I really would love to wear black leggings under a knee length dress, but don't know whether, at 59 years old, I'd look like 'mutton dressed up as lamb'!!!!! What do you think? Does anyone else wear them? confused

I do! You have to get the shoes /boots right too though.

Leggings under a dress/skirt are fine - go for it.

You too old when you're dead, 'cos then you don't need to stay warm!

Any age is fine, I wore leggings with long boots until the jumper I wore with them got washed in a hot wash and shrank. Never been able to replace it sadly.

nannyliz, go for it! Leggings with a skirt or with a long tunic look great. It's the legs that make the difference wink! Seriously though, you can 'tweak' the fashion to suit yourself, but it's not the leggings bit that'll need tweaking.

Legging should not be worn by anyone over the age of 10. They are an invention of the devil.

I agree Baggy its not the age its the legs and if your legs are good then why not. If your legs are good but veiny they cover em up. If not sure, wear with boots. They emphasise the ankles.
I wear them all the time. With flat slip ons. With trainers. With walking boots. anything flat. With anything that covers my bum. So pleased they are back in fashion because they are so comfortable. Bliss. And the tunic skims any bulges in the middle.
Leggings with things that don't cover bum - only if very obviously taking exercise! Although DH would think this an OK look anywhere.
I am just trying to think - do they work with big boobs? I think the answer is yes, as long as top is not loose, shapeless and baggy. Needs some styling and definition around the bust or could look like a mushroom?
I do miss Trinny and Susannah...

pompa, don't be silly, darling! What's the essential difference between leggings and black stockings? I'll answer that — comfort for the wearer.

susiecb Mon 08-Aug-11 08:29:35

I would say its more a matter of how it looks rather than age. I prefer black opaque tights myself but then I am a butterball!

Gally Mon 08-Aug-11 09:10:04

I would love to be able to wear leggings under a long tunic/dress but alas I don't have the right shape legs although the bum is ok. I hate seeing women waddling down the High Street with a grotty T shirt over their endless spare tyres and large beer bottle legs bulging out underneath; however, worn with the correct bits and pieces I reckon they're ok for some ladies smile

pompa Mon 08-Aug-11 09:12:30

Baggy you are quite right - there is little difference - black stockings are also the work of the devil (except black fishnet stockings of course, another devil is at work there smile)

Nannyliz, make sure the legging you buy are good quality and don't go all
loose at the knee's Sainsbury's do a good pair in their Tu range and M+S do
a pair that fit nice,I've worn them for year's but as the other girls say you must wear the correct boots or shoe's.

I enjoy wearing black leggings - I wouldn't wear coloured ones! - with over the hip tunics but I must admit I don't go out in them as I feel a bit self conscious. The older I get the more daring I become so this I might take the plunge and wear them out with boots. We shall see........

jangly Mon 08-Aug-11 10:18:02

They would cover up the varicose veins.

JessM Mon 08-Aug-11 10:22:16

I got some nice stretchy ones in Gap this week. Too much cotton and they go very wrinkly...

jangly Mon 08-Aug-11 10:32:11

They might be a bit hot round the botty way though.

glammanana Mon 08-Aug-11 10:56:10

Remember with legging's best to alway's buy a size smaller and golden make
sure your boot's are not to high or you will get the "here's my head the ????
is following" sort of effect x

I'm 57 and wear leggings with boots or ballet type pumps topped with over the hip sweaters or tunics. They are so practical and comfy I don't really give a fig what other people think!

Parkgater Mon 08-Aug-11 15:23:13

Personally I prefer cropped black trousers to leggings as I 'm tall & find that leggings descend during the day & drive me mad!!I remember the leggings & baggy T shirt brigade that used to wait at the school gates.. lazy lazy form of dressing.
Leggings or black cropped trousers with a nice frock or tunic with smart shoes is fine.

Leggings on their own with just a short top – maximum age 7. Under a dress/long tunic thingy is different. Still depends on size and state of legs – otherwise, you can end up looking like a black pudding.

MrsJamJam Mon 08-Aug-11 19:25:02

Wish I could wear leggings with a tunic, but sadly my knees seem to look huge! (They are!!) Black tights with a knee length skirt works for me, and I find slim cut trousers or capris look good with a tunic.

Its not age, its the size and shape of the legs IMHO. Even at 17 and 7 stone, I had hideous knees. Bought some white 'courrege' style boots and looked a sight. Does anyone else remember those 60s white boots?

Oldgreymare Mon 08-Aug-11 19:40:29

Sadly, I look like Max Wall in leggings and Russ Abbot in shorts so both are no go areas. Tend to hide my 'sparrow legs' under trousers or long skirts ( the latter sadly no longer available in M&S....)

Nannyliz Mon 08-Aug-11 22:38:27

Thanks everyone, my legs are OK beneath the knees, so definitely wouldn't wear them with anything shorter than knee length. I'm going to be brave and buy some. I seem to have spent this summer in jeans because it's not been that warm, so leggings and a dress would keep my legs warm and I could wear some of my dresses.

Susiecb I just have to ask, what is a butterball? I have a lovely picture of one of those posh rolls of butter and that really made me smile

The 'courge' style boots MrsJamJam would those be the crnkly plastic ones? I have to say that my legs are pretty good because I am tall, so I can get away with leggins and long well cut tops.

I loved boots in the 60's and I love them now although I never wear them with high heels. Strangely enough it must be in the genes because all of our daughters are obsessed with boots but their's are leather envy. I still wish that jumper hadn't shrunk though, my granddaughters said I looked 'cool' hmm sad
