Hi all

We think that it'd be good for us to get to know each other a bit more.

We at GNHQ are here to moderate the site, look after our users and ensure that Gransnet is an inclusive and supportive community. We're post-moderated, which means that we rely on reports to let us know what's going on. Our aim is to respond to every query we receive, so please don't be afraid to get in touch.

We're also keen to listen to feedback about site functionality, so tell us what you think - we'll always pass feedback on to the relevant team(s) for discussion, with the promise of making Gransnet better and more efficient for all users. If you've got any ideas for improvement then please share them below. Changes at the back end of the site do take time, but we're more than happy to keep you updated during the process.

Please feel free to introduce yourselves by replying below (or send us a hello privately via email/report if you prefer).

P.S Every time you hit the report button, an angel gets its wings (or a troll gets booted off site). <repeatedly clicks report button>

The list of those who have done this again and again, is very long - perhaps you are not aware ?!?

What do you mean Kali?
Who are those who have done this?
Who are they, and what have they done? And who are you addressing?
Thank you - I realise I’ve asked for a lot of clarification!

I’m very aware of the name changers. One such on this thread is on her 5th.

Crikey. I am obviously not very observant.

There is nothing wrong with name changing though unless you have been banned.

If your banned and you happen to move house you will have a new IP address, therefore you can re-register with a new user name.

Blossoming Mon 09-Aug-21 21:06:16

Or you can just change your IP address ?

(I’m still on my first identity, honestly)

There is definitely a secret world of Gransnet that I’m not party to!

The first, and so far only, post from GNHQ, was 5 calendar days and 3 working days ago.

The main content of the thread is simply a repetition of things we have asked for frequently over the last two or three years, (at least). I won't list them again, because we have seen that it never bears fruit.

I am beginning to wonder what they do all day!

Lily says "We at GNHQ are here to moderate the site, look after our users and ensure that Gransnet is an inclusive and supportive community. We're post-moderated, which means that we rely on reports to let us know what's going on. Our aim is to respond to every query we receive, so please don't be afraid to get in touch."

They 'rely on reports'. This is hard to believe, as the recent Portuguese example showed. The thread was repeatedly reported but went on for several pages. I missed what happened in the end, so I apologise if GNHQ had an explanation for that.

Also, 'rely on reports' implies to me that they can't be bothered to read any of the threads, they only react to protests from us, the users.

So, GNHQ - you want to get to know us better. Well, it's all here in the forums for all the world to read. Now we want to get to know you better. What do you do if you don't read the content of your site and how many of you are there doing it?

PS I appreciate that the tech department probably do a lot that we don't see, and if they didn't do it, the site could grind to a halt.

I think the office junior from MN 'looks after' GN.
They'll be playing on their phone most of the time.

Grannybags Tue 10-Aug-21 09:15:48

Has anyone from GNHQ actually read this post?

Come on someone say something!

There is - the dark side. It is NOT pleasant. And a few people in very many different names and guises, have been attacking the same person for a very long time.

They don't like the fact she was not born in the UK.
They don't like the fact she returned 'back home' to her country of birth to look after her elderly and sick parents.

Despite the fact she is British for nearly 50 years and lived in England for all her adult life. British OH, British children and grand-children, British Degree and British career in State edu. But that is not enough, apparently.

So they hound, and they fish, and they prod, and they attack- each thread, each post. Because apparently unless you were born British on British soil, and you currently live away, you have no right to an opinion on the country that became theirs and that they spent their life contributing to in so many ways.

It is, what it is- as Gagajo says, it is all very clear for most to see.

Not pleasant.

‘We are working in it’ really doesn’t wash, unless there is a school work experience kid as thread of IT (and even then . . . ). It is most unlikely that the software is not an ‘off the shelf’ package which doesn’t even need an IT ‘back end’ expert - it will be a case of twiddling the knobs, for want of a more elegant phrase?

Iam64 is still unable to post, despite having repeatedly followed the instructions HQ have given her - largely of the the ‘have you tried turning it off and on again?’ variety that are often given to doddery old dears who are assumed not to know anything about technology (which Iam does). How hard can it be?

Assigning an edit button is usually one of the admin options in the control panel, with options such as ‘allow for 5 minutes’, as are many of our requests.

If there is a reason why HQ don’t want us to have these fairly basic facilities, why don’t they just explain? I’m sure we would understand.

Doodledog Tue 10-Aug-21 10:15:10

See, if we had an edit button the thread of IT could be promoted to Head, whether she’s there on work experience or not ?

Lillie Tue 10-Aug-21 10:41:04

aw kali2 that is a heartfelt post and i do understand

i dont know you as well as some on here but as i understand it you came to the uk from europe and now live back in maybe france

you like to post opinions on the uk which is interesting and of course allowed even if from a distance

i too am a sort of half foreigner too
jewish not born in england
the uk saved my family and i will be eternally grateful to it for providing the best education and lifestyle for my family
i have hopefully contributed a tiny bit to the country which gave my family so much

i see many imperfections in the uk and do get frustrated but i refuse to constantly bash it
its government is fair game to criticise but not so many of the other institutions and traditions

maybe that is an explanation for the different posts you receive from your different comments

i really dont know but i hope you can end this or one of the other threads you are on on a happier note

Yours is a heartfelt post too, Lillie and I feel proud that we, as a country, were able to help you and your family.

What a sensible attitude…..

Doodledog Tue 10-Aug-21 12:05:06

Oh, that explains a lot.

I am oblivious to a lot of the 'politics' on here, and a bit baffled when I see references to undercurrents that other people know all about, but even I have noticed that whatever Kali2 posts is picked on. I think I've queried this before when I saw it happen on a thread and was bewildered by it.

There may well be a backstory of which I am unaware, so I won't keep digging, but the unpleasantness is very noticeable.

Chewbacca Tue 10-Aug-21 12:30:25

Lillie your post at 10.41 was one of the nicest, kindest and most pragmatic post I've read in a long time. I'm so glad that your family found GB to be a safe haven, where a good life and future could be built; that you recognise the positives here and don't focus on the negatives. Such a refreshing change from the usual bashing we see. Thank you.

I agree. Very nasty to witness, and then when the victim announced she was leaving there were all sorts of sneery comments. Not one of GNs finest moments, and there were a few women who should be ashamed of themselves, but won't be I expect. The person concerned was very kind to me when I was targeted once, she knew how I felt.

FarNorth Tue 10-Aug-21 13:12:29

I've not seen the bullying spoken of here and I'm very sorry to hear that it has been happening.
Even if there is any sort of 'backstory' that's no excuse for nastiness.

I'd say that if someone can't make an opposing point, without being nasty, they must be quite stupid.

growstuff Tue 10-Aug-21 13:19:46

I've witnessed it too. There was an example within the last couple of days. The poster(s) involved in the bullying really does seem to lead a sad life.

kittylester Tue 10-Aug-21 13:35:16

I do think that allegations of bullying are exaggerated.

I also think lillie's post is very good.

Thank you. The problem is the people concerned are careful not to be blatant, just lots of little questions, designed to poke at the victim, but not really obvious to anyone glancing at the thread. Reporting someone for asking if you live in the UK, for example, sounds pathetic, but if this is the reply to every post you make, constantly undermining your opinion on everything, dismissing you as irrelevant as 'you don't live in the UK I think?' well, that is very different. For example.

growstuff Tue 10-Aug-21 13:49:20

GillT57 I'm glad I'm not the only person who's spotted that. It's relentless, which qualifies as bullying.

Galaxy Tue 10-Aug-21 14:18:04

Yes it's not pleasant.
