Hi all

We think that it'd be good for us to get to know each other a bit more.

We at GNHQ are here to moderate the site, look after our users and ensure that Gransnet is an inclusive and supportive community. We're post-moderated, which means that we rely on reports to let us know what's going on. Our aim is to respond to every query we receive, so please don't be afraid to get in touch.

We're also keen to listen to feedback about site functionality, so tell us what you think - we'll always pass feedback on to the relevant team(s) for discussion, with the promise of making Gransnet better and more efficient for all users. If you've got any ideas for improvement then please share them below. Changes at the back end of the site do take time, but we're more than happy to keep you updated during the process.

Please feel free to introduce yourselves by replying below (or send us a hello privately via email/report if you prefer).

P.S Every time you hit the report button, an angel gets its wings (or a troll gets booted off site). <repeatedly clicks report button>

Hi all - just to let you know that we'll be going through the thread to pick out some of the best suggestions for features and improvements.

We are asking in good faith - some of the team at HQ are new to the Gransnet community so it really is a chance to say hello and make some suggestions.

Having said that, we'll be removing some of the posts that refer to old fallouts/bans/threads - feel free to email us about any issues but this thread isn't the best place for them.

As always, if you have any concerns about a post or poster then please report - we're always fine to take a look.

FarNorth Tue 10-Aug-21 17:08:02

Hi Soniagransnet.
The reason for meandering into chit chat about other topics was, I think, that there seemed to be no interest from GNHQ in our actual suggestions (as usual).

So now you've got to know us as a bunch of grumpy grans on this thread.

FannyCornforth Tue 10-Aug-21 17:24:30

Well put FarNorth, thank you.
We are a lovely lot in the main, honest! smile

And thereby stands the problem we are such little old ladies that we cannot possible sort ourselves out and ‘need’ a grown up to look out for us
Head in hands ?

MerylStreep Tue 10-Aug-21 19:02:52

? that exactly ???

Galaxy Tue 10-Aug-21 19:05:10

Well no its nothing to do with age it's to do with being on an internet forum where you cant have a situation of anything goes.

I thought this thread was about suggestions for improving the site ??

Where are the replies to those suggestions?

BlueBelle Tue 10-Aug-21 19:09:56

I don’t go on Mumsnet so don’t know do they get such micro managing ?

Galaxy Tue 10-Aug-21 19:13:31

It's much more problematic on Mn because its involved in some very contentious discussions and have people posting the discussions on Twitter, etc. The rules are therefore much stricter on MN in my view.

kittylester Tue 10-Aug-21 19:15:38

I suggest that GNHQ try not to be taken in by cliques complaining about cliques. It's just plain silly. FGS we are grown women!!!!!

kittylester Tue 10-Aug-21 19:19:27

I would suggest that, if there is one 'secret world' that there must be two.

One of my pet hates is people who are not honest and come back with 'clandestine' names, the same posting style but try changing their 'background'.

We may be grown women, but if people are being banned from posting because of board politics it's not a level playing field. Those wielding the banning axe need to know what is happening if they don't monitor the boards.

I never have a clue about cliques or what's going on as regards so-called 'bullying' and I'm on here several times a week, so if HQ wait for a report they will just be getting a snapshot of any interaction. Also, if lurkers are able to comment on contributors and get them banned, the system is never going to be fair.

Personally, I'd rather we were left to our own devices other than if something is posted that could make GN liable to prosecution, but if people are going to be banned for their behaviour towards other posters then I don't think it's silly for all sides to want to be heard.

Yes!

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 20:14:10

And that as well, Doodledog

Some must have their finger on the report button frequently otherwise GNHQ would not know about this, therefore if someone has a grudge then they could be influential in getting another person banned even if they themselves are not above suspicion.

kittylester Tue 10-Aug-21 20:17:32

GNHQ shouldn't be taken in by the number of Reports. That went badly wrong when they (and a few posters were taken in by a tr**l poster.

I realise that it makes me sound like an old fuddy duddy but we need lighter, more objective rather than reactive, moderation.

Galaxy Tue 10-Aug-21 20:18:54

But everyone has a different opinion of what that moderation should be, that's why it's difficult.

I have to agree here. I wonder how many reports are made by posters holding a grudge against a particular poster, with the intention of getting them banned.

I sometimes feel the moderation is inconsistent, it depends on who reads the report, their experience, their interpretation of what has been posted and underlying issues HQ are unaware of. At least in a court of law, you are given the opportunity to defend yourself.

Some posters are very subtle and clever in their bullying, making sure they don't post anything contentious enough to warrant a warning.

JaneJudge Tue 10-Aug-21 20:38:50

I've felt a bit picked on over the last few weeks too on various threads and I always try and be fair

MerylStreep Tue 10-Aug-21 21:01:20

The problem being that the accusee will only receive the interpretation that HQ puts on the accusation.
They have no true right of reply.

Galaxy Tue 10-Aug-21 21:02:53

I love your posts Jane if that's any help but I am a bit odd grin

NanKate Tue 10-Aug-21 21:20:33

What a faff it is to embolden a user name, those stars at the beginning and end ?

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 22:12:30

Galaxy

Would we be on GN if we weren't?

???

BlueBelle Tue 10-Aug-21 22:27:30

Oh what a blooming pickle
I hate all this reporting behind peoples back it feels like little kids running to the teacher If someone says something you don’t like, talk it through never go running to mother to sort out
I think it’s totally awful and I think it’s wrong that GN moderators encourage this back stabbing anonymous reporting

DillytheGardener Tue 10-Aug-21 22:27:38

I enjoy your posts too JaneJudge, they are always, pragmatic, reasonable and empathetic.

DillytheGardener Tue 10-Aug-21 22:32:24

NanKate I do find it a faff on my phone as I’m dyslexic and use predictive text. When I try to put a star ahead of the name, it then flags it as incorrect spelling which makes it hard to then add in the last star.
It’s a also a pain as it doesn’t actually tag the person, so unless they go back and check new messages on the thread they won’t know if they have been mentioned.
