A platform for news, views and comments this Wimbledon fortnight.

Andy - how far will he get?
Who will be the most annoying presenter(s)?
Any Brits to look out for?
Anyone here going?

And not forgetting Lucca, who loved the game and the Championship🌻.

I have had to 'mute' - bloody Andrew Castle and his inane commentary is spoiling this match for me.

Callistemon213 Fri 12-Jul-24 19:27:12

Oh, what is going on???

MayBee70 Fri 12-Jul-24 20:03:16

I wish I could enjoy watching Djokovic. I know he’s a brilliant player. But I don’t. I think it goes back to him doing a bit of gamesmanship years ago when playing against Andy Murray.

Callistemon213 Fri 12-Jul-24 20:04:23

Ok Djokovic, so you won! You're in the final.
Now pay a tribute to your opponent who fought so hard and did so well.
Musetti will be back.

Nannylovesshopping Fri 12-Jul-24 20:08:08

Ah but he didn’t, just played his bloody violin!

Yes, but both Musetti and Alcaraz will be playing after Djokovic has retired.

The violin is for his daughter Tara.

ixion Fri 12-Jul-24 20:11:46

That bloody violin and whipping up the crowd.
Ghastly chap.

I switched off immediately after the game ended so I don’t know what happened. Just can’t stand him.

Smileless2012 Fri 12-Jul-24 20:19:23

Couldn't watch him so had the tv on in the other room to keep up with the score.

My dislike of him goes back even further than that MayBee to when he'd beaten Greg Rudetsky at Wimbledon. Greg was always smiling and when he beat him he said 'I bet that wiped the smile off his face'.

Never liked him since.

The violin is for his daughter Tara.

Why?

He'll be back commentating for the BBC.

The violin is for his daughter Tara.

Why?

Because she has just started to learn to play.

ixion Fri 12-Jul-24 22:25:31

Still don't get itšŸ¤”.
Has he promised her one if he wins?
šŸ˜‰

Callistemon213 Fri 12-Jul-24 22:33:15

Oh, clever.
It could also be interpreted as an insult to the man he has just beaten.

tickingbird Sat 13-Jul-24 05:42:01

Sorry, I just don’t like him. He’s a brilliant player but a nasty piece of work. I think the violin is less a tribute to his daughter and more a dig at the crowd who he knows don’t like him. Musetti’s tennis was so stylish and a pleasure to watch. Djokovic is a robot.

I’ll have everything crossed for Carlos on Sunday.

Agree 100%. Also, I do not believe he had surgery on his knee or he could not possibly be leaping around the court like a gazelle. It’s another of his sneaky tactics to make his opponents think he’s playing with an injury, and an excuse to fall back on should he lose.

As for the violin playing, if anyone believes that cringeworthy display is for his daughter they don’t know how he operates.

That nonsense in the Rune match shows how immature he is. Whether or not the crowd was booing he should not have risen to the bait as he just looked like a little kid running to the teacher to tell her ā€˜Miss, they’re being mean to me’ instead of ignoring it and moving on,

As you can guess, I’m not a fan!šŸ˜‚

Callistemon213 Sat 13-Jul-24 07:28:36

It was reported that Djokovic had keyhole surgery to repair a torn meniscus.
It does seem to be a very short period of time to be playing high level sport again as it is recommended that sport should not be played for 3-6 months afterwards.

Sparklefizz Sat 13-Jul-24 10:10:18

I can't stand Djokovic. His attitude - his arrogance - his gamesmanship - all that bouncing of the ball before a serve. He does more bouncing if the game's not going well for him. Grrr. Totally unnecessary.

He's a brilliant player but unlikeable in my view. He is not a generous winner.

I hope he gets beaten in the final. C'mon Alcaraz.

tickingbird Sat 13-Jul-24 11:01:52

He’s awful. His on court interview reminiscing about being a boy dreaming of being on centre court whilst cowering as the bombs rained down. Making a replica Men’s trophy out of cardboard. All designed to provoke sympathy for this brave man who’s succeeded against the odds.

The cupping of the ear when he’s pulled off a great shot; basically demanding the crowd acknowledge his brilliance. He’s arrogant and nasty when things don’t go his way. His petulant behaviour after the Rune match showed his lack of self awareness. He really does think he’s disliked because he’s so good; nothing to do with his behaviour.

If it looks like he’s about to win tomorrow I’ll switch off as can’t stand looking at his smugness.

I see the Princess of Wales is planning to attend tomorrow. I do hope it's one of her 'good' days, especially as William will be in Berlin.
I wonder who will 'buddy' her? Her sister, maybe?

I really should be gardening this afternoon butā€¦šŸ˜‚

Mini magnums in the freezer.

Oh hell! Sam Smith is already mumbling and muttering! Why? Ash Barty and Macca are speaking up well. Is it because Ms Smith was such a mediocre player back in her (brief) day, she hasn't the confidence/excellence of her co-commentators?

I think it might be her two eldest children.

Come on Paolini. This is more like it.
