Hello
Are Gransnet and Mumsnet the same 'company', and are posting rules the same?
What follows now is what prompted my to ask.

I had three comments deleted on Tuesday due to them 'breaking talk guidelines', more specifically because they were 'gossip and speculation'. I was told to 'bear this is mind before posting'.
(There is no mention of 'gossip and speculation' in the Talk Guidelines).

I was rather surprised, for reasons which shall become clear, and a teeny bit peeved; but took in on the chin and totally accepted it.

However, it later came to mind that I'd actually learnt said 'gossip and speculation' (which isn't allowed) on Mumsnet.

Furthermore, I learnt this 'gossip and speculation' on a very long running MN thread from 2019, which concerned another senior member of the Windsor's alleged affair.

This morning I searched on MN for the name of this second alleged mistress, and her name appears over eighty times in relation to the Royal Family member.

One of the thread titles in which she appears is '(Insert name here) alleged affair' and another is titled 'Why are the UK press silent about Royal Family Member's alleged affair?'

They are very long running threads and are still available. There are many more threads which discuss the issue.

So, to cut a long story short; are talk guidelines the same on both sites, as it appears that they aren't.
I was under the impression that Gransnet and Mumsnet were one and the same.
Please can you shed some light on this?
Thank you very much!

Oh, and 'rumour and speculation' quite evidently is allowed on this site, (there's plenty about M&H, Kate & William, and on News threads etc) unless of course it's reported

FannyCornforth Thu 18-Mar-21 11:21:06

Wow, thank you Jane, that really is marvellous
Hope you feel better soon thanksbrew

nanna8 Thu 18-Mar-21 11:31:55

Jane I enjoyed that. Reminded me of what that Thatcher woman did and I was so thankful we didn’t live in the UK at that time. My bestie had a brother who was a fisherman in the Scottish Isles. She took his livelihood, his pride and ultimately his life.

I thought it was allowed unless, of course, something is sub judice.
Or is it that Gransnet could be sued?

No - possible libel as well is an issue as are comments which might be racist etc. MN have been taken to court twice I believe and had to reveal the names of the posters concerned to the courts. IMO some of the RF threads sail very close to the winds of these issues. Subjudice I think GN would be held directly liable ( see current thread on Site Stuff Forum)

Galaxy Thu 18-Mar-21 12:05:50

It must be a nightmare to be honest. I think MN in particular must be like walking a tightrope.

NellG Thu 18-Mar-21 12:06:48

Ummmm - what would we actually talk about if the site(s) weren't full of gossip and speculation? Opinion IS gossip and speculation.

Or are we supposed to attach a full appendix of citable sources to every comment...

Unless a comment is clearly defamation - as in a wholly created issue posted with the intent to cause harm then at most it's just something that may or may not tickle the nerve of someone's sensibilities.

Unless it's defamation, hate speech or bullying - those should always be addressed.

suziewoozie Thu 18-Mar-21 12:08:56

I remember ages ago when I couldn’t sleep and read a thread on MN ( early hours of morning) with a group of posters discussing very very negatively à named teacher at a named independent school. I could hardly believe my eyes. I emailed MN in the middle of the night and said they had to take it down immediately. It was down by breakfast but if it hadn’t been I was going to phone the school. That poor teacher. It’s not always ‘just’ about idle gossip, rumour or speculation

Well atm there are some sensible threads were facts and well argued posts are welcome. And yes, links and sources are helpful to sensible discussion - even when rubbishing incessantly MM

Galaxy Thu 18-Mar-21 12:11:19

It depends on the opinion. I think fanny was rude is very different to I think fanny shoplifts. The issue of who gets to decide what is hate speech, bullying etc is massively problematic but that's at a society level rather than at a GN level. Imagine Trump was in charge of Twitter, the definition of hate speech might be one you wouldnt like.

Hi, we've spotted this thread and wanted to respond to a few things. We are post-moderated so we are only alerted to spam or issues if they are reported to us. As many of you will know, we don't simply delete threads because they are reported to us and read the post itself and those around it to get context before taking any action. So if one poster reports another multiple times that doesn't mean the one being reported will necessarily have their posts removed. The guidelines are here. smile

NellG Thu 18-Mar-21 12:43:50

I think that's part of the problem Galaxy who does get to decide? Some peoples definitions are broader than others. There are thing is see that I feel need to be mentioned, there are thing others see that they think need to be challenged. They probably feel they are mentioning it, I sometimes feel they are challenging. Perception is a fickle beast. Assumption is a monster.

