buttons toggle back to blue again.

LaraGransnet can we please have a full and proper explanation about this? I, and I'm sure many others, want to know exactly what is this 'legitimate interest' that no matter how many times I toggle to 'off' immediately defaults to 'on'. This is not about adverts, but about these vendors using our data. I do not consent to that, and if I am unable to properly and permanently deselect this consent I shall be leaving GN.

Bathsheba Sat 15-Aug-20 20:11:11

Elegran I think I must have still been composing my post when you posted that link about 'Legitimate Interest'. Though to be truthful it's as clear as ditchwater to me. Perhaps I'm just thick hmm

Puzzler61 Sat 15-Aug-20 20:39:47

Not much consideration has been shown to us, even though 3 threads have been running , full of concern, since yesterday.

It would have been appreciated if someone from HW could have been on call today and answered our questions and allayed our fears.

I feel the same as Bathsheba at the moment.

Puzzler61 Sat 15-Aug-20 20:40:31

HQ ! It keeps changing to HW !!

ladymuck Sat 15-Aug-20 20:58:45

I would like to know exactly which personal data they are able to access. If what Kamiso says is true, it suggests they not only get our e-mail address, they are able to read the e-mails too. If so that is a total breach of our privacy and is not at all acceptable.

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 21:04:35

Total disregard for users data privacy and the lack of response just adds insult to injury.

Elegran Sat 15-Aug-20 21:37:57

Bathsheba I think all of us must be thick, or possiblyit is just that people in the marketing world think we are thick because we are all well over 50.

We are all quite with-it enough to be able to see that we have not been told everything, and that the software we have been using to select and save our choice of privacy is not doing what it says on the tin.

winterwhite Sat 15-Aug-20 21:46:23

Another request, please, for a clear definition from HQ of ‘legitimate interest’ and who defined it. This seems a perfectly legitimate request and should not be dodged.
I wonder whether it would be possible to offer a subscription service as an alternative?

Curlywhirly Sun 16-Aug-20 00:35:41

GNHQ is there anybody there??? Has anybody ever had any posts deleted at weekends? Maybe they only work Monday to Friday!

Spangler Sun 16-Aug-20 08:50:30

I may be a dunderhead at technology, but I'm almost paranoid about the harvesting of my personal data. Whether that's here, other social media sites or just when browsing. If you feel as I do, you can fight back.

Can you see three vertical dots at the top r/h side of the screen? That's the customise & control button. Right click on it. The drop down menu should have: "History" somewhere on the list. Click on it.

Left click the box of the first line, hold down the shift key and do the same with the last line, all boxes will now be ticked. go back to the top and click delete.

Across the page click on: Browsing data, then click all three boxes, then click the clear data box. You've just got rid of cookies, temporary files and everything else that spies on you. An added benefit of doing this regularly is that your computer will never run slow.

Elegran Sun 16-Aug-20 09:18:57

If you use Firefox, those three dots won't be there. Instead there is a list across the top left of the screen that goes "File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help" Selecting "History" will bring up a window where you can do the same kind of things that Spangler suggests.

*Tools" brings up some interesting possibilities too. They include "Options" which has under "Privacy" some choices to apply generally to the things mentioned in the Gransnet consent form. Even if you don't apply them, it is worth a read to see what actions by a site you could be blocking.
