Hello
Are Gransnet and Mumsnet the same 'company', and are posting rules the same?
What follows now is what prompted my to ask.

I had three comments deleted on Tuesday due to them 'breaking talk guidelines', more specifically because they were 'gossip and speculation'. I was told to 'bear this is mind before posting'.
(There is no mention of 'gossip and speculation' in the Talk Guidelines).

I was rather surprised, for reasons which shall become clear, and a teeny bit peeved; but took in on the chin and totally accepted it.

However, it later came to mind that I'd actually learnt said 'gossip and speculation' (which isn't allowed) on Mumsnet.

Furthermore, I learnt this 'gossip and speculation' on a very long running MN thread from 2019, which concerned another senior member of the Windsor's alleged affair.

This morning I searched on MN for the name of this second alleged mistress, and her name appears over eighty times in relation to the Royal Family member.

One of the thread titles in which she appears is '(Insert name here) alleged affair' and another is titled 'Why are the UK press silent about Royal Family Member's alleged affair?'

They are very long running threads and are still available. There are many more threads which discuss the issue.

So, to cut a long story short; are talk guidelines the same on both sites, as it appears that they aren't.
I was under the impression that Gransnet and Mumsnet were one and the same.
Please can you shed some light on this?
Thank you very much!

I think it’s is so called lurkers. Those who read posts don’t contribute at all but report threads and get them deleted. Then have the audacity to send private messages giving a lecture on what to discuss or not on posts.

I know we don’t know but I doubt that’s the main source. PMs from lurkers though - flipping heck - hope you blocked them. Cheeky devils

Thank you Lisagran flowers

Was it all that name dropping about Frank Skinner? grin

FannyCornforth Thu 18-Mar-21 10:31:14

Jane ha ha!
I've got plenty of 'rumour and speculation' about him!

NellG Thu 18-Mar-21 10:38:08

In all honesty isn't it a case that a lot of the more innocent reports are likely because people differ on what they find upsetting? I dislike all the 'isms' and will often call them out on the thread, but the idle gossip posting doesn't offend me personally so I don't call it out. As Fanny says, if it's a case of some kind of legally defined defamation then that reason should be given for a deletion.

Galaxy Thu 18-Mar-21 10:38:22

I know that there are lots of threads on MN about the rf, my point is no one cares enough to report. They do on here. There are conversations on other topics on here that wouldnt last 5 seconds on MN. It depends on your demographic.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 18-Mar-21 10:39:50

NellG I do not always agree with your posts, but I would not like to see you banned.

Galaxy Thu 18-Mar-21 10:40:41

But do you really not know why. I have been deleted twice I think. Once because I repeated a deleted post and once because I gave an opinion about a poster who had gone. I might think I was right in my opinion but I knew fine well why I was deleted.

FannyCornforth Thu 18-Mar-21 10:45:03

Thanks Galaxy I realised what you meant after I'd posted my reply.
Sorry, I'm not the full ticket today confused
So it really is all about the reporting, it seems

JaneJudge Thu 18-Mar-21 10:45:30

I am looking forward to the gossip about Mr Skinner grin

JaneJudge Thu 18-Mar-21 10:46:47

There does seem rules for some and rules for 'the others' - 'the others' is always said as Jim from Friday night dinner of course

As I said in my op, they said it was deleted because 'rumour and speculation isn't allowed'.
Which came as rather a surprise, seeing as it's rife!
I was then told to report any threads that I thought were 'rumour and speculation'

JaneJudge Thu 18-Mar-21 10:54:34

It is very Vic Reeves all this, I once met him in the marks and spencers food hall. Is that gossip?

JaneJudge Thu 18-Mar-21 10:55:35

someone has to repeat it to be a rumour or someone else has to speculate that he shops at aldi? then I can report them?

Galaxy Thu 18-Mar-21 10:56:10

Well yes because speculation/rumour could be I have heard that fanny steals boiled sweets, etc. I said 'I think poster who was long gone was (fill in your own word racist, sexist, an arse) the response from HQ was that I had made a statement that couldnt be proved and was subjective, that probably isnt written specifically in the guidelines but I knew why I was deleted.

Galaxy Thu 18-Mar-21 10:57:28

I used to eat the pick and mix from the shop I worked in just in case you are feeling picked on for your shoplifting habits grin

Alegrias1 Thu 18-Mar-21 10:59:30

So, choosing my words carefully because I don't want to be lecturing Fanny again, honest smile

Just because something is all over the internet that doesn't mean that we can repeat it here. There was a certain MP who had lots of rumours about him, we probably all knew who he was but if GNHQ had been seen as allowing his name to be shared they would have been in breach of the law, I think.

