The influence of Gransnet Daily

(239 Posts)

It is an interesting phenomenon how the mention of a thread as the title feature of Gransnet Daily often results in a massive increase in posts to a thread.

For example, today the thread

www.gransnet.com/forums/relationships/1301027-How-is-a-mother-in-law-addressed

is the title feature and lots of new posts have appeared.

By the way

www.gransnet.com/forums/sponsored_discussions/1301119-What-sponsored-discussion-would-you-like-Gransnet-to-have

has been deleted. I self-reported as upthread somewhere it became apparent to me that it was in the wrong section.

Some of the best minds in the world have Aspergers EP nothing at all to think twice about

I pointed out to you that we didn’t need educating as to who Delia Smith is and her influence.
Now you’ve done it again with your link to autism and Aspergers.
Could you give some thought, for your own sake ? that most posters will be very aware, even have members of their family with these conditions so therefore don’t need you to educate them. Just think about your links ie, would most people know this. Chances are: most posters on GN do ?

True BlueBelle and Sir Anthony Hopkins, Courtney Love, Susan Boyle, Dan Ackroyd, Andy Warhol and Darryl Hannah.
I wonder what the medical term is for those people who, when seeing that someone is clearly struggling to explain themselves, just can't resist putting the boot in by making snarky, unkind remarks to make someone feel even more awkward?

BlueBelle Mon 20-Sept-21 19:52:19

I actually don’t like your post merylstreep why can’t the guy post links everyone else does, you don’t have to read them after all I chose which ones to read and which ones not

Galaxy Mon 20-Sept-21 20:08:20

Thanks Chewbacca I didnt know about Antony Hopkins.

The way that I look at it is that it is better to mention something and include a link on the basis that some readers might not know of something, even though many may.

Better twice than not at all.

I went to an exhibition about network computing in around 1990 knowing hardly anything about it and wanting to learn.

People seemed very reticent to tell me anything.

So I said to the man on one stand "I don't know much about this. I'm here to try to learn, I'm not the sort of person who gets annoyed if you tell me something I already know".

That unlocked the problem. The man then told me lots for quite a while and we had a good conversation, and if I already knew some bit I was diplomatic about it.

I tried that at other stands and it worked wonders.

Some people, lots apparently, get annoyed if someone explains something and they already know it. But it is very difficult for someone there to advise where to pitch if the advisor does not know the enquirer's existing level of knowledge. It varies greatly.

So, if someone reading this thread already knows of the Delia effect, fine.

If someone already knows about Asperger's syndrome, fine.

Them seeing the link is not patronising, telling grannies about sucking eggs and so on, it is just being thorough in making a post. Because some readers might not know.

I do that just to get on the site, it would be great if gn had a app like mn

Please stop Elderly Person. I’m a lurker and shouldn’t watch. But you’re making me feel quite ill. Your posts disturb me.

BlueBelle Mon 20-Sept-21 22:59:34

Karen that’s dammed rude

Chewbacca Mon 20-Sept-21 23:06:41

Karen1959 Your post disturbs me and makes me feel quite ill for a whole host of reasons; the main one being your astounding rudeness and bad manners.

Karen1959 Mon 20-Sept-21 23:34:22

BlueBelle. I’m not a rude person. Sorry if you took offence. I’ll go back to lurking.

fatgran57 Mon 20-Sept-21 23:41:37

I don't think that Karen1959 meant to be so rude - she was very blunt however.

I do find EP is quite intense but we do not have to read his posts if they disturb us in any way.

He does appear to be a really decent person with not much contact at the moment with face to face conversations so is talking to us on here instead.

Kindest wishes to all.

Karen1959 Mon 20-Sept-21 23:53:14

I’m truly sorry. I did come across as blunt but I’m not an unkind person. I feel very ashamed and I will be more careful in future. EPs posts and reactions just triggered me. I’m sorry.

FannyCornforth Tue 21-Sept-21 07:22:29

If it helps EP, I don’t understand why most of the deleted posts were deleted either.

BlueBelle Tue 21-Sept-21 08:27:20

Maybe it would be nice to apologise to EP himself Karen not the thread
Just because EP has a different style of posting doesn’t make him a person to get mad at If his style annoys you walk on by There’s room on the forum for all of us Not everyone understands or uses the type of humour or banter displayed on here and surely there’s room for everyone
I m sure your not a harsh person Karen so let’s start again
FC I ve no idea what guidelines I crossed in my deleted post as I wasn’t being rude to anyone on this thread

FannyCornforth Tue 21-Sept-21 08:37:28

I know BlueBelle.
As you’ve said before yourself, I’ve got quite a good memory, and I can pretty much remember who said what, and as far as the deletions on here are concerned, I’m baffled.

I agree too about Karen -
Karen, I do think that you should say something, or ask for your comment to be removed.

FannyCornforth Tue 21-Sept-21 08:58:11

In retrospect, EP, I think that your threads were removed due to them each containing several links to You Tube videos.

Galaxy Tue 21-Sept-21 09:25:23

But why would that be? Lots of threads have links to the guardian or the times etc or Sky news say, they are all businesses in the same way YouTube is.

FannyCornforth Tue 21-Sept-21 09:33:48

Hi Galaxy, I reckon it was an ‘executive decision’.
The (many) links were wholly irrelevant to the discussion, and as a poster suggested, possibly tantamount to spamming.

Mollygo Tue 21-Sept-21 09:35:54

Might be the number of links. If they don’t check them, it looks like a list of links all relating to the same heading, in this case YouTube.

Galaxy Tue 21-Sept-21 09:48:58

Oh thanks. I realised as I said it I only have a vague concept of how You tube works. Dont know who its ownerd by, is it owned in the true sense of the word? Sometimes I find that kind of thing quite scary to think about, but am wittering now.

nanna8 Tue 21-Sept-21 10:11:49

Will someone please tell me what the Delia affect is ? I don’t really know who she is but assume she wrote cookbooks.
Talking about people on the spectrum of Aspergers, anyone watch that brilliant actress on The Bridge ? Scandi version. Saga something. I just love her and everyone I know likes to watch that just because of her .
