I popped out to give the dog a quick walk and when I returned it was gone.

????

It says

“ Thread deleted
Message from GNHQ: Hi all

We're sorry but we don't feel that this thread is in the spirit of the site - we're taking it down now. “

merlotgran Thu 11-Nov-21 12:07:23

We're no longer allowed to comment on something that's being reported in the News?

Censorship is in the spirit of the site? shock

eazybee Thu 11-Nov-21 12:08:39

Yes I noticed it had disappeared and I too would like an explanation. What is not on the spirit of the site?
Criticising Megan Markle?
If so, why?
No attempt is made to stop the endless criticism of Boris Johnson.

Or Prince Andrew.

Chewbacca Thu 11-Nov-21 12:20:07

Somebody must have reported it and complained merlotgran. I've seen a few posts very recently where people are openly saying what should and should not be discussed. Censorship.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 11-Nov-21 12:21:37

Flipping thread police, all over GN like a bluddy rash…

LilyGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 11-Nov-21 12:29:57

Hi all

The thread was deleted because the tone of it wasn't in the spirit of the site.

We absolutely don't mind fair criticism or discussing stories that are in the news, but if a thread reads like a personal attack against one particular person, we will remove it.

Galaxy Thu 11-Nov-21 12:34:03

I was joking about Judi Dench grin

merlotgran Thu 11-Nov-21 12:47:21

What personal attacks?

merlotgran Thu 11-Nov-21 12:53:16

I’m really disappointed in HQ. Discussions will always be one sided if they allow the opinions of reporters to dictate whether or not a thread is in the spirit of the site when the same people are never backwards at coming forwards when it comes to their own comments.

Shinamae Thu 11-Nov-21 12:56:15

I had my thread about NHS staff not being vaccinated deleted which I thought was unfair but they said the anti-vaxers were getting on it(they didn’t say that in so many words but that’s what they meant )and I said that the pro vaxers were all over them. Now I expect this will be deleted as it’s a thread about a thread..?

Chewbacca Thu 11-Nov-21 12:56:41

Wish I'd seen it before it was zapped. Any clues of the subject matter?

Oldwoman70 Thu 11-Nov-21 13:02:08

I have often disagreed with comments by other GNs, particularly on the politics threads, but we are all adults and do not need to be "protected" by GNHQ. I understand if an individual comment is deleted for being offensive but not the deletion of an entire thread.

Meghan bingo.

?

merlotgran Thu 11-Nov-21 13:04:33

Chewbacca, I started a thread asking if Meghan might be losing support because she is now saying she ‘forgot’ that she’d instructed an aide to feed information to the authors of Finding Freedom. This has been reported by Tom Bradby, who is one of her supporters.

Chewbacca Thu 11-Nov-21 13:06:13

Ah, ok. Not a topic I'm personally interested in but still sorry the subject apparently isn't up for discussion.

Alegrias1 Thu 11-Nov-21 13:06:54

I do worry.

So many people don't seem to appreciate the difference between "disagreement" and "character assassination based on gossip."

Funny old world (and no, it wasn't me smile)

edith55 Thu 11-Nov-21 13:09:22

Someone has got to moderate the site, and I am relieved that there is moderation. Nastiness and extreme views blossom unfortunately in our time, people feel the right to be poisonous. I don't agree with all of the moderators choices, but at least they are trying to be fair.
Incidentally many of the threads are about exactly this, trying to moderate relationships in our families.

Smileless2012 Thu 11-Nov-21 13:09:28

I assume it was commenting on her apologising to the court for misleading it with regard to the letter she wrote to her father that was subsequently made public.

If my assumption's right, what's wrong with that GNHQ? I think a more detailed account of why it has been deleted is needed. There are numerous posts and threads critical of someone in the public eye, what was different about this one?

Your opinion clearly holds a lot of weight, Alegrias

Gransnet discussions used to be more balanced.

Alegrias1 Thu 11-Nov-21 13:12:53

I didn't report it. I rarely report. I left when people started accusing me of trying to monitor the thread.

I did report someone this morning for saying a public figure was a paedophile.

Is that allowed?

Calistemon Thu 11-Nov-21 13:18:51

I didn't see the thread but in fact this subject has been widely reported in the press and on TV news so why GNHQ think it is not a subject for discussion is surprising.

Galaxy Thu 11-Nov-21 13:19:07

You cant have an unmoderated site, I have many concerns with regard to social media about who gets to make those decisions, but GN is operating within the society we currently have.

maddyone Thu 11-Nov-21 13:22:19

I agree with you Smileless. There are countless threads criticising other people, usually politicians, but sometimes other public figures, and they are not deleted. Some of the comments I’ve read about politicians are quite disgraceful in my opinion, but the threads are not deleted. Gransnet are basically saying that criticism of the Duchess of Sussex is not allowed, but criticism of others is acceptable. That type of censorship is really not acceptable because it tends to suggest that those in GHNQ are partisan and only allow criticism of those they feel are deserving of criticism.