I objected to details of a person's personal life being shared while he was being driven home from hospital. I'm not a RF supporter but I think we have standards that we should adhere to; not GN standards, standards of how to behave in society. Gosh, that sounds pompous....

I didn't report you Fanny, but I did tell you off!

JaneJudge Thu 18-Mar-21 11:00:41

The first two times I got deleted/reported were once =newbie not realising, so fair enough. The second was for a joke I made and I can't even remember what it was, the third was because I crossed a line, and stated that I'd reported it.

All 'fair' in and of themselves - but I also feel I've probably said worse elsewhere and not been reported.

I stole a bright green Rimmel eye shadow from Woolies in Cradley Heath blush
So you've got me bang to rights!

EllanVannin Thu 18-Mar-21 11:07:22

NellG could be someone who thinks you're too clever for them, not necessarily that you've " spoken out of turn". Some people are paranoid about having the last word and if they don't get it they have a strop. Or if the discussion doesn't go their way.

muse Thu 18-Mar-21 11:11:17

Just joined the thread and read all comments. Having been with GN now just over a month and never been with MN, I feel I can't compare the two.

I've followed and commented on other threads about GN rules and guidelines and nothing has changed with very little feedback from GNHQ.

Yes - what nana8 says is true and scary.

For the sake of those new to GN, I'd like to see GNHQ in the Talk Guidelines clearly state the process of reporting, warnings and bans. I know others have written to them before and it appears to have fallen on deaf ears.

As FannyCornforth says: (There is no mention of 'gossip and speculation' in the Talk Guidelines).
To quote GN: Gransnet is a lightly moderated site - mainly self-policing.
Also from Talk Guidelines: We take a dim view of mean-spiritedness, ganging-up behaviour and rehashing old arguments. Does that mean that a poster could be repeatedly reported by one or more posters, which could then lead to that person being banned? Or perhaps those doing the repeated reporting being banned?
GNHQ - please explain what actions would result from your dim view. Email on its way.

FannyCornforth Thu 18-Mar-21 11:12:34

I know Alegrias (and don't worry, I don't mind!)

It's the fact that it's all over GNs sister (parent?) website, but not so much as the other affair, that really got my goat!

And then being told that it's 'not allowed' when it clearly is allowed on MN

It seems that the more accurate reason is that it was deleted because it was reported ie it scared the horses

Sorry if I'm rambling!

NB no goats or horses were involved in any rumour or speculation

Fanny, I had my vaccine yesterday so need to go back to bed but try not to be downhearted. Here is my gift to you today x

Th’Earl’s – Gone West

At six an two, an then at ten
Yoe’d ’ear et blow ter tell the men,
Ess time ter change the shift again
Yoe woe ’ear it no moower.

Ah’m on about th’Earl’s bull, yoe know
Et yewsta goo, cum rain, cum snow,
An them fiery ingots orl aglow
Yoe woe see them no moower.

Ef yoe goo by now, the gaetes am shit
On a notice, R.I.P. they’ve put,
Tried ’ard they have ter keep et, but
They woe open them no moower.

Iss like a graveyard, quiet an’ still
Ther’s no sparks a flyin’ in the mill,
Iss another piece uv Bri’ley ’Ill
As woe be used no moower.

Stacks a stonden, tall en proud
Spew forth a red oxide cloude,
Soon ter be covered in a rusting shroud
Fer they woe smoke no moower.

The powers that be, ’ow con they sleep
Orl them men, et meks yer weep,
Chock the lot on the scrap-heap
We doe want them no moower.

An now et’s gone wi’ great regret
Ter get Macgregor out uv debt,
Er monewment to toil an’ sweat
Et woe cum back now moower.

This famous town once Industry’s lap
Like the muffler en cloth cap,
Slowly being rubbed right off the map
Et woe be known no moower.

Baldwin’s en Marsh en Baxters am done
Woolworths the co-ope, and Boots ’ave gone,
The shaps am close, one by one
Never to cum back no moower.

Bri’ley ill’s lost most uv it’s pride, alas
But at least we’ver gorrer touch of class,
We’ve still got Royal Brierley Glass
That wull goo on some moower.

Men round ’eer am bred ter werk
Evolved through tryanny, toil an murk,
Ess in their blood, the never shirk
Why cor they work some moower.

Tossed on the slag heap, ter fall apart
Orl on the dole, left in the cart,
A shocken crime, et breaks yer eart
Et ay our world no moower.
