The influence of Gransnet Daily

(239 Posts)

It is an interesting phenomenon how the mention of a thread as the title feature of Gransnet Daily often results in a massive increase in posts to a thread.

For example, today the thread

www.gransnet.com/forums/relationships/1301027-How-is-a-mother-in-law-addressed

is the title feature and lots of new posts have appeared.

Music is a personal and subjective preference and there you go again, naming and promoting the multi-billion dollar company that you chose to curate your listening. Yes, please stop trying to draw attention to yourself. It's wearying.

You really think GN would have that kind of sponsor? Naive in the extreme.

EP I think that your thread about sponsored discussions has gone

I have just checked. It is still there. Two posts thus far.

One reply actually and you can draw your own conclusions from what it is
The other is your own Original Post

Yes, you’re right. It’s not the place for ‘us’ to post though

Why not?

If someone suggests a sponsored discussion then it might perhaps happen.

It is a thread in the Site stuff section. It is about the site.

Two sayings that I bear in mind..

Always say what you would like to happen - if you say what you would like then people know and you might get it.

Do not grumble away your opportunities.

I think that you might be teaching grandmothers how to suck (Tesco) eggs again EP!

Yes, music is a personal and subjective preference.

No, YouTube does not curate my listening.

YouTube provides, at no cost to me, lots of videos for me to watch if I choose to do so. Yes, there are advertisements and, unlike ITV where the rule is that advertisements are in natural breaks the YouTube adverts do sometimes happen mid-sentence. There is a facility to skip most of each advert, but I do watch some all the way through as there are some interesting adverts sometimes.

Putting a link to a YouTube video is I suppose promoting them as someone following a link that i post may get an advert, but that is like someone recommending a television programme that is broadcast on ITV, or mentioning a grocery product. I mentioned some grocery products in a thread about IBS to try to help someone: was that wrong of me?

I don't understand why you are singling me out with an allegation of trying to draw attention to myself, lots of people post on Gransnet.

If anyone posts to Gransnet he or she is ipso facto drawing attention to themself.

Why are you picking on me?

Would you rather I did not post at all?

I have only just noticed the unanswered button after all these years on here. Every day is a school day.

I am not sure what that emoji is about?

Perhaps I should try to think of a sponsored thread that I would like.

FannyCornforth Mon 20-Sept-21 09:48:45

The emoji is showing a person shrugging their shoulders, with palms upwards.
It means ‘I’ve no idea’, or ‘who cares’, or ‘I’m baffled’.
That’s my interpretation, anyway

Oh.

Well either I did, or it has been moved. I am not sure.

If I did that I am surprised, but maybe I got in a muddle.

MayBeMaw Mon 20-Sept-21 09:50:50

?‍♀️ ?‍♂️ ?
I am guessing a shrug of the shoulders indicates “Whatever”

JaneJudge Mon 20-Sept-21 09:57:11

I don't understand where you have all got your emojis from. I have a very select amount down there and that's it

Did you really feel the need to inform us of the Delia effect, really?

Yes, I suppose I did.

It is an effect long known, widely known, and it seems to me to be structurally similar to the effect of a thread being named as the title thread in Gransnet Daily.

I have no problem over doing that. It seems to me to be a relevant thing to do.

I think MerylStreep might have been gently pointing out that we are more than perfectly aware of it - teaching granny to suck eggs? .

Silverbridge Mon 20-Sept-21 10:17:08

I am not picking on you, EP but I think you can see from the responses here that people are becoming exasperated. I'm respectfully asking that you rein it in a bit.

You have a history of this, taking a germ of an idea and going completely overboard with it. You did it a few weeks back with the French threads. You could have just started one thread with a simple title where people could have chatted in the language but you started another and another and another until it became a confusing mess and everyone walked away.

There is a line between posting a link to some useful and germane information and beating a drum for your own agenda.

You draw the comparion between others mentioning a TV show and what you do. They mention one show and people discuss it. You flood the boards with links to your preferred listening. Here's another link to ... Here's another link to ... Here's another link to ... As I said before, it's tantamount to spamming and using GN to promote another platform.

I’ll put this gently.
Delia Smith started her career in the early 70s.
A good many of us on this site would have been young married women, running a home and cooking
We would have seen and heard Delia on the tv/ radio.
Do you seriously think that the women on this site have missed her spectacular rise in fame and not known how she has influenced us
I’ll stop there as I can feel the other MerylStreep coming out.

You questioned my integrity. I defended myself.

Was it you who reported the French threads and spoilt it all? The result that the two threads for Italian and the two threads for Slovenian never got started, so nobody got to enjoy them and learn.

The thread all in French and the thread where a discussion in English took place was very effective. There was a pair of threads for a specialist activity. A fifth thread was added after a request. I think it was great. But it was grumble and thud and it got spoilt and the two threads per language style had to be abandoned, so the alternative would be one all over the place thread rather than an elegantly structured ambience, so on the basis that one cannot run in treacle I gave up. Because of grumble and thud.

You seemed pleased with my ideas about the audio book group.

I suppose that that will be crashed out now due to grumble and thud.

So I mentioned the Delia effect.

If you already knew of it then it was a good analogy to link from something new being discussed to something well-known as a good way to produce understanding.

FannyCornforth Mon 20-Sept-21 11:06:16

I thought that you’d lost interest in the thread about The Machine Stops EP
I doubt very much that Silverbridge reported your French threads

toscalily Mon 20-Sept-21 11:13:37

Silverbridge I think EP secretly enjoys winding GNetters up with long tedious posts with threads about threads and an endless stream of links on "whatever"and then pretends to get all huffy because as you so rightly say, we get exasperated.

Blossoming Mon 20-Sept-21 11:14:19

I get the daily email from GN and I do click on the links if it looks like something that may interest me. Some of you appear to think that makes me inferior. I don’t give a flying fig grin. #RebelGran
