A platform for news, views and comments this Wimbledon fortnight.

Andy - how far will he get?
Who will be the most annoying presenter(s)?
Any Brits to look out for?
Anyone here going?

And not forgetting Lucca, who loved the game and the Championship🌻.

Delighted for Paolini, but that match — although high drama — was not exactly high quality.

There were some great shots, of course, but overall….

DamaskRose Thu 11-Jul-24 16:36:34

I was rooting for Jasmine Paolini but still heartbroken for Donna Vekic.

merlotgran Thu 11-Jul-24 16:38:38

I love Jasmine Paolini’s joyous attitude. What a great match.

merlotgran

I love Jasmine Paolini’s joyous attitude. What a great match.

Me too. I’ve held my breath throughout!

Alie2Oxon Thu 11-Jul-24 16:52:45

Oh wow. On the edge of my seat.
I didn't intend to start watching - haven't watched for several years... but have been looking for Paulini since two rounds back!

bridie54 Thu 11-Jul-24 19:23:23

Better go get some work done now.
Super pleased for Barbora though the match wasn’t as watchable as the first.

DamaskRose Thu 11-Jul-24 19:32:39

So pleased for Barbora but now who will I support in the final!!! 😳

I really enjoyed watching Paolini scampering about the court and looking as if she was thoroughly enjoying herself. She reminds me a bit, in her court presence, of Yvonne Goolagong or Maria Bueno as I dimly recall.

Shame the second semi started on quite a muted note, with lots of empty seats, but pleased to see it picked up once the toilet and snack breaks were completed.

Did you see that the ballboys' role of towel handlers, stopped during Covid, is to be reinstated after Wimbledon? Something to do with it being a rush for the players with the introduction of new timing rules between points, in addition to their having a snack and selecting their balls of choice etc. Will cut out the walking ...

Apologies for the dreadful phrase ballkids 😔😔

It will be lovely if the two Singles’ trophies are lifted by the two Italians - Lorenzo Musseti and Jasmine Paulino. šŸ†

Hear, hear, TillyTrotter.
Both lovely.

Djokovics
I presume Novak is trying to soften the dour personality he adopts on the court, with TV footage of him playing with both of his children and 'hitting' with his young son who looks to be already in full command of his racket. In another 10 years or so, we might be seeing Djokovic2 in Junior Wimbledon. I doubt if this will thaw his relationship with the spectators, but at least his kids are enjoying themselves with dad.

Re commentators. Tracy Austin talks skills and tactics, unlike most of them who tell us the ble**ing obvious. Annabel Croft is totally at the top of the commentating team. Give her the biggest job!!
BUT PLEASE BBC!!...tell Clare Balding to stop shrieking and shouting and Sam Smith to stop her inane muttering and whispering.

TillyTrotter Fri 12-Jul-24 13:23:36

It seems when you’re hot you’re in demand as a TV commentator/ presenter.
Clare Balding has presented Horse Racing (she was a rider), Crufts, Olympics, Paralympics and now Wimbledon.
She wouldn’t have been in my top 5 for replacing Sue Barker.
Sue didn’t shriek, but had a good sense of humour and knew Tennis inside out.

TillyTrotter Fri 12-Jul-24 13:24:21

By the way I don’t dislike Clare, but think she is better suited to Horse Racing and Equestrian events.

MayBee70 Fri 12-Jul-24 14:09:22

It isn’t easy being a link person on tv programmes. When Clare left horse racing she commentated on rugby league and DH tells me everyone was very impressed with her knowledge. Another person that gets a lot of criticism is Rishi Persad and I think he’s wonderful.

Daniil Medvedev gets a warning, "violation for un sportsmanlike conduct", says the umpire. (BBC Website).

Grr, left the room!
Any idea what happened?

He may have sworn at the umpire.

J52 Fri 12-Jul-24 16:52:59

I agree Sam Smith whispers and mutters, it drives me mad!
Well done Alcaraz! Now waiting for the second semi.
Not much house work done today šŸ˜‚

glammagran Fri 12-Jul-24 17:03:46

Blimey I’ve just seen Lorenzo Musetti come onto the centre court. Haven’t seen him before. Was he a male model before playing tennis? 😜

Callistemon213 Fri 12-Jul-24 17:26:40

He beat Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals, glammagran
How have you missed him? 😁

DamaskRose Fri 12-Jul-24 17:30:16

Quite a few of the commentators have annoyed me this year - I must be getting more intolerant in my old age! And Clare Balding, who is good in other settings, just isn’t the right person for the job. I do like Annabelle Croft.
Can’t call it in the women’s final, like them both. Anybody but Djokovic in the men’s. I know he’s a great player but just don’t like him - probably says more about me than him!

Nannylovesshopping Fri 12-Jul-24 19:01:53

Are you watching, Musetti playing his heart out, fabulous player, please please beat Djokovic!

ixion Fri 12-Jul-24 19:04:28

Hear, hear!
But it's not looking good, is it?

Callistemon213 Fri 12-Jul-24 19:10:30

I AM SO FED UP WITH THE BBC!

Sorry to shout but
"You can continue to watch this match on BBC2"
a while later
"It's set point! You can continue to watch this match on BBC1"

Millie22 Fri 12-Jul-24 19:24:48

I so want to trip Djokovic up!

He is everywhere on the court.