Jaxjacky Thu 18-Mar-21 12:43:50

rafichagran I’m with your last para.
I too enjoy this site, but I certainly don’t post in the same way I would speak to friends, the written word is so different and you can’t read body language. I rarely dip into MN unless if I’m searching for something specific. No issues with GN, as someone else said their site, their rules.

suziewoozie Thu 18-Mar-21 12:47:27

I think we’ve done well to keep this thread going without it being deleted. It’s hard as references to other threads are inevitable. So thanks Fanny agsin for starting a useful thread. What I’d really like to happen is just less personally driven reactions to people. If a post is personally nasty or mean to someone, it would be nice if more people were willing to call it out and not just let it go because of their own feelings about the poster it’s directed at. Similarly, if a post is mean or unfair or inaccurate about a public figure you personally can’t stand, we shouldn’t just let it go. I think much of what’s happened on GN recently is pretty shoddy to say the least. And I include myself in some of this.

FannyCornforth Thu 18-Mar-21 12:51:37

Hello Stella
Thank you for reading the thread and for your reply
Can you comment on the issues that I raised in the opening post at all please?

Namely, are Talk Guidelines and 'rules' the same on both sites;
and is 'rumour and speculation' against said guidelines?

I am aware that I may be giving you a bit of a tough time. As Galaxy has said upthread, moderating must be a 'nightmate', I also acknowledged that in my email to GNHQ yesterday
Thank you smile

FannyCornforth Thu 18-Mar-21 12:52:35

Thank you Suzie

Galaxy Thu 18-Mar-21 13:19:35

I agree Nell but currently as it stands someone has to decide and of course that is subjective. But I dont think we can expect GN to stand alone in allowing a free for all. The rest of society would have to operate in that way too. And nobody really wants a free for all in terms of speech, they want what they think is acceptable which again is subjective. It's a mess and I suspect it will only worse.

Galaxy Thu 18-Mar-21 13:20:45

Get worse that should say.
Bugger free speech just give me an edit button. No one else just me.

Iam64 Thu 18-Mar-21 13:23:20

Galaxy, maybe we could be democratic. Everyone gets a turn at being edit button monitor

Ro60 Thu 18-Mar-21 13:30:28

NellG I'm shocked! You're always clear, polite, factual & humorous - balannced.

The posts I'm surprised by are the negative ones that begin; 'Why would we discuss this & that', if I'm not interested in a subject I don't go into that 'room'
Just when I walk down the High Street, there are shops I've never been in because they're not part of my life.
A healthy debate however is a different matter & part of what GN is all about.

NellG Thu 18-Mar-21 13:30:40

Maybe it's about how things are called out too. None of us are perfect, me least of all - but I do believe a benefit of the doubt helps and response is better than reaction. I am often guilty of the second, but hey, god loves a trier.

For instance, one word replies feel judgemental and loaded. They smack of moral superiority and are too much open to misinterpretation.

Admissions of culpability help - we all get it wrong sometimes.

Constant quoting and add comments can feel very personally targeted if there's a wall of them.

Mocking is horrible, as is picking on one word and repeating it for effect. Debate the post, don't pillory the poster.

Singling out posters and questioning/commenting on almost everything they post is horrible to watch.

There are a number of posters who do all or some of these, I am not targeting any individual, just asking people to be aware of how that comes across and the effect it has. We don't know what everyone's situation is - some may be here because it's all they have, especially atm. So, all I'm asking is have a heart before an opinion. I will endeavour to do the same.

NellG Thu 18-Mar-21 13:32:13

Ro60 Thanks, but sometimes I am an idiot too. x

rafichagran Thu 18-Mar-21 13:35:43

I have some sympathy with the moderators, I posted upthread, someone disagreed with me, that is fine, I am not offended, as it is in relation to what I posted. It was not personnel, just a difference of opinion.
Gransnet moderators must have to deal with a minefield, as with many differences of opinion, what would upset one poster would not upset another.
I think all moderators can do is keep to the guidelines posted, which will have agreement with some, and disagreement with others.
I will carry on reading and enjoying this site, I will not get involved with what the moderators do. As I said upthread I had 3 posts deleted first time in years. I accepted it and moved on.
Also Gransnet do give warnings before banning, we do not know the circumstances, and moderators cannot disclose the reasons under data protection. Hence the reason I enjoy the site and do not involve myself with the politics.
